Cong open to alliance in UP, also focused on rebuilding its base

Hans India18-06-2025

Lucknow: Congress is in the middle of a month-long organisation-building campaign across all 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh (UP) to strengthen its grassroots presence and the party is hopeful of striking a 'respectful and suitable' alliance to take on the BJP in the 2027 assembly polls. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance delivered a strong performance—the Congress winning six of the 17 seats it contested and the SP bagging 37 seats—reducing the BJP's tally from 62 to 33 in UP, the most populous state in the country.
Perhaps that is why Congress general secretary and Uttar Pradesh in-charge Avinash Pande told PTI that while the party is focused on rebuilding its grassroots presence across the state, it would, in all likelihood, look to enter into a 'respectable and suitable alliance' under the INDIA bloc to take on the BJP in the next round of elections.'
For the moment however, Pande said, the party in the middle of 'Sangathan Srijan' (organisation building) campaign across all 75 districts in UP is also gearing up for the panchayat polls, which would be held in 2026, a year ahead of the 2027 polls.
Pande who is on a seven-day tour of the state, meeting district-level leaders and workers to assess progress and energise the cadre said a 100-day programme has been launched to drive the effort, with trained professionals overseeing implementation as the Congress is eyeing the panchayat polls to increase its rural penetration in UP.
In the 2022 state polls, the two parties had contested separately. While SP improved its count from 47 to 111 seats, Congress was reduced to just two. 'Talking about the alliance, the INDIA bloc is very much in existence but as you know, an alliance of the regional parties and us (Congress) as a national party came together to give a strong opposition to the BJP. So, we are strengthening our organisation and because of that we will come together as a strong alliance,' Pande told PTI. 'We are trying to build our party stronger so that in case if we have a respectable and suitable alliance at the time of elections to defeat the BJP, then we should be in a good position to give a befitting result,' he added.
On the rise of regional parties like the SP and BSP and the BJP's current dominance, Pande said, 'I must tell you that regional parties came much, much later than the Congress, which was giving good governance to the people in Uttar Pradesh right from the freedom and after the formation of the state.'
'At present, we are focused on organisation rebuilding of the party in Uttar Pradesh, not just for contesting the elections alone but also doing a lot of other works which are directly related to the cause of the people and the welfare of the state.'
Pande also hit out at the BJP government, accusing it of autocratic functioning and side-lining the democratic role of the opposition.
'One thing that everybody can see is that the government is biased and trying to violate the Constitution by taking autocratic decisions. You can see all the decisions are being taken by suppressing the opposition, which is not being accorded due respect,' he said.
He added, 'Obviously it is the government which is responsible to carry people's liking and welfare. They should take care of people's welfare—whether it is for infrastructure, education, employment or inflation. Congress is performing its responsibility as Opposition with full ability and best intentions.'
On the organisational front, the senior Congress leader said the party's 'Sangathan Srijan' campaign aims to rebuild its structure at five levels—state, district, block, mandal, and booth—following a resolution passed at the AICC plenary session. 'This is being undertaken in a phased manner under the leadership of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee and the guidance of the party's central leadership,' he said.

Patnaik expresses anguish over ‘terrible mess' during Rath Yatra, BJP hits back

'But it's impossible not to voice our deep concern and anguish over how things unfolded during the most sacred event in our state,' he said. In a social media post, the former chief minister said, 'All we can do is pray. May Mahaprabhu Jagannath forgive all those responsible for the terrible mess that has overshadowed this divine festival this year.' He stopped short of directly blaming the administration but said it was impossible not to voice concern over how events unfolded. Bhubaneswar, Jun 28 (PTI) A day after Lord Jagannath's chariot failed to reach its destination on time during the Rath Yatra in Puri, political tempers flared in Odisha on Saturday with BJD chief Naveen Patnaik calling the delay a 'terrible mess', prompting the ruling BJP to accuse the opposition party of engaging in 'vicious politics.' Patnaik, currently recuperating at a Mumbai hospital after surgery, expressed deep anguish over the disruption. 'The Nandighosh chariot stood still at the Singhadwar till 7.45 PM, only to move a few metres before the day ended. This has left lakhs of devotees disillusioned,' Patnaik wrote. In his post, Patnaik recalled that it is hard to forget that last year Lord Balabhadra's idol slipped during the 'Adapa Bije Pahandi' (procession on way to Shree Gundicha temple), a moment that left countless devotees shaken. Responding to Patnaik's remarks, state Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, without naming Patnaik, criticised the BJD for making 'political statements while recovering from jaundice,' implying that they don't understand the will of Lord Jagannath. 'In the past, the BJD government made mistakes and insulted Lord Jagannath. Since 1977, the chariots have always reached the Gundicha Temple on the second day,' he claimed. Harichandan also said this year's Rath Yatra had been 'incident-free' and warned, 'Those doing politics over the Lord's festival will face consequences—if not today, then tomorrow.' At a press conference, BJD vice-president Pratap Jena demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Law Minister Harichandan, holding them morally responsible for the delay and crowd mismanagement. Meanwhile, Congress leader and former minister Prasad Harichandan accused the BJP of sidelining experienced officials and letting party leaders handle the Rath Yatra arrangements. He also raised questions about the alleged influence of industrialist Gautam Adani on the scheduling of the chariot pulling. 'There were reports that Adani was to visit Puri and pull the chariot. Did the government postpone the pulling for his's visit?' he asked. Harichandan further cited a remark made by SJTA Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee, who reportedly said that perhaps 'the Lord chose to stay back as some devotees didn't arrive.' 'Who was that comment directed at? Isn't it a hint toward Adani?' the Congress leader asked. The Congress also demanded a judicial inquiry into the alleged mismanagement, claiming that over 600 devotees were injured or fell ill due to overcrowding. BJP spokesperson Anil Biswal rejected the opposition's claims, calling them baseless and politically motivated. 'The Rath Yatra has been conducted transparently and successfully. Congress's allegations about Adani show their weak mentality,' he said. Biswal also accused the previous BJD government of failing Lord Jagannath during the Nabakalebar festival in 2015. Meanwhile, after being halted on the night of June 27 due to the Taladhwaja chariot of Lord Balabhadra getting stuck while negotiating a turn, the chariots reached their destination, Gundicha Temple, the deities aunt's residence around 1.30 pm. War of words as BJP youth neta held in Odisha over gold theft

Kolkata/West Midnapore: A BJP youth wing neta was arrested near Odisha 's Jaleswar while attempting to flee after stealing about 100 grams of gold from a jewellery shop, triggering a political war of words. According to sources, the arrested Somnath Sahoo is a resident of Midnapore's Habibpur area. The incident took place around 1.30pm on Thursday, when Sahoo stole ornaments from the Jaleswar shop and escaped in his SUV. A dramatic chase ensued as shop staffers and locals pursued Sahoo, ending with the latter's SUV crashing into a divider about 8km from Jaleswar, near Lakshannath Road area. Locals handed Sahoo over to the police. He was arrested on Thursday night. At a press conference in Kolkata on Saturday, Trinamool showed Sahoo's photos with BJP netas and claimed he was BYJM's district secretary. Making an indirect reference to how BJP had attacked TMC in the south Kolkata campus rape case using photos of the primary accused with TMC netas, party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: "BJYM neta Somnath Sahoo... was caught stealing in Odisha and it is all on CCTV. There is a photo of him with Sukanta Majumdar. So, did Sukanta Majumdar send him to carry out the theft? Was there some setting or sharing involved? BJP must clarify this. If these people can show Trinamool photos and make tall claims, why not clarify their own stance after being photographed with a dacoit?" Police of a BJP-governed state arrested Sahoo. Hiraan and Sukanta must answer why they were photographed with him," Ghosh said and added that Sahoo's wife was a BJP candidate in Midnapore municipality elections. Countering Ghosh, Chatterjee said: "The photo was clicked ahead of the 2021 election. I was on the streets campaigning and thousands of people had come to see me, and took photos. It's not possible for me to know whether those taking pictures are thieves or robbers." "The arrest is laudable. BJP is in office in Odisha, but the state's police did not see political colour and I congratulate them for this," he added. BYJM president Indranil Khan, however, said that Sahoo was not an active member. "He didn't even apply for membership during our drive. He might have attended a few programmes and clicked some selfies but the party has no link with him now," said Khan.

‘Utterly insane, destructive': Elon Musk on latest Senate draft bill

Billionaire Elon Musk has criticised the latest version of the tax and spending bill released by the United States senate and said that it will cause 'immense strategic harm' to the US. Musk's renewed criticism comes just weeks after he and the US President Donald Trump exchanged jibes over the former's disapproval of the 'Big, Beautiful Bill' before they made up. Elon Musk's remarks come while the US Senate is getting ready for an important vote on Saturday (local time).(File/AFP) In a post on X, Musk wrote, 'The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country!' 'Utterly insane and destructive. It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future,' he added. Read: Big Beautiful Bill: List of Republicans who will vote against Trump's spending measure Musk's remarks come while the US Senate is getting ready for an important vote on Saturday (local time) as Republicans rush to pass President Donald Trump's bill, which includes tax cuts, spending reductions, and more funding for deportations, before his July 4th deadline. Republicans are putting their majority in the Senate to use to push aside Democratic opposition to the bill. However, not all Republican lawmakers are rallying behind the bill due to its plan to cut funding for Medicaid, food stamps, and other programs. Big, Beautiful Bill up for vote The latest version of the bill, which is 940-pages long, is a collection of tax breaks, cuts in government spending on programs such as Medicaid and more money for Republican priorities such as national defense and deportations. This bill is a key part of Trump's plans for the United States and is up for a vote in the Congress. Trump has asked his party's lawmakers, who hold a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, to get the bill passed by the country's independence day on July 4th Senators are working through the weekend to pass the bill and send it back to the House for final vote, all while Democrats are thoroughly opposing the bill.
