KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Group Holdings Bhd aims to accelerate its investment in training and development for its workforce, with over RM100mil committed for this year to focus on skills in digital technology, artificial intelligence (AI), data and sustainability.
The financial services company said in a statement yesterday that the group continues to uphold its purpose of advancing customers and society by promoting inclusive growth and long-term value creation for its employees.
'Through a range of initiatives, including reskilling and upskilling programmes, CIMB aims to provide a workplace where employees can thrive and grow, reflecting its commitment in building a more inclusive, resilient and empowered workforce,' it said.
CIMB said all its permanent employees in Malaysia are currently earning above the national living wage threshold of RM3,100 per month as outlined in the Employees Provident Fund's Belanjawanku Expenditure Guide.
'This commitment fully supports the Finance Ministry's Government-linked Enterprises Activation and Reform Programme (GEAR-uP) initiative in championing equitable, market-based compensation practices, underscoring CIMB's strong commitment to fair and inclusive compensation practices, ensuring every employee in Malaysia is able to achieve a dignified standard of living,' it said.
CIMB group chief executive officer Novan Amirudin said the company has long committed to fair and market-based compensation practices as part of its total rewards framework for employees.
'We are fully supportive of the GEAR-uP initiative to 'raise the floor' of wages, and are committed to a continuous journey of proactive partnership and engagement with our stakeholders.
'Our approach to compensation goes beyond salaries which includes holistic rewards, equitable remuneration structures and allowances that reflect the contributions and value of our people,' he said.
CIMB said the group is committed to equipping its workforce with the tools and capabilities needed to stay competitive and future-ready.
'Last year, about 2.66 million learning hours had been delivered with a ramp up on digital, data and AI skills in line with CIMB's commitment to strengthen its capabilities in the area,' it added. — Bernama

Shamsul Azri: ECRL project reaches 85pct progress

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) has been instructed to closely monitor the implementation of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, which has now reached 85 per cent completion. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar conveyed this directive during the 32nd MRL Board of Directors meeting, held in conjunction with its retreat in Melaka which began yesterday. He said MRL was also tasked with ensuring that there are no disruptions, such as rail encroachments by irresponsible parties, as such incidents could affect the project's timeline and delay the targeted commencement of operations in early 2027. "I am confident that the ECRL project will become a landmark of national pride and a catalyst for economic revitalisation along its alignment and surrounding areas, directly benefiting the people and the nation. "This is in line with the 'Kesejahteraan' (prosperity) pillar under the Madani principle, which can only be realised through a whole-of-government and whole-of-nation approach, involving synergy between the federal and state governments as well as the private sector," he said in a Facebook post today. In a separate post, Shamsul Azri said the MRL retreat was vital in determining the strategic direction and operational targets of the ECRL service. "Various initiatives are being planned by MRL in collaboration with multiple stakeholders to ensure an efficient rail operating ecosystem, as well as to provide job opportunities for local youths. "In addition, this project will create avenues for business activity, stimulate economic growth, and improve connectivity between the West and East Coasts of Peninsular Malaysia," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) has been instructed to closely monitor the implementation of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, which has now reached 85 per cent progress. This was conveyed by Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN) Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar during the 32nd MRL Board of Directors meeting, held in conjunction with its retreat, which began on Friday (July 5) in Melaka. He said MRL was also tasked with ensuring that no disruptions, such as rail encroachments by irresponsible parties, occur, as these could affect the project's schedule and delay the commencement of operations, which is targeted for early 2027. "I am confident that this ECRL project will become a landmark of national pride and a catalyst for economic revitalisation along its alignment and surrounding areas, directly benefiting the people and the nation. In another post, Shamsul Azri said the MRL retreat was important to focus on the direction and operational targets of the ECRL train journey. "Many things are being planned by the MRL in collaboration with various parties to ensure an efficient rail operating ecosystem, as well as offering job opportunities to local children. Going deep to study scammers using AI deepfake vidoes

PETALING JAYA: With deepfake videos showing supposedly well-known Malaysians promoting fake investments, scammers are increasingly using advanced AI tools to deceive the public and gain their trust. Former Pasir Pinji assemblyman Datuk Chan Kam took a bold step by deliberately engaging with a fake online investment scheme to warn the public about how such scams operate. He said many scammers were now using artificial intelligence (AI) to create highly realistic fake investment videos and advertisements. These are then widely circulated on social media to trick people into handing over their money. Chan, who was accompanied by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong, held a press conference at Wisma MCA on Saturday (July 5). 'In the past two months, I've noticed more of these fake investment ads appearing online. So last month, I decided to click on one of them to see what would happen,' he said. 'After entering my contact details, I received a call from someone speaking Mandarin. The caller told me about an investment opportunity and even helped me set up an account.' Chan said he then transferred RM1,100 to a bank account provided by the scammer and followed the instructions as though he were a genuine investor. 'The scammer contacted me daily, sharing so-called good news about the investment and encouraging me to invest more. 'Fortunately, I knew it was a scam from the beginning, so I didn't proceed further. But the RM1,100 I initially transferred is gone,' he said. He explained that the money had been pooled together by himself, Chong, and several members of the Malaysia-China Friendship and Mutual Assistance Association and the Crime Prevention Foundation. Their aim was to understand how these online scams work. Chan said he used his real name and bank account for the transaction and has kept all relevant evidence. He plans to lodge a police report soon. 'I hope that by sharing my experience, more people will be cautious and avoid falling for these scams on social media,' he added. Meanwhile, Chong said scammers are using AI to produce deep fake videos that appear to show well-known Malaysians endorsing fake investment schemes — raking in billions from unsuspecting victims. He added that the scammers also create deep fake videos of leaders like Anwar, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and other ministers. Some videos even include logos from trusted media outlets like The Star to appear as authentic news reports. Other prominent individuals targeted in these scams include tycoon Tan Sri Robert Kuok, former Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Capital A CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes. 'It's ridiculous – our Prime Minister doesn't even have an Indian accent,' Chong remarked. 'And remember, there's no such thing as easy money. How could paying a small amount give you huge returns? 'With AI now so advanced, people must be extra cautious. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.' He also shared police data showing that in 2024, there were 13,956 scam cases reported, involving total losses of RM2.11bil. He added that 85% of these scams originated from platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram.
