Going deep to study scammers using AI deepfake vidoes
Former Pasir Pinji assemblyman Datuk Chan Kam took a bold step by deliberately engaging with a fake online investment scheme to warn the public about how such scams operate.
He said many scammers were now using artificial intelligence (AI) to create highly realistic fake investment videos and advertisements. These are then widely circulated on social media to trick people into handing over their money.
Chan, who was accompanied by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong, held a press conference at Wisma MCA on Saturday (July 5).
'In the past two months, I've noticed more of these fake investment ads appearing online. So last month, I decided to click on one of them to see what would happen,' he said.
'After entering my contact details, I received a call from someone speaking Mandarin. The caller told me about an investment opportunity and even helped me set up an account.'
Chan said he then transferred RM1,100 to a bank account provided by the scammer and followed the instructions as though he were a genuine investor.
'The scammer contacted me daily, sharing so-called good news about the investment and encouraging me to invest more.
'Fortunately, I knew it was a scam from the beginning, so I didn't proceed further. But the RM1,100 I initially transferred is gone,' he said.
He explained that the money had been pooled together by himself, Chong, and several members of the Malaysia-China Friendship and Mutual Assistance Association and the Crime Prevention Foundation. Their aim was to understand how these online scams work.
Chan said he used his real name and bank account for the transaction and has kept all relevant evidence. He plans to lodge a police report soon.
'I hope that by sharing my experience, more people will be cautious and avoid falling for these scams on social media,' he added.
Meanwhile, Chong said scammers are using AI to produce deep fake videos that appear to show well-known Malaysians endorsing fake investment schemes — raking in billions from unsuspecting victims.
He added that the scammers also create deep fake videos of leaders like Anwar, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and other ministers. Some videos even include logos from trusted media outlets like The Star to appear as authentic news reports.
Other prominent individuals targeted in these scams include tycoon Tan Sri Robert Kuok, former Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Capital A CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
'It's ridiculous – our Prime Minister doesn't even have an Indian accent,' Chong remarked. 'And remember, there's no such thing as easy money. How could paying a small amount give you huge returns?
'With AI now so advanced, people must be extra cautious. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.'
He also shared police data showing that in 2024, there were 13,956 scam cases reported, involving total losses of RM2.11bil. He added that 85% of these scams originated from platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram.

FSI: Compounded tax and regulatory burdens impacting Sabah industries
Frederick Chua KOTA KINABALU (July 6): The Federation of Sabah Industries (FSI), as the principal body representing the interests of Sabah's industrial and manufacturing sector, on Sunday voiced serious concerns over the compounded operational and financial challenges faced by industries following the implementation of several significant regulatory changes in 2025. FSI treasurer Sylvester Chua stated that the recent expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) scope effective 1 July 2025, combined with the increase in minimum wage to RM1,700, the mandatory e-invoicing rollout for companies with turnover between RM5 million and RM50 million, and the impending 2% EPF contribution for foreign workers starting October 2025, have collectively imposed a heavy administrative and financial burden on businesses in Sabah. 'Industries are struggling to manage overlapping compliance demands within a compressed implementation timeline,' said Chua. 'The absence of clear, transitional guidelines particularly concerning business-to-business (B2B) exemptions and the application procedures for raw materials and intermediate goods exemptions has led to confusion, operational disruption, and rising compliance costs,' he said. He further noted that in the Sabah context, most raw materials are acquired for the manufacturing of end products. Therefore, full exemptions for raw materials, components, intermediate goods, and manufacturing equipment from Sales Tax regardless of the tax status of the finished product are critical. Not only would this relieve manufacturers of unnecessary tax-on-tax burdens, but it would also reduce compliance documentation and audit preparation costs, which have now become an added strain on industries already facing higher logistics and infrastructure costs. The combined financial impact of wage increases, SST compliance costs, e-invoicing obligations, and the soon-to-be implemented EPF contribution for foreign workers is severely pressuring the viability of manufacturers and SMEs in Sabah, Chua warned. Without immediate policy intervention, this will inevitably result in higher operational costs, supply chain disruptions, and increased prices for consumers. In light of these issues, FSI is committed to raising these concerns directly with the Federal Government on behalf of Sabah's business community. The federation urgently appeals to the Prime Minister and the Federal Government to introduce a comprehensive and industry-friendly B2B exemption framework, alongside clear, practical implementation guidelines to support businesses through this challenging period. FSI also wishes to commend the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Sabah for its proactive engagement and support during the early stages of implementation. However, as Chua pointed out, key areas such as B2B exemptions, raw material and products classifications, and exemption application procedures still require urgent clarification and improved administrative processes to avoid further uncertainty and disruptions. The FSI reaffirms its commitment to working closely with authorities and stakeholders to ensure that industrial policies and taxation frameworks are equitable, practical, and responsive to the unique economic conditions and operational realities faced by industries in Sabah.

Singaporean drivers hit with RM57,000 in fines since July 1 as Johor JPJ cracks down on VEP dodgers
JOHOR BARU, July 6 — The Johor Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued 190 summonses amounting to RM57,000 during the first five days of full enforcement of the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) at the Malaysia–Singapore land border, which began on July 1. State JPJ director Azmil Zainal Adnan said 1,767 vehicles were inspected, with 94 vehicles issued warning notices. 'So far, VEP enforcement at the land checkpoints has proceeded smoothly,' he told Bernama today. Under the enforcement, drivers of Singapore-registered vehicles entering Malaysia without a valid VEP may be fined RM300. The enforcement is in line with Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which makes it an offence to drive a foreign-registered motor vehicle into or within Malaysia without a valid permit. The VEP system aims not only to manage cross-border traffic flow but also to enhance the enforcement of road transport laws involving foreign vehicles. — Bernama
