Putin warns no Russia recession ‘under any circumstances'
ST PETERSBURG : President Vladimir Putin on Friday urged officials not to let Russia fall into recession 'under any circumstances', as some in his own government warned of a hit to economic growth.
Economists have warned for months of a slowdown in the Russian economy, with the country posting its slowest quarterly expansion in two years in the first quarter of 2025.
The Kremlin has said this is to be expected after two years of rapid expansion as it ramped up military expenditure to fund the Ukraine campaign, but officials including the country's economy minister have warned of pain ahead.
'Some specialists and experts are pointing to the risks of stagnation and even a recession,' Putin told attendees in an address at Russia's flagship economic forum in Saint Petersburg.
'This must not be allowed to happen under any circumstances.'
'We need to pursue a competent, well-thought-out budgetary, tax and monetary policy,' he added.
Moscow's economy grew in 2023 and 2024, despite the West's sweeping sanctions, with massive state spending on the military powering a robust expansion.
But economists have long warned that heavy public investment in the defence industry is no longer enough to keep Russia's economy growing and does not reflect a real increase in productivity.

The Russian Defence Ministry said air defence units downed a total of 291 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones on Sunday, below a record 524 drones downed in attacks on May 7, ahead of Russia's Victory Day parade on May 9. Alexander Drozdenko, governor of the Leningrad region surrounding St. Petersburg, said that over ten drones were downed over the area, and falling debris injured a woman. At 0840 GMT on Sunday Drozdenko said that the attack was repelled. St. Petersburg's Pulkovo airport was closed during the attack, with 57 flights delayed and 22 diverted to other airports, according to a statement. Pulkovo resumed operations later on Sunday. Russian blogger Alexander Yunashev, part of an official group of reporters travelling with Peskov, said Peskov had told him their flight from Moscow to St. Petersburg had been delayed by the drone attack for 2 hours on Sunday. MUAR, July 27 — The close cooperation between the federal and state governments in driving the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) has positioned the initiative as one of the main pillars of Johor's economic success, said Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. He said the state is on a very positive trajectory, with tangible achievements reflecting the effectiveness of development efforts underway. As an example, he said, Johor recorded RM30.1 billion in approved investments for the first quarter of this year, alongside a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 6.4 per cent, which exceeded the national average last year. Gobind: Generative AI could unlock RM479b for Malaysia's economy, but must be a ‘force for good'
KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — Widespread adoption of AI by businesses and workers in Malaysia is set to accelerate the nation's economic growth across various sectors, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. In a statement today, Gobind said that Generative AI alone is projected to unlock up to USD113.4 billion in productive capacity for the country. Speaking at the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2025 in Shanghai, China, yesterday, he underscored the shared responsibility of countries worldwide to ensure that AI continues to be a force for good. 'In this artificial intelligence (AI)-shaped era, collaboration is essential. Only through shared commitment, innovation and vigilance can we ensure that the digital world remains a force for good. 'The overarching goal is to bridge the digital divide among nations and enhance digital collaboration to ensure the development and governance of emerging technologies benefit humanity,' he said. Gobind said Malaysia welcomes the outcome document of the Global AI Governance Action Plan, and highlighted domestic efforts, including the establishment of the National AI Office (NAIO) last December to coordinate and drive the country's AI agenda. As the 2025 ASEAN Chair, Gobind said that the country is spearheading the ASEAN AI Safety Network and leading the conversation on AI safety. The Network, according to Gobind, will act as ASEAN's regional platform for AI safety, facilitating best practice exchanges, research collaboration, standards development and responsible AI adoption.
