ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Duhok SC won the Iraq Cup on Friday, beating out another Kurdish team, Zakho SC. This is the first time a Kurdish club has won the title since the cup's establishment in 1948.
The historic achievement will allow Duhok SC to play in AFC Champions League Two. Both teams are also now eligible for the Iraq Super League.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani congratulated both clubs for their achievements, adding that the Kurdistan Region is proud of them.
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also congratulated the teams.
The match was goalless, leading to a penalty shootout that ended 5-3.
Erbil Sports Club was the first Kurdish club to make it to the final of the Iraq Cup in 2023 but failed to win the title following a dramatic defeat by al-Quwa al-Jawiya, one of Iraq's oldest football teams.

Baghdad ( – The draw for the semi-finals of the 2024-2025 Iraq Cup has been set, pitting four of the country's top clubs against each other for a place in the final. The Iraqi Football Association's Competitions Committee announced on Wednesday (July 9, 2025) that both matches will be played this Saturday, July 12th. In the first semi-final, Zakho SC will host recently-crowned league champions Al-Shorta SC at Zakho International Stadium. The second match will see Duhok SC play at home against Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya at Duhok Stadium. The four teams secured their semi-final berths after winning their quarter-final ties on Tuesday. Al-Shorta defeated Al-Talaba in a dramatic penalty shootout, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya beat Al-Najaf 3-1, Zakho overcame Newroz 1-0, and Duhok knocked out Al-Mina'a 3-1. The winners of Saturday's two enticing semi-final clashes will advance to the Iraq Cup final.
