Intriguing feature shows Google's serious about security in Android 16
The Intrusion Detection System's name gives much of its functionality away. It collects data on specific network and device activity, and stores it in a secure, encrypted log, ready for you to examine should you suspect your device or Google account has been hacked or accessed without your approval. It's not clear if the feature will directly alert you to suspicious activity though.

Data collected will include information on lock screen activity, web browsing history, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection information, app installations, and activity through the USB port. While the average phone user probably won't need to worry much about hackers exploiting their phones using these methods, anyone who uses their phone for business, or for businesses deploying multiple Android phones to employees, may find it invaluable.
Information collected by the Intrusion Detection System will be stored in an encrypted Google Drive folder, according to the Google Play Services code, and requires both the device's lock screen security and your Google account password to be entered before gaining access to the decrypted log.
If the Intrusion Detection System does become a final feature in Android 16, it may be part of Google's Advanced Protection Program. Introduced several years ago, the Advanced Protection System is expected to gain various new features in Android 16, including the ability to prevent 2G network access, and more robust methods to prevent the installation of unknown apps, which again may better protect phones used for business.
It's not certain the Intrusion Detection System will make it into Android 16, as Google may only be testing the feature for now, but it does fit in with Android 16's enhanced security features we already know about. Google will reveal more about Android 16 on May 13 during a dedicated Android event, ahead of its annual developer conference, Google I/O on May 20.

It's also got Chromecast built-in so you can cast to it from an Android phone (I was able to cast the Spectrum TV app to it from my iPhone 16 Pro but had to fiddle around with the settings in my Google Home app to get it to work). And finally, it has an integrated battery that delivers up to 3 hours of battery life in energy-saving mode (the battery life seemed closer to 2 hours in my tests). However, when you start streaming, the picture does appear to be 1080p. You just aren't going to get inky blacks. But it is a matte screen that cuts down on the glare and has a relatively wide viewing angle. The TV is designed to be taken outdoors, though it has no water resistance rating, so you wouldn't want to leave it out in the rain. (Sylvox makes a 15.6-inch portable TV that's apparently waterproof, but it's considerably smaller than this TV). There's a mini soundbar in the base -- Skyworth says the TV is equipped with Dolby Audio -- that can play pretty loud, but the dynamic range is a little narrow. That's a polite way of saying there isn't a whole lot of bass. But again, for casual viewing, it does the job and you could connect a better speaker to it if you wanted to you. You could also connect a streaming device like a Roku 4K Streaming Stick to it. David Carnoy/CNET Screwed into the back of TV is a handle made out of faux leather for carrying the TV, which is fairly lightweight at 11 pounds. Skyworth also sells a carrying case for it, which is also currently on sale for $50. Is this a better option than a portable monitor? In some ways, yes. First off, this is bigger than most portable monitors, and to reiterate, the key feature here is the integrated battery (alas, it doesn't appear to be replaceable), so you can view the TV wherever you want (for 2 to 3 hours anyway). I used it on my home Wi-Fi but also connected the TV to my phone's hot spot when I was outside, and it worked fine streaming content. True, it's significantly more expensive than many portable monitors, but the use case for a portable monitor tends to be different. The Pixel 9 Pro Is the Easiest Android Phone I've Ever Used and It's 25% Off During Prime Day

I like its solid overall performance and quirky new AI skills. The element that stands out most is how easy it is to use. Android phones often get a bad rap for being overly convoluted. And to be fair, that's often well justified. Samsung's Galaxy S25 range, for example, has deep menu systems for messing about with nearly every aspect of the phone, along with features like the Edge Panel sidebar and a variety of Samsung's own AI tools. You even get Samsung's version of some apps, so you end up with two apps for photos, two apps for web browsing and so on. For many Android users, the deep customizability of the OS has always been a selling point over the more simplistic iOS found on Apple's iPhones. But just because you want an Android phone, doesn't necessarily mean you're a fanatical tech nerd who wants to tinker with menus all day. The Pixel 9 Pro is the easiest Android phone I've ever used, and there's a number of key reasons why. My experience with the Pixel 9 Pro First, it's Google's own phone, meaning there's no secondary manufacturer software skin over the top of the operating system. It's pure, uncut Android. Google's interface is clean, easy to read and uncluttered. Naturally, it uses Google's own apps by default. Samsung, meanwhile, loads its phones up with its own browser, email client and photo gallery, all of which sit beside Google's Chrome, Gmail and Photos apps, meaning you already have duplicates of each tool. Samsung is not the only phone-maker to do this. Almost all Android phone companies load their phones up with at least their own browser and gallery app, while some companies, like Samsung and Honor, go as far as making their own email clients and calendars. With its pure Android software, the Pixel 9 Pro offers a super-clean and easy-to-use experience. Andrew Lanxon/CNET I recently reviewed the Honor 400 Pro, and one of the big issues I found with that phone was how much unsolicited stuff comes pre-loaded as standard. Third-party apps from TikTok, LinkedIn, WPS office, Temu and a variety of others are all right there as soon as you turn it on for the first time, making the phone feel cluttered, bloated and complicated before you've even had a chance to install one app of your own. The Pixel has none of this. It's the same with AI tools. Samsung has its Bixby assistant, plus a huge variety of its own AI functions. The Honor 400 Pro packs a bunch of AI features for real-time translation and transcription, as do the OnePlus 13 and various other recent Android phones. But they all come with Google's Gemini Advanced, too, along with Circle to Search. The Pixel doesn't need to pointlessly double up. If you want to use AI with your phone, its tools are baked into the heart of the phone experience without you needing to also activate and sign into a third-party service. This simple approach extends to the camera, too. Open the default camera app and you're met with a neat interface, comprised mostly of the shutter button and zoom levels, with other shooting modes found alongside. It doesn't try to overcomplicate things here, instead letting you quickly shoot images without messing about with settings. It's an approach that works here, and as a result, the Pixel 9 Pro takes some of my favorite automatic images from a phone camera, doing a great job of balancing exposure and colors. I love the Xiaomi 15 Ultra's camera, but to get the best from it, you need to shoot in Pro mode, taking manual control of the settings, which makes it more suited to advanced photographers who want to fine-tune their images. The camera's simple software makes it easy to take photos with little effort on your part. Andrew Lanxon/CNET The Pixel does offer deeper control if you want it, conveniently hidden behind a small settings icon, rather than requiring you to switch completely into a "Pro" mode.
