Recognising selfless service, SVIMS celebrates World Blood Donor Day
The event, held on Saturday and organised by the Department of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine (Blood Centre), acknowledged the crucial impact of regular blood donors in sustaining emergency and advanced medical care.
Speaking on the occasion, SVIMS Director-cum-Vice-Chancellor Dr R V Kumar underlined the need to make blood donation a part of everyday life. 'Blood is not only essential in emergencies and trauma care, but is also crucial across all super-specialty departments,' he noted.
Reflecting on his own experiences, he shared that he had donated blood countless times. 'On one occasion, I even had the opportunity to donate blood just before performing open-heart surgery,' he recalled.
He also highlighted the exceptional performance of the SVIMS Blood Centre, which has now been designated as a training hub for organisations conducting voluntary blood donation camps.
SVIMS Dean Dr Alladi Mohan pointed out the stark gap in demand and supply of blood units in India.
'While the country needs four crore units of blood annually, only 40 lakh units are available. Although 50 per cent of the population is eligible to donate, only four out of every 1,000 people actually donate,' he said, attributing the shortfall to lack of awareness.
He stressed that men can donate every three months and women every six months without health risks.
Medical Superintendent Dr Ram highlighted the introduction of the National Health Mission's 'e-Rakt Kosh' app, which facilitates easier access to blood donation services. He encouraged young people to actively participate in blood donation drives.
Head of the Blood Centre Dr Sridhar Babu shared that this year's World Blood Donor Day is being celebrated with the theme 'Give blood. Give hope – Together we save lives'. All attendees took a pledge to donate blood whenever someone is in need.
SVIMS Registrar Dr Aparna R Bitla, in-charge Principal of Sri Padmavathi Women's Medical College Dr Mukteshwarayya, RMO Dr Kotireddy, Senior Professor of Cardiology Dr Vanajakshamma, and several others participated.

IOCL donates medical equipment worth Rs 22 cr to SVIMS
Tirupati: TTD Chairman BR Naidu said that Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) in Tirupati is fast emerging as the best super specialty hospital in the country. Speaking after inaugurating advanced medical equipment at SVIMS on Thursday, he said that the TTD was committed to providing the best healthcare services to the poor, and to strengthen the hospital further, the TTD was allocating Rs 140 crore annually for its development and expansion. On the occasion, the Chairman inaugurated state-of-the-art MRI and CT scan equipment, which were provided with the support of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. IOCL donated medical equipment worth Rs 22.01 crore to SVIMS, a significant contribution towards enhancing the diagnostic and treatment facilities at the hospital. Among the donated equipment is a 3 Tesla MRI scanner, MAGNETOM Vida, costing Rs 14 crore, and a 4D CT Simulator System, SOMATOM used for radiotherapy planning, valued at Rs 8 crore. Speaking to the media, Naidu said that these latest technologies were being installed only in SVIMS, which is the largest super specialty hospital in the Rayalaseema region. The new machines are particularly beneficial for cancer patients, as they help detect tumours with precision and without side effects. The equipment aids in identifying brain disorders and locating cancer growths, while also determining the dosage required for various organs during cancer treatment. Naidu mentioned that these facilities will help provide better treatment to over 2.5 lakh poor patients every year at a minimal cost. IOCL Marketing Director Satish Kumar, who was present at the event, said that their organisation was proud to support SVIMS as part of their social service programmes. He assured that IOCL would continue to participate in such service-oriented initiatives in the future. SVIMS Director Dr RV Kumar stated that under TTD's management, the hospital was offering top-class healthcare free of cost to the poor, while also providing high-quality medical education to students at Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the UPSC Combined Medical Services (CMS) Admit Card 2025. Those who have applied for the exam successfully can download the admit card by visiting the official websites, or by entering the required login credentials. The exam is set to be conducted on July 20. The UPSC notice advises applicants to verify their e-Admit Card and report any discrepancies to the Commission. Entry to the testing location will be denied if candidates fail to present their e-Admit Cards at check-in. The notification also states that candidates will be barred from entering the examination venue 30 minutes before each session starts, which is 9 AM for the morning session and 1:30 PM for the afternoon session. No candidate will be allowed entry after this window closes. Step 1: Visit the Union Public Service Commission's (UPSC) official webpage. Step 6: Take a printout of the UPSC CMS admit card 2025 and present the same at the examination hall. Applicants must bring this printed e-Admit Card and the original Photo Identity Card, as listed on the e-Admit Card, to each exam session.
