5,000 personnel, drones: Delhi Police beefs up security for Kanwar Yatra
According to the police, traffic diversions have been put in place and additional checking has been initiated on major routes from where kanwariyas are expected to pass.
"The pilgrimage will continue till July 22 and culminate on Shivratri. We are in coordination with paramilitary forces and home guards who will be monitoring sensitive areas through CCTV surveillance and drone patrolling," said the police officer.
Special security measures have also been planned for temple areas and designated kanwar camps where pilgrims will rest and perform rituals, he added.
According to the officer, 774 locations have been identified across the city for setting up camps, and 374 kanwar camps have already been permitted. Sources in the police said that more than 150 additional camps are awaiting final approval.
"The primary focus will remain on maintaining law and order, facilitating smooth traffic movement and providing immediate assistance to the pilgrims. PCR vans, quick reaction teams (QRT) and ambulances have been strategically stationed," another police officer said.
Key routes such as NH-1, NH-9, and major arterial roads passing through outer, northeast, east and Shahdara districts are being closely monitored. Pilgrims carrying kanwar (decorated pots of Ganga water) on foot and in vehicles will be allowed entry via designated points.
"To manage the influx, Delhi Police has released a list of entry routes for kanwariyas which includes Ghazipur border, Anand Vihar, Bhopura, Apsara, Maharajpur, Loni border and ISBT Kashmere Gate. Specific roads like Wazirabad to Bhopura, GT Road and Loni Road will also serve as major kanwar routes," the officer added.
Authorities have also appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel through the routes notified for kanwariya movement. Emergency services and essential vehicles will be facilitated and special helplines have been activated.
The officer said that senior officers of Delhi Police have directed DCPs of all 15 districts to remain present on the ground and ensure coordination with civil administration, especially for handling emergencies and regulating crowd movement.
Separate teams have been tasked to address any threat perception and maintain vigil against suspicious activities during the week-long religious gathering. All SHOs have been asked to stay in touch with local camp organisers to ensure that safety norms and guidelines are being followed.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government's Disaster Management Authority has kept response teams ready with water tankers, fire services, medical aid and disaster response equipment.
The Kanwar Yatra witnesses lakhs of devotees every year, who travel mostly on foot from Haridwar to their local Shiva temples, carrying holy water from the Ganga to offer on Shivlingas.
With rains already lashing parts of Delhi and NCR, officials said extra caution is being maintained to prevent accidents and ensure smooth passage for the pilgrims.

ibis Styles enters destination wedding segment in India with Vagator property in Goa
In India, top luxury hotels by and large have been catering to destination weddings where the average spend could range anything between Rs 40 lakh and Rs 5 crore with the number of guests ranging from 100 to 200. In value terms, 70 to 75 per cent of the destination wedding have been catered by luxury and upscale hotels, he said. The 'ibis Styles Vagator' property in Goa will be the first to offer full-fledged destination wedding services from the upcoming season and will consider extending it to other properties after learning from the initial experience, ibis & ibis Styles India Head of Commercials, Animesh Kumar told PTI. 'There is that mid-scale segment and there is a demand in that segment. Not everyone has the ability to spend a few crores of rupees… based on our assessment, I think there is opportunity to cater to this demand,' Kumar said on the idea behind ibis Styles looking at the destination wedding segment. There are young, modern, smart, fun millennials who want a special, but smaller setup and they are more value driven, he said, adding, 'that is the segment which is underserved, right now'. Within the ibis network, while 'ibis' is well positioned primarily for business travel, 'ibis Styles' has more of design element and is more leisurely and it fits well for destination weddings, he noted. The 142-room 'ibis Styles Vagator' property is very close to the beach and has all the facilities such as a poolside, banquet hall, and an amphitheatre that can meet the requirements of a modern wedding, Kumar said. Following an assessment and study with the company's partners, he said based on the data there is enough demand and a need which is not being catered to. 'Hence we decided to get into it (destination wedding) full fledged,' Kumar noted. Asked if the destination wedding service will be extended to other properties, he said, 'We are launching it at ibis Styles Vagator… like any new product launch we will have to go through some learning curve… We are ready to collect the lead for November or December (dates). We want to take the learnings from here. We want to get the things right, and then extend it from here to other properties based on the command evaluation.' On the ticket size, Kumar said, 'We are looking at, ideally, a buyout (all the rooms booked)… we are about 142-odd rooms. We could be catering to about 200 odd people… we are looking at a buyout which could be Rs 30-40 lakh, depending on the value and the position.' The company has been working for the last four five months to prepare to launch the destination wedding product and finalise the service, marketing strategy and prepare channel network and is now ready to roll out from the upcoming wedding season, he noted. From tea stall to Mt Everest: Meghalaya's Rifiness Warjri aims for seven summits
From serving tea and noodles at a roadside stall to dreaming of summiting the highest peaks across all seven continents, Meghalaya's Rifiness Warjri is charting a path of grit and grace. The 20-year-old mountaineer recently etched her name in history as the youngest person from the state to conquer Mount Everest. But even with this extraordinary feat, Rifiness remains deeply rooted in her humble beginnings. In an interview with PTI, Rifiness stood proud, yet grounded, as she shared her dreams of scaling the tallest mountains on every continent. Her journey has captured the hearts of many — not just for her physical endurance and mental strength but also for the humility and warmth she continues to carry. Eyeing the prestigious seven summits challenge, Rifiness hopes her path will inspire countless other women from struggling working-class families in small towns and marginalised communities to chase big dreams. Born in Nongthymmai but now residing in the Laitkor area of the East Khasi Hills district on the outskirts of Shillong, Rifiness comes from a modest, hard-working family. Her mother runs a small roadside tea stall while her father sells chicken to support the family. Despite the national and international recognition she now receives, Rifiness is still often seen helping out at the family stall, wiping tables, serving tea, and chatting with customers, just as she always did. 'It's my home. My roots keep me grounded… the mountains teach us humility. When I stood atop Everest, I realised how small and insignificant we are. That was one lesson I brought back and I am sharing with everyone,' she said. Despite being a man of few words, her father Shlurbor Kharmyndai could not hide his pride. 'It's a proud moment for us. I wish that she secures a government job as soon as possible so that she can support the family as well, but I also do not want her to stop dreaming. She is free to fly big,' he said. Her elder sister, Noury, who co-manages the family tea stall, also spoke with emotion. 'God has been kind to our family,' she said, smiling as she handed a cup of tea to a customer. Also read: Hyderabad's Vishwanath Karthikey Padakanti, the Youngest Indian to complete 7 Summits challenge 'Seeing my sister reach the top of the world is like a dream come true. She worked so hard and deserves all this love and respect,' she added. The Warjri family maintains a strong and loving bond. After the day's work, they gather at home to share simple meals and talk about their day. Their evenings are often filled with laughter and music, with Rifiness and her sister strumming their ukuleles, singing soft melodies that echo through their home. Rifiness' journey to Everest was anything but easy. Meghalaya, though rich in natural beauty, lacks mountaineering infrastructure and organised support for adventure sports. Sponsorship and funding are limited, especially for athletes, and mountaineering is not a popular sport in the state. But with unshakeable determination, intense training, and the emotional strength drawn from her family, Rifiness overcame every obstacle placed in her path. 'I want to show young people, especially girls, that we can dream big and make it happen — even if we start small,' she said. For children from disadvantaged families, she gave a message: 'Your background should never limit your ambition. Believe in yourself and keep going.' Her climb has earned her recognition from across the nation. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma felicitated her with cash rewards and acknowledged the significance of her journey for the state's youth. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called her a shining example of India's resilient young generation. The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) also honoured her after she symbolically handed over a piece of rock she carried back from Everest, connecting her triumph with the land and people she represents. Beyond the symbolic moments and celebratory ceremonies, Rifiness's aspirations are only just beginning. She dreams of continuing her mountaineering journey, aiming to conquer the seven summits, climbing the highest peaks on every continent, including Denali in North America, Kilimanjaro in Africa, and Vinson Massif in Antarctica. Each climb will come with its own set of challenges, but Rifiness is no stranger to hardships. 'I hope someday I will summit all these peaks, but right now I want to complete my BSc, which was stalled due to the training and travelling last year,' she added.
