Troubled Wales rugby team names Steve Tandy new coach
The appointment was announced on Monday, with the Wales-born Tandy having just completed a southern hemisphere tour with Scotland as part of its coaching staff. He'll start on Sept. 1.
Tandy is the full-time replacement for Warren Gatland, who left his second spell as Wales coach midway through the Six Nations in February. Gatland's departure came during a national-record 18-test losing run by Wales, the worst ever streak by a top-tier rugby nation. That losing run came to an end this month with a win in Japan.
Last weekend, the British and Irish Lions — touring Down Under — played a test against one of the southern hemisphere giants Australia, New Zealand and South Africa without a Welshman in the squad for the first time since 1896.
Tandy has coached Welsh team Ospreys for six years and at Australian Super Rugby team NSW Waratahs.
Abi Tierney, chief executive of the Welsh Rugby Union, believes Tandy can bring the good times back to a once-proud rugby nation.
'This is a keystone appointment for us and an integral part of our five-year strategy as we look to achieve sustainable success for our senior men's side,' Tierney said.
'Steve fits the bill in terms of the affinity he will be able to create with a young group of players with huge potential, but also the galvanizing effect we know he can have on the whole rugby ecosystem as a proud Welshman.'

Ayub was voted player of the match for his half-century and bowling return of 2-20. Some lofty tail-end hitting from Jason Holder, who struck four sixes in his unbeaten, 12-ball 30, and Shamar Joseph, who hit 21 from 12, helped West Indies to 164-7 and made the final margin more respectable. That lopsided contest ended any chance of the West Indies starting the series against Pakistan on a better footing after comprehensive test and T20 series losses to Australia. NEW YORK (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays All-Star first baseman Jonathan Aranda will miss time with a left wrist injury after he collided with New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton while reaching for an errant throw Thursday. After his team's 7-4 loss in a game interrupted by rain, Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said preliminary X-rays were inconclusive and Aranda will undergo further testing on Friday before the Rays host the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mikal Bridges agrees to $150 million extension with Knicks, AP source says
NEW YORK (AP) — Mikal Bridges agreed to a four-year, $150 million extension with the New York Knicks on Thursday, a person with knowledge of the details said. The person confirmed the deal to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced. It was first reported by ESPN. The Knicks gave up five first-round picks to acquire Bridges last June and he rewarded them by taking less than he could have earned to lock in to a future with former Villanova teammates Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. Bridges could have earned $156 million in this extension, or even more by waiting until his contract expired next summer.
