Panthers training camp preview: How many roster spots will be available at WR?
Which players are sure to make it through the summer and onto the team's initial 53-man roster? Are there any wild-card candidates who can leave a lasting impression in the coming weeks? And which battles are worth keeping an eye on?
Here is our training camp preview for the Panthers' wide receiver position:
Roster locks
The Panthers, for the first time in franchise history, have now spent back-to-back first-round picks on wideouts. McMillan could be the true No. 1 target for quarterback Bryce Young while Legette will try to find his way after an underwhelming rookie campaign.
Thielen, who turns 35 years old in late August, is back for the third and final season of his contract. He led Carolina in receiving over the first two, with 1,014 yards in 2023 and 615 yards in 2024.
Coker may very well be Thielen's successor at the slot position. Like the savvy veteran, the 23-year-old youngster is a sound route technician with sure hands.
Likely to make it
Moore's connection with head coach Dave Canales, whom he also played under in Seattle and Tampa Bay, is strong. He proved to be a useful weapon for Young towards the end of 2024 as well, recording 35 targets over the team's final seven outings.
Horn seems to have a high-profile connection too, but with president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan. Plus, there may not be another receiver on this roster who has the speed that Horn does—as evidenced by his eye-opening display in the spring.
On the bubble
Renfrow missed the entire 2024 season due to a rough bout with ulcerative colitis. The Myrtle Beach, S.C. native, University of Clemson product and former Pro Bowler has an outside chance to complete a feel-good NFL comeback.
Battle to watch
If Renfrow does finish his story, he might have to do so at the expense of Moore. But Moore's past with Canales and his experience on special teams will give him the upper hand.
Potential sleeper
Speaking of Canales and special teams, the second-year play-caller certainly values the ability to play in the third phase of the game. And that will benefit Chisena—who could step up as a leader for the unit following the offseason departures of safety Sam Franklin Jr. and tight end Feleipe Franks.

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore calls Ohio State player best in the country
It's hard for anyone from Michigan to compliment anything about Ohio State, but sometimes you have no choice because of the obvious. That's exactly what happened at Big Ten football media days this past week with Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore. You can't talk about the Wolverines without also discussing Ohio State, and so it was when Moore was asked about the Buckeyes and the success last year in The Game. The topic of OSU wide receiver Jeremiah Smith came up, and Moore had to relent that he was a pretty special player. "He's probably the best college football player that's out there," Moore told reporters. "He's elite." It's hard to argue with. Not only does Smith pass the eyeball test, the stats also say that he can be a handful. As a freshman, Smith put together arguably the best season by a freshman wide receiver ever, hauling in 76 catches for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns. Despite that, Michigan did contain Smith to a degree. He did catch the only touchdown by Ohio State in The Game last year, but finished with just five catches for 35 yards. Smith has already guaranteed the Buckeyes will have a different outcome the next two years, and he'll get a chance to make good on that on November 29 in Ann Arbor. We'll see if Michigan can limit the effectiveness of Smith again this year, or if the star receiver can exact a little revenge in the Big House. 'Farcical': NRL fans make same complaint about referees as Panthers roll Tigers
Angry NRL fans have slammed the inconsistency of referees after a seventh-straight win for Penrith that keeps their incredible top-four charge alive. The Panthers thumped the Tigers 36-2 on Saturday evening to surge into fifth spot on the table, but it came after viewers all made similar complaints about the unpopular move from officials to penalise teams for incorrect play-the-balls. The Tigers started the match brightly and led 2-0 after an early penalty goal from right in front. But things soon unravelled for Benji Marshall's side, who were guilty of gifting the four-time defending premiers field position with a series of six-again restarts. Referee Peter Gough also pinged the Tigers for a 'roll-ball' after they failed to play the ball correctly and it helped give the Panthers the impetus as they scored three quick tries to establish a 16-point lead by halftime. The officials have made it clear that they will penalise players for not making a genuine attempt to rake the ball back with their foot in play-the-balls. But as many viewers pointed out, several Panthers players appeared to do the same thing as the Tigers, without being penalised for it. Tries for Lindsay Smith, Casey McLean and Dylan Edwards set up Penrith's big lead at the break but there was a widespread belief from viewers across social media that the lead-up to many of the Panthers' tries included numerous 'roll-balls' that went unpunished from the officials. Quick play-the-balls have become a much bigger factor in the NRL since the introduction of six-again restarts and Penrith are one of the best teams in the comp in that regard. But the reality is that players from every side seem to be getting away with incorrect play-the-balls and the decision-making process from referees around which ones to penalise has been labelled 'farcical' by many fans. These roll ball calls are a farce! #nrlpantherstigers — SupercoachKing (@supercoachking) July 26, 2025 Taking 4 months off the stupid roll ball penalties and bringing them back in round 21 is farcical #NRLPanthersTigers — Anthony (@roosterman1997) July 26, 2025 Tigers get penalised for not playing the ball with their ENTIRE next set of 6 from the Panthers, not one foot touched a played ball. All rolled. This is the bullshit that the fans hate. The gross inconsistencies & subjective rules. @NRL#NRLPanthersTigers — Matt (@MC_Hammer75) July 26, 2025 Panthers just scored their second try from a straight up roll ball… the inconsistency is a joke #nrlpantherstigers — ShireTiger (@ShireTiger) July 26, 2025 Just watched the Tigers get pinged for a roll ball, 25m from their own line. Foot made the movement, missed it by an inch. I figured I'd watch the Panthers next set… they had two, a late six again… and not a single foot touched a ball. Not one. Then they scored. — Sean Doherty (@seano888) July 26, 2025 Panthers close in on top-four with seventh-straight win Despite the backlash against the officials, the Tigers were ultimately outclassed by Ivan Cleary's Panthers, who took another giant step towards finishing the season in the top four. The fourth-placed Warriors' slip-up against the lowly Titans has given Penrith fresh hope and Brisbane's loss against the Eels allowed the defending champs to leapfrog the Broncos into fifth. Penrith will need the Warriors to lose at least twice on the run home to snatch fourth spot but Penrith's red-hot form and return to their premiership-winning defence gives them a massive chance. The situation is a far cry from a 1-5 start to the season from Penrith, who sat dead-last just two months ago, before their stunning winning streak started. "I'll be happy to make the top eight, really," Penrith coach Cleary said after the Tigers game. "I'm very proud of the boys, the whole club really, the way we've just sort of hung in there and essentially just trusted what we do. Penrith fullback Edwards was a standout after running for a game-high 322 metres, while also chiming in with a try and try assist. Nathan Cleary was also in imperious form with three try assists - one of which appeared to include a forward pass in the build-up though. Cleary kicked a perfect six-from-six with the boot too, with the champion Penrith halfback controlling the game superbly to all but end the Tigers' hopes of playing finals footy. "I thought we got taught a lesson on game management, field position, kicking game and choking - we got strangled to death by them tonight," Tigers coach Benji Marshall said after the 34-point belting. "They were outstanding." Cleary turns on the burners and finds Edwards!📺 Watch #NRLPanthersTigers on ch.502 or stream on Kayo: BLOG MATCH CENTRE — Fox League (@FOXNRL) July 26, 2025

Matthew Stafford will remain out of practice next week and his return is week to week
Rams coach Sean McVay said earlier this week that quarterback Matthew Stafford would miss the start of training camp, returning for the second block. Stafford, though, will not get back into team drills next week. McVay gave a medical update on Stafford's sore back Saturday, emphasizing that the two-time Pro Bowler has not had a setback in his rehab. Stafford, though, will continue to work on the side into next week. 'The ultimate goal is Houston [for the season opener], and being mindful of that, so we'll take it a week at a time with him,' McVay said, via video from the team. 'Based on sitting down with [the team's sports medicine and performance senior vice president] Reggie [Scott] and with Matthew and talking with Dr. [Robert] Watkins, we feel like that's the smart thing to do. A week at a time with him. 'But I don't have any more concerns. The goal in mind is Houston, and I do think this is the best plan for him.' Stafford, 37, is entering his fifth season with the Rams. He got through 2024 healthy, with the Rams sitting him in their Week 18 game having already clinched the NFC West. Stafford completed 65.8 percent of his throws last season for 3,762 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Rams have a plan to get him through a full season again, and this is part of that plan. The team will be deliberate in Stafford's training camp participation. McVay said he should have characterized Stafford as 'week to week' when he reported the injury earlier this week. 'It does not worry me,' McVay said of the delay to get Stafford into team drills. 'What I probably should have done is say we're taking it a week at a time, but I don't have any reason to be concerned based on the information that's been given. With that being said, I don't think we can be smart enough with somebody like Matthew. I think it's best for him and best for our football team. That's kind of the plan we'll have moving forward. I know that will surprise people, but I did want to at least let you guys know as we're begin fluid with this. But we don't have any reason for concern, but I do think it's the smart thing just based on [getting him ready for the season opener] Sept. 7 . . . with that being the main goal in mind.'
