Panthers training camp preview: How many roster spots will be available at WR?

USA Today7 days ago
With the Carolina Panthers set to report to training camp this week, it's time to take a look at the lay of the land.
Which players are sure to make it through the summer and onto the team's initial 53-man roster? Are there any wild-card candidates who can leave a lasting impression in the coming weeks? And which battles are worth keeping an eye on?
Here is our training camp preview for the Panthers' wide receiver position:
Roster locks
The Panthers, for the first time in franchise history, have now spent back-to-back first-round picks on wideouts. McMillan could be the true No. 1 target for quarterback Bryce Young while Legette will try to find his way after an underwhelming rookie campaign.
Thielen, who turns 35 years old in late August, is back for the third and final season of his contract. He led Carolina in receiving over the first two, with 1,014 yards in 2023 and 615 yards in 2024.
Coker may very well be Thielen's successor at the slot position. Like the savvy veteran, the 23-year-old youngster is a sound route technician with sure hands.
Likely to make it
Moore's connection with head coach Dave Canales, whom he also played under in Seattle and Tampa Bay, is strong. He proved to be a useful weapon for Young towards the end of 2024 as well, recording 35 targets over the team's final seven outings.
Horn seems to have a high-profile connection too, but with president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan. Plus, there may not be another receiver on this roster who has the speed that Horn does—as evidenced by his eye-opening display in the spring.
On the bubble
Renfrow missed the entire 2024 season due to a rough bout with ulcerative colitis. The Myrtle Beach, S.C. native, University of Clemson product and former Pro Bowler has an outside chance to complete a feel-good NFL comeback.
Battle to watch
If Renfrow does finish his story, he might have to do so at the expense of Moore. But Moore's past with Canales and his experience on special teams will give him the upper hand.
Potential sleeper
Speaking of Canales and special teams, the second-year play-caller certainly values the ability to play in the third phase of the game. And that will benefit Chisena—who could step up as a leader for the unit following the offseason departures of safety Sam Franklin Jr. and tight end Feleipe Franks.

We hit 43 in our Raiders countdown to kickoff. Who wore it best and who's wearing it now

We've reached 43 days until the Raiders season opener at Foxboro against the Patriots, With our countdown at 43 days we take a look at who currently dons the number in Silver & Black and who has brought it the most distinction. No. 43 Who's wearing it now: LB Michael Barrett Barrett was a seventh round draft choice by the Carolina Panthers in 2024 out of Michigan. He didn't make the Panthers roster out of camp and spent time on the practice squads of the Seahawks, Browns, and Packers throughout last season. He signed with the Raiders this offseason. Who wore it best: DB George Atkinson As the 190th player selected in the 1968 NFL Draft, Atkinson was recently ranked as the best player ever drafted at that spot in the history of the NFL. He was a Pro Bowler in his first two seasons in the league. And for a decade, Atkinson was the Raiders starting strong safety, including their 1976 Super Bowl XI squad alongside free safety Jack Tatum. Atkinson and Tatum both had 30 career interceptions which is fifth most in Raiders franchise history. Adding three more interceptions in 16 playoff games. His four defensive TD's is tied for fifth in Raiders history and he added one in the postseason as well.

Russell Wilson Reveals Real First Impression of Malik Nabers

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. This week, Russell Wilson and Malik Nabers finally had an opportunity to start playing organized ball together. Throughout the New York Giants' offseason activities, Nabers has been nursing a toe injury. As a result, the Giants have rolled without the star wide receiver, giving Wilson an opportunity to build chemistry with his other weapons. That didn't change the expectations, though. Once Nabers was healthy and ready to suit up again, it was clear he would be Wilson's top target. So far, that connection seems to be solid. "Malik and I have a great relationship, actually," Wilson told reporters. "He has the locker right next to me, and we got to spend a lot of time in San Diego together." Although Nabers and Wilson didn't practice together in OTAs and minicamp, the veteran quarterback hosted a large group of other QBs and pass-catchers out West for some training sessions ahead of camp. Since Wilson started to get to work with Nabers, the veteran quarterback realized the young star has all of the right qualities in a successful young wideout. Russell Wilson #3 of the New York Giants gestures to his teammates during training camp at Quest Diagnostics Training Center on July 23, 2025 in East Rutherford, New Jersey."I just love how he works," Wilson said of Nabers. "A lot of the time, you get talented guys, and their work ethic is super high, but can they keep it consistent? That's what you're always looking for, and I think his consistency, his love for the game, his consistency in his playmaking, his tenacity for the game, his leadership, his thought process, communication, he's not shy, he's great in the meetings. Anytime you have a young star receiver ... It's the communication that you always have, right? But you want those guys to be communicating and active, and he does a tremendous job of that. He's communicating to the other guys what he sees and what he would do. All these different things." Being in the league since 2012, Wilson has played with many different players on all types of levels. It's unclear where he would rank Nabers next to the wideouts Wilson played with in the past, but the Giants' QB made two things clear recently. One: he chose to go to New York because Nabers would be his top target. Two: Wilson believes that Nabers is set to produce like the best wideout in the league. That type of prediction isn't necessarily far-fetched. With a shaky quarterback situation, the Giants still landed 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns out of Nabers. He was a Pro Bowler in his very first season with the team. When the Giants got to work for the first time on Wednesday, Wilson and Nabers connected for multiple scores. It wasn't perfect, but the duo seems to be clicking early on. "I think there's going to be more to it, and we're going to keep developing," Wilson finished. "Obviously, we're just getting started and just kind of warming up and getting hot, but we're excited to work together." For more New York Giants and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
