Panthers training camp preview: How many roster spots will be available at WR?
Which players are sure to make it through the summer and onto the team's initial 53-man roster? Are there any wild-card candidates who can leave a lasting impression in the coming weeks? And which battles are worth keeping an eye on?
Here is our training camp preview for the Panthers' wide receiver position:
Roster locks
The Panthers, for the first time in franchise history, have now spent back-to-back first-round picks on wideouts. McMillan could be the true No. 1 target for quarterback Bryce Young while Legette will try to find his way after an underwhelming rookie campaign.
Thielen, who turns 35 years old in late August, is back for the third and final season of his contract. He led Carolina in receiving over the first two, with 1,014 yards in 2023 and 615 yards in 2024.
Coker may very well be Thielen's successor at the slot position. Like the savvy veteran, the 23-year-old youngster is a sound route technician with sure hands.
Likely to make it
Moore's connection with head coach Dave Canales, whom he also played under in Seattle and Tampa Bay, is strong. He proved to be a useful weapon for Young towards the end of 2024 as well, recording 35 targets over the team's final seven outings.
Horn seems to have a high-profile connection too, but with president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan. Plus, there may not be another receiver on this roster who has the speed that Horn does—as evidenced by his eye-opening display in the spring.
On the bubble
Renfrow missed the entire 2024 season due to a rough bout with ulcerative colitis. The Myrtle Beach, S.C. native, University of Clemson product and former Pro Bowler has an outside chance to complete a feel-good NFL comeback.
Battle to watch
If Renfrow does finish his story, he might have to do so at the expense of Moore. But Moore's past with Canales and his experience on special teams will give him the upper hand.
Potential sleeper
Speaking of Canales and special teams, the second-year play-caller certainly values the ability to play in the third phase of the game. And that will benefit Chisena—who could step up as a leader for the unit following the offseason departures of safety Sam Franklin Jr. and tight end Feleipe Franks.

PFF says Rod Moore's return at safety will strengthen Michigan's defense in 2025 season
Something just wasn't right for the first two-thirds of the season for the Michigan football defense in 2024. There were lapses made, big passing plays, and while the defense would stand tall for two downs, it allowed drives to be extended by the better offenses they faced. To some degree, PFF thinks that the Wolverines have what they need to keep that from happening again in 2025. The reason that analyst Dalton Wasserman gave on the Michigan preview on the PFF college football podcast wasn't just more familiarity to the college game for defensive coordinator Wink Martindale or the bevy of players expected to rotate up front. No, it's a returning player in Rod Moore, who missed all of last season due to tearing his ACL in spring ball. "I'm excited to see him back, too, to free safety," Wasserman said. "I think this year (he's) gonna be the glue that holds the secondary together. He missed last year because he tore his ACL in the spring. But the two previous years, per PFF's wins above average metric, he was the second most valuable safety in college football six interceptions over those two years big part of their national championship-winning team in 2023. Just to see him back on the field, because I think Michigan, last year, you could see it with him out and with Keon (Sabb) transferring to Alabama, and a little more of a struggle covering over the middle of the field. On the outside, they were still great with Will Johnson and Jyaire Hill, those corners that they always have going there at Michigan, but struggled over the middle. "I think Rod Moore is gonna be a big piece of fixing that problem. He's got great recovery speed. He's got good eyes back there and as long as he can run like he used to before the torn ACL, I think Wink Martindale is gonna have a lot of fun playing a lot of single-high with Rod Moore back at free safety." The big question for Moore is whether or not he can return fully healthy. He told The Wolverine on Monday that he's up to 80-85% healthy at this juncture, but being healthy and capable of returning to full game speed and instinct is a completely different thing altogether. If Moore does take some time to get going, the Wolverines are excited about many of the options they have at safety as it is. Brandyn Hillman, Mason Curtis, TJ Metcalf, Tevis Metcalf, and Jaden Mangham are all strong options for the maize and blue in the middle of the secondary, even if Moore is healthy and ready to go. Michigan is set to begin fall camp on July 29 with eyes on the season opener on August 30 against New Mexico at The Big House.

3 free agent safeties the Saints could call to replace Tyrann Mathieu
The New Orleans Saints are in a rather intriguing position when it comes to their 2025 season, as they have moved on from many of their veteran pieces, and in some cases, they have retired. One of the most recent updates was regarding Tyrann Mathieu, who, to the surprise of many, retired from the NFL on Tuesday. This leaves the Saints with a clear gap at the safety position, even despite a few offseason additions to the room. Starting a rookie such as Jonas Sanker right off the bat would be difficult, as it would not give him time to develop, but at the same time, the franchise is clearly going in the direction of a younger core. With that said, getting someone to take the spot for a year alongside Justin Reid, who can provide value as a starter and give Sanker some time to work with the defensive scheme, would be beneficial. So, here are three free agents the Saints could look into in the coming weeks: 1. Justin Simmons Clearly one of the most talented players on the market, and despite choosing to go to the Atlanta Falcons last offseason over the Saints, he has plenty of gas left in the tank to give, which is what matters. The 31-year-old had a quality season with Atlanta in 2024, and the five seasons prior, he was either a Pro Bowler, All-Pro, or both. This is the type of talent that could change the Saints' secondary, and maybe they will consider looking into him once again. 2. Jordan Whitehead Jordan Whitehead is an extremely fun option to add to the Saints' secondary, as he has been an absolute menace in the secondary for multiple years now. Despite a somewhat down year in 2024 by his standards, he was making the switch back to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after two years away with the New York Jets. In the span of four seasons from 2020 to 2023, he picked up 10 interceptions, 29 pass deflections, and 21 tackles for loss. An intriguing option for the Saints who could be a fun pairing alongside Justin Reid. 3. Quandre Diggs Quandre Diggs should be a no-brainer to look into for New Orleans, as he has been an absolute standout for multiple years of his career, and despite an injury in 2024, is ready to come back, as was reported Tuesday morning by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Diggs had three consecutive Pro Bowl seasons from 2020-2022, picking up 14 interceptions in that span along with 24 pass deflections. While he may be a little further removed from his prime seasons compared to Whitehead, he could be someone to watch for as a short-term rental.
