Zohr Gas Field Set for Major Boost as Phase Three Targets 1 Trillion Cubic Feet
Preliminary projections suggest that the third phase of Egypt's Zohr gas field development will add around 1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to the field's overall reserves.
The update was shared during an in-depth workshop at Eni's headquarters in Milan, Italy, attended by key stakeholders to evaluate the field's future and long-term production sustainability.
A major highlight of this phase is the planned deployment of a floating processing unit, positioned 220 kilometers offshore. This facility will separate gas and condensates, with production scheduled to commence by 2028.
The workshop also reviewed ongoing exploration and drilling efforts, as authorities maintain close oversight of Zohr's development to ensure timely execution.

Zohr gas field output increases after well redrilling - Energy
Egypt's Zohr gas field has increased its natural gas output by 60 million cubic feet per day following the successful redrilling of the Zohr-6 well, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced on Friday. The redrilling was carried out using the deepwater drilling rig "Saipem 10000," after it returned to the Zohr gas field in January to resume operations per the approved development plan. Following the completion of Zohr-6, the rig carried out its scheduled tasks. It began drilling at the "Zohr-13" well, which engineering studies estimate will add 55 million cubic feet of gas per day. The drilling operations mark a significant step toward strengthening the natural gas supply system. They will further enhance domestic production levels and confirm earlier predictions by the Ministry of Petroleum. Furthermore, these efforts align with the ministry's strategy to boost domestic production, ensure energy availability, and provide petroleum products to various sectors while meeting citizens' needs. Nada Mustafa Karim Badawi, Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, has joined the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025 conference, taking place September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town – as a speaker. His participation comes as the country advances its latest licensing round, seeking to increase production through fresh investment in offshore and onshore blocks. With the round set to close in the second half of 2025, Egypt is gearing up for accelerated growth across its upstream industry. Egypt's latest licensing round was launched in March 2025, featuring 13 offshore and onshore blocks across key hydrocarbon regions. Available acreage includes seven undeveloped fields in the Mediterranean Sea, three offshore exploration blocks in the Gulf of Suez and three onshore exploration areas in the Western Desert. The bid round forms part of a broader strategy by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to attract new investment across the upstream sector and follows a previous 12-block round which closed in February 2025. Under the leadership of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, the country has set a target of drilling 586 oil and gas wells by 2030 and is strengthening collaboration with international partners to realize this goal. Recent deals and exploration milestones align with this strategy, indicating a positive growth trajectory for the country's upstream oil and gas sector. Egypt approved two transactions by Russian energy firm Lukoil in May 2025, covering exploration and production rights for acreage in the South Wadi El-Sahl region of the Eastern Desert and the Wadi El-Sahl area. Energy major ExxonMobil signed an MoU for a new operational framework in the Cairo and Masry offshore concession areas of the Mediterranean Sea while energy major Eni is spearheading a $26 billion investment strategy across three North African countries – including Egypt. In terms of drilling, Eni is preparing to drill two development wells at the Zohr gas field in 2025. ExxonMobil plans to drill a new offshore gas exploration well in the North Marakia Offshore Concession. The Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company also plans to drill 17 exploratory and evaluation wells in 2025/2026, targeting acreage in the Delta and Mediterranean Sea. The company is investing $434 million in drilling activities. Beyond exploration, Egypt is working toward scaling-up its production and export capacity to support growing demand in both regional and international markets. As one of Africa's top gas producers, Egypt already plays an instrumental part in global supply chains, but upcoming projects stand to further consolidate its position as a global exporter. Turkey is deploying a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) to Egypt, which will provide LNG storage and regasification services to the country during peak demand periods in 2025. Another agreement was signed with energy infrastructure firm Höegh Evi for the supply of a FSRU, which will be situated at the Port of Sumed in Q4, 2026. The FSRU enhance the country's regasification and export capacity. Meanwhile, energy major Chevron announced plans to conduct a seabed survey in the eastern Mediterranean, aiming to develop a pipeline that will transport gas from Cyprus' Aphrodite field to processing facilities in Egypt. This will not only support regional gas monetization but cements Egypt's role as a regional petroleum hub. Egypt to operate one of Mediterranean's largest gas wells in June, producing 50 million cubic feet daily
The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum plans to produce approximately 40 to 50 million cubic feet of natural gas from the Zohr 6 well in Egypt this June. A government official informed Al-Arabiya Business that Italian company Eni is accelerating efforts to begin natural gas production from 'Zohr 6' through its joint venture with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, Petrobel. This aims to meet the Egyptian market's gas needs for production and operational processes, particularly for the electricity and industrial sectors. According to the official, the company is currently undertaking water leak prevention operations in the wells. This involves isolation through injection processes and the use of certain chemicals to prevent water leakage and formation during gas production from the field, which is located in the Mediterranean Sea off Egypt. The Ministry of Petroleum announced last January that a drilling vessel had arrived in Egyptian waters, signaling the resumption of plans to develop the offshore field and boost production. In July 2024, during a visit by the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum to the Zohr field, Petrobel Chairman Khaled Mouafi confirmed that investments since the start of the partnership with Eni had reached approximately $39 billion. Of this, about one-third, or $13.5 billion, had been spent on developing the Zohr field itself, with ambitious future plans for further investment. Zohr field production The official noted that Zohr gas production currently stands at 1.1 to 1.2 billion cubic feet per day, representing nearly 30 percent of Egypt's total gas output. He indicated that the Egyptian government is relying on drilling operations in the Zohr field to add new gas volumes and meet domestic consumption. He also explained that cooperation plans between the Egyptian government and Italy's Eni also aim to develop production facilities at the processing plant. In March 2025, the National United Petroleum Services Company (NESR) secured a nine-month contract worth $120 million to supply chemicals for the Zohr gas field. These chemicals are used for well injection to prevent water leakage, as Ayman Hammam, NESR's regional director for Egypt, told Al-Arabiya Business. The official further confirmed that, through its foreign partners, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum successfully drilled 8 gas wells and evaluated another 8 wells in offshore concession areas in the Mediterranean Sea between July 2024 and last May. He pointed out that the drilling and evaluation work for a total of 16 wells contributed to 5 new gas discoveries in the Mediterranean during 2024-2025, which are expected to significantly boost domestic natural gas production in the medium term. He affirmed that a decline in domestic gas production has prompted the Egyptian government to secure over 1.6 billion cubic feet per day of gas via pipelines and LNG shipments. This volume is necessary to cover between 25 percent and 30 percent of the gap between gas production and consumption in Egypt.
