By: Ricardo Unto Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has made key strides in food security under the SMJ 1.0 development plan, including the formation of the Sabah Padi and Rice Board and a padi takaful scheme for farmers. Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan told the State Assembly that 100 hectares of new padi land were developed in Kota Marudu, and grazing reserves can now be converted for agriculture. Sabah also exported its first MD2 pineapples to Singapore, launched new plantations in Beaufort and Kota Marudu, and built six Agricultural Produce Collection Centres. Rubber plantations grew to 241,245 hectares, with latex output rising fourfold. Livestock numbers rose by 2.47 million between 2021 and 2023, while self-sufficiency levels for chicken meat, eggs, goat meat, and fresh milk surpassed 100pc. The Kinabalu Livestock Integrated Centre in Tawau now houses over 15,000 animals, and Ko-Nelayan boosted hybrid grouper fry production to nearly 63,000. Freshwater fish output rose to 2,006 tonnes in 2023, and marine fish landings totaled over 659,000 tonnes in three years. * Read full report in tomorrow's print paper or log in or sign up for e-paper and premium online news access. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss.

Mapping Sabah's grassroots innovations to inclusive and sustainable futures
Published on: Monday, July 14, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 14, 2025 By: Paul Canigea, Anita Limjoon, Fiona V Loijon Text Size: The Institute for Development Studies Sabah (IDS), Sabah Techpreneur Association (Sata) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) launched a research project to map grassroots innovations across the state to explore this potential. THE demand for innovation is global, and particularly in the context of sustainable development goals. Grassroots innovation is becoming a powerful tool in tackling local challenges across Southeast Asia. In countries like India, innovation ecosystems have grown significantly and in 2023 alone over 75,000 patents were granted. Vietnam and Thailand are also investing in rural innovations which promote sustainability, for example, solar energy projects which provide reliable power to local communities. For instance, Thailand has built solar microgrids in rural areas, allowing villages to produce and control their own electricity. Small scale hydropower projects have been deployed in remote areas in Indonesia to supply renewable energy to support local economies. These examples show how improved infrastructure can support community driven solutions that can promote both economic growth and environmental sustainability. Sabah's role is unique in this regional context. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article. Over 60,000 in Sabah, Labuan enjoy improved electricity from Petra projects
Published on: Monday, July 14, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 14, 2025 Text Size: Fadillah and others visit the KKBU project. More than 60,000 electricity users in Sabah and Labuan are now enjoying a more stable power supply following the completion of seven energy projects worth over RM260 million by the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra). The projects, which include grid upgrades, new substation connections and enhanced safety systems, cover areas from Tanjung Aru to Ranau, Batu Sapi and Labuan. Deputy Prime Minister and Petra Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof officiated the handover ceremony at the Kota Kinabalu Bulk Supply Substation (KKBU), part of a special federal initiative known as PPKBES. The KKBU project, under the 10th Malaysia Plan, replaces outdated systems and now supports 11,452 users including those at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, with enhanced capacity and newer gas-insulated switchgear and transformers. Among the other completed works is the RM34.92 million Labuan–Sipitang grid upgrade, enabling Sabah to eventually import up to 30MW of electricity from Sarawak through a regional Asean Power Grid once Sarawak's portion is completed. Inland, the RM31.3 million Ranau substation has connected the town to the state grid, reducing diesel dependency for over 15,000 users, while the RM30 million Batu Sapi substation has improved distribution in Sandakan's surrounding areas. Also completed are key infrastructure upgrades at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan's Rancha-Rancha substation, and a submarine cable protection system - all contributing to a stronger, cleaner and more reliable power network across the region. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who is also the Kiulu assemblyman, presented the awards during the Santai Pitimungan Belia Kiulu programme held at Kampung Malanggang Lama. The event, which drew over 500 attendees, was organised by Kelab Belia Prihatin Kiulu and the Kiulu Tourism Association, with support from the Kiulu ADUN's Office. He also proposed the launch of an Idea Pitch Mini platform to support youth-led business or community projects with potential funding and guidance. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
