Over 60,000 in Sabah, Labuan enjoy improved electricity from Petra projects

More than 60,000 electricity users in Sabah and Labuan are now enjoying a more stable power supply following the completion of seven energy projects worth over RM260 million by the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra). The projects, which include grid upgrades, new substation connections and enhanced safety systems, cover areas from Tanjung Aru to Ranau, Batu Sapi and Labuan. Deputy Prime Minister and Petra Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof officiated the handover ceremony at the Kota Kinabalu Bulk Supply Substation (KKBU), part of a special federal initiative known as PPKBES. The KKBU project, under the 10th Malaysia Plan, replaces outdated systems and now supports 11,452 users including those at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, with enhanced capacity and newer gas-insulated switchgear and transformers. Among the other completed works is the RM34.92 million Labuan–Sipitang grid upgrade, enabling Sabah to eventually import up to 30MW of electricity from Sarawak through a regional Asean Power Grid once Sarawak's portion is completed. Inland, the RM31.3 million Ranau substation has connected the town to the state grid, reducing diesel dependency for over 15,000 users, while the RM30 million Batu Sapi substation has improved distribution in Sandakan's surrounding areas. Third-batch LMS Acquisition Deal To Be Finalised After Tabling Of 13MP
KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (Bernama) -- The decision on the acquisition of the third batch of the littoral mission ships (LMS) for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) is expected to be finalised only after the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), slated for later this month. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin confirmed this when addressing speculation surrounding the purchase of new naval vessels, following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent visit to Italy. 'All new acquisitions will be confirmed after the tabling of the 13MP. During the Prime Minister's recent visits to Italy and France, the matter was among the topics discussed. 'The countries involved have also expressed willingness to offer credit facilities should Malaysia proceed with any procurement involving their assets, which could include infrastructure or public amenities support,' he said at a press conference after launching the LTAT Foundation's Five Education Initiative Programmes, here today. On July 2, Anwar held meetings in Rome with leaders of major Italian defence and energy firms, including Fincantieri, Leonardo, and ENI, to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the defence and energy sectors. The visit also saw the announcement of potential investments worth RM8.13 billion. During Mohamed Khaled's official visit to Türkiye in June last year, the Ministry of Defence had awarded a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) for the procurement of three second-batch LMS vessels to Turkish defence firm Savunma Teknolojileri Muhendislik (STM). These second-batch LMS vessels are based on STM's Ada-class corvette design and are equipped for multiple roles, including patrol missions and anti-submarine warfare (ASW). Each of the ships will also be armed with ATMACA surface-to-surface missiles and air defence systems. Capable of operating at sea for up to 14 days, each vessel can accommodate 111 crew members and will include a helipad and hangar for a medium-lift ASW helicopter or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Malaysia previously spent over RM1 billion to acquire four first-batch LMS vessels from China, which have been gradually integrated into the RMN's fleet since 2020.

Khaled: Defence procurements to be finalised after 13th Malaysia Plan
KUALA LUMPUR: New defence asset procurement will only be confirmed after the government presents the 13th Malaysia Plan, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He said the ministry is waiting for the government to approve the procurement proposals submitted. "All new procurements will be finalised only after the government tables the 13th Malaysia Plan. "First, we have to wait for the government's decision by July 31 on proposals submitted for approval (on the procurement of assets). "These assets are crucial in our effort to build a future force aligned with the modernisation of the armed forces," he said in response to questions about the possibility of Malaysia acquiring littoral mission ship batch 3 and multi role support ship assets from Italy following the prime minister's recent visit to the country. He said discussions during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's visit to Italy and France focused on offers from those countries should Malaysia proceed with acquisitions involving their defence products. "They are prepared to extend credit facilities, meaning they are willing to provide financial arrangements so that budget constraints will not hinder us from carrying out military modernisation or asset procurement." Khaled added that any acquisition agreements would be based on government-to-government arrangements to ensure better pricing. "What matters to us is that the prices offered are based on government-to-government deals, which means the prices are more favourable. If it were through open tender, it is unlikely any country could offer the same terms," he said. Earlier, it was reported that Anwar, in his visit to Italy, held an engagement session with major Italian firms, including Fincantieri, Leonardo and ENI, toboost cooperation in the defence and energy sectors.
