A fire at a telecom company in Cairo injures 14 and temporarily disrupts service
CAIRO (AP) — A fire engulfed the main telecom company building in downtown Cairo on Monday, injuring at least 14 people and prompting a temporary outage of internet and mobile phone services, officials said.
The 14 injured people were taken to nearby hospitals, the Health Ministry said in a statement. A witness told news broadcaster Cairo 24 that two emergency responders suffered burns on their hands.
The fire started on the seventh floor of a landmark 10-story Telecom Egypt building in the Ramses area of Cairo, the governor's office said in a statement.
Ambulances and firetrucks were on site as plumes of dark smoke rose in downtown Cairo. Firefighters put up ladders as firetrucks spewed water to contain the blaze, while security officials cordoned off the area.
The fire broke in an equipment room of Telecom Egypt and led to a temporary disruption of telecom services, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said in a statement. Telecom services were expected to be restored within hours, the authority said. Online payment services were also disrupted.
The fire took place a few kilometers (miles) from where a deadly blaze at a train station in 2019 killed at least 25 people and injured at least 45 others after a collision caused a huge explosion.

Fire crews are currently tackling a fire which has broken out on Main Street in Barry. A spokesperson for the South Wales Fire and Rescue control room said: "Crews are still there so we don't have many details on the situation just yet. "The fire in the building is part of a terraced property. We got the call at 14:49 and we've got four appliances and it is still ongoing." The Welsh Ambulance Service was also spotted at the scene. Specialist crews in full protective gear could be seen at the site and ventilating the smoke-logged home. When we visited the site, the smoke and blaze looked no longer visible at the time of us being there, and there are no reports of injuries so far. An American Airlines flight was forced to abandon take-off when a fire broke out, forcing all 182 people on board to evacuate. Mark Tsurkis, 50, said: 'When the plane stopped about 30 seconds to a minute later, somebody said: 'Smoke, fire'.' 'And then a lot of people, of course, started panicking' he recalled. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said: 'American Airlines Flight 3023 reported a possible landing gear incident during departure from Denver International Airport around 2.45 ppm local time Saturday, July 26. 'Passengers evacuated on the runway and are being transported to the terminal by bus. 'The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was headed to Miami International Airport. The FAA will investigate. Contact the airline for additional information.' An American Airlines spokesperson said: 'American Airlines flight 3023 experienced a maintenance issue prior to take-off at Denver International Airport. 'All customers and crew deplaned safely, and the aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team. 'We thank our team members for their professionalism and apologise to our customers for their experience.' The airline says it arranged for a replacement flight for passengers later that Saturday.
