UFC on ESPN 71 video: Neil Magny grounds and pounds Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos for TKO
The UFC welterweight fight, wins, decision wins, total fight time, total strikes and significant strikes leader returned to the win column with an impressive stoppage of Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos at UFC on ESPN 71. The bout took place at the UFC Apex, and came to an end by TKO at 4:39 of Round 2.
Magny (30-13 MMA, 23-12 UFC) fought through a close opening round that two of the official judges scored for dos Santos (25-10-1 MMA, 11-6-1 UFC). In the second round, the fight went to the ground, where Magny worked through a few tough positions from his back. Once he found space to get out, Magny took dos Santos back to the mat, secured back control, and proceeded to rain down heavy ground and pound until referee Mark Smith saw enough.

With the result, Magny snaps a two-fight skid to pick up his 30th career win just a few hours before his birthday.

"I tell everybody, you just have to set those goals and start knocking them out," Magny told MMA Junkie at the UFC on ESPN 71 post-fight press conference. "Goal 1 was to go out there a d get a win, that part is done. Now let's go find the next opponent, and hopefully it gets me closer to the rankings, and before you know it, I'm right back in there, ready to go." Magny, who's been fighting in the UFC since 2013, was coming off stoppage loses to young contenders Michael Morales and Carlos Prates prior to UFC on ESPN 71. With the win, not only was he able to stop a skid, but he also furthered his record for the most wins in UFC welterweight history. Despite nearing 40 years of age and having over 40 professional MMA fights, "The Haitian Sensation" is still feeling good, and very much liked the way he performed against Zaleski dos Santos. "Man, I felt great," Magny said. "Elizeu is a great opponent, he's a veteran as well. He made some really good adjustments in his training camp to come out here and fight in a way he thought he had the best chance of winning. He definitely pulled a different approach than what we're used to seeing from him in film. It just made him be an offensive grappler in that fight, but we're both veterans, and we figure out a way to get it done." Khabib Nurmagomedov: Conor McGregor can redeem image if he 'change how he is living'
Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn't think it's too late for Conor McGregor to put his life back on a more enlightened path. Nurmagomedov (29-0 MMA, 13-0 UFC) vs. McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) is arguably the most heated rivalry in UFC history, with their issues coming to a head at UFC 229 in October 2018 when "The Eagle" scored a fourth-round submission in their grudge match prior to a brawl breaking out inside the octagon at the conclusion of the bout. Their lives went down splinted paths after that night, with Nurmagomedov going on to be a dominant UFC lightweight champion until he retired from competition in October 2020. McGregor, meanwhile, has only won one fight since, and has found himself caught in a plethora of legal incidents and outside-the-cage controveries. Although few would blame Nurmagomedov if he had zero care about McGregor after all these years, he admits he hopes things turn in a more positive direction, and said it's still possible. 'This is punishment – the most beautiful part of this is Allah always give the chance to come back," Nurmagomedov said Saturday during an appearance for Miftaah Institute on Saturday in New York (H/T: Sneako). "'We always have in this world the chance to come back, and this is the most beautiful thing. It doesn't matter how you've been, Allah is gonna give you a chance always to come back. ... I think he has a chance. He has to change how he is living." 'Why am I talking about this? If he's going to change, he can change with him so many other lives too," Nurmagomedov said. 'That's why I wish him to change himself. If he's not going change, it will be punishment all his life.'
