Louisville strikes for 6 runs in 8th to eliminate Arizona from College World Series with an 8-3 win
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Zion Rose's two-run single gave Louisville its first lead during a six-run eighth inning and the Cardinals knocked Arizona out of the College World Series with an 8-3 win Sunday.
Louisville's 19th come-from-behind win of the season moved the Cardinals (41-23) to another elimination game Tuesday against the loser of Sunday night's Coastal Carolina-Oregon State matchup.
Arizona (44-21) has lost six straight CWS games over three appearances since 2016.
The Cardinals trailed 3-1 early and came up empty after having runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings. When they broke through, the runs came in bunches.
Lucas Moore's sacrifice fly in the seventh made it a one-run game against Garrett Hicks (5-2), and then Arizona had an improbable meltdown with National Stopper of the Year Tony Pluta on the mound after the Cardinals' first two batters reached in the eighth.
Tague Davis's blooper loaded the bases, and then Rose punched a two-run single down the right-field line to put Louisville up 4-3. No. 9 batter Kamau Neighbors singled in another run to cap his 4-for-4 day.
Garrett Pike got caught in a rundown between third and home and scored when Pluta dropped the ball trying to tag him at the plate. Neighbors came home on Alex Alicea's squeeze bunt, and Matt Klein singled to left for the final run.
Tucker Biven (4-0) pitched the last four innings for the Cardinals, working around two singles to hold Arizona scoreless in the ninth. Louisville is 26-0 when leading after eight innings and 203-5-1 since the start of 2019.
Adonys Guzman, who singled in the Wildcats' first run in the first inning, hit his second homer of the NCAA Tournament and ninth of the season to give his team a two-run lead in the third.
Freshman Smith Bailey gave Arizona another strong start. He went six innings for the fifth time in six starts, including three straight in the NCAA Tournament. He allowed five earned runs over 18 postseason innings (2.50 ERA).
This was the teams' second meeting of the season. In February, Louisville won 13-1 in Arlington, Texas, in a game shortened to eight innings by the run rule.

Those in attendance noticed that outside linebacker Zaven Collins was in a different position. He was lined up off the ball at inside linebacker with Mack Wilson. He has lined up on inside on the defensive line, played off the ball and blitzed from the inside. It just happened to be that on those snaps, he was back where he started. The Cardinals' third-down package on defense, sometimes called their "Nascar" package because it deploys five or six linebackers with either one or no defensive tackle on the field. They all stand up at the line of scrimmage, makinig it difficult for the opposing quarterback to identify who is rushing, who is dropping and where the assignments on defense will be. So while it was surprising in practice to see him in an old spot, we shouldn't expect it much once the regular season begins. Alcantara pitches 5 scoreless innings, Pauley hits 2-run HR as Marlins beat Cardinals 5-0
Graham Pauley hit his first home run for the Marlins, Sandy Alcantara pitched five scoreless innings and Miami beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 on Tuesday night. Alcantara (6-9) gave up three hits with three walks, struck out four and hit two batters. Calvin Faucher, Ronny Henriquez and Valente Bellozo combined to pitch four scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Troy Johnston in his first major league game singled off St. Louis starter Sonny Gray (10-5) in his first at-bat and Pauley's homer made it 2-0. The 28-year-old Johnston went into the game with 636 career games played and 2,384 at-bats in the minors. Kyle Stowers hit a two-out double and Otto Lopez followed with an RBI single to snap a string of 13 consecutive at-bats without a hit and give the Marlins a 3-0 lead in the fifth. After Dane Myers singled, Eric Wagaman hit an RBI double and Xavier Edwards followed with a run-scoring triple to make it 5-0 in the sixth. Cardinals reliever John King retired Edwards and Jesús Sánchez before he left the game due to an apparent injury in the ninth. Victor Scott II had two stolen bases and is tied with Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Chicago Cubs for second in the National League with 29 this season. Pittsburgh's Oneil Cruz leads the majors with 34 steals. Pedro Pagés singled and Scott walked before Iván Herrera was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the fifth, but Alcantara got Alec Burleson to strike out swinging to end the inning and preserve a 3-0 lead. The Cardinals, who had four hits and struck out 10 times, were shut out for the 10th time this season. Cal Quantrill (3-8, 4.95 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Marlins on Wednesday against Miles Mikolas (6-7, 4.94).
