James Knight, an expert on cybersecurity, believes that if tensions rise, Iran could launch a digital attack on US infrastructure. Although a long-term collapse is unlikely, Americans should remain vigilant, keep their devices up to date, and be prepared for potential short-term issues.
What kind of cyberattack could Iran launch?
If the US formally intervenes in the conflict between Israel and Iran, Americans should expect bank disruptions and possible blackouts, stated James Knight, as quoted in a report by the Daily Mail.
Live Events
The Iranian government may launch a last-ditch effort to exact revenge by activating malware that hackers have already implanted in US systems.
Knight warned, "We can anticipate some lone wolves who will want to carry out some sort of retaliation, even if the US does not get involved."
Knight disclosed that in the digital sphere, this might entail several groups of Iranian hackers targeting vital US infrastructure, such as hospitals, power grids, banks, and oil pipelines.
Knight clarified that major power plants and energy production facilities are the most likely targets of a cyberattack, which is more likely to cause chaos across the United States than to cause long-term damage.
He remarked, "It would be the retaliation, tit for tat, sort of attacks." "Destroying things, resulting in blackouts."
Knight clarified that each Iranian cyber unit has a distinct area of expertise, with some concentrating on stealing passwords, private data, and breaching large networks, such as hospitals, to target regular Americans.
He said that hackers could access ICU medical devices and compromise a hospital receptionist's computer, causing life-saving equipment to be shut down across the country.
Hackers might target digital currency platforms, payment processors, and American banks in the interim. They won't topple the United States. "They're only trying to cause pain," he said.
How can Americans protect themselves?
Here are some public protection measures against hacking, as per James Knight.
Be cautious of emails and set strong passwords.
Regularly update computers and mobile devices with the latest security updates.
Switch to multi-factor authentication by sending a secret code to a person's phone or email when logging into certain sites.
Passkeys are a passwordless, phishing-resistant technology that uses cryptographic keys stored on a user's devices and authenticated using biometrics.

Could malware already be inside U.S. systems?
Iran has an advantage because, in anticipation of the impending conflict, their hackers have infected American computer networks with malicious malware. For years, hacker groups can remain in systems, hardening them and integrating themselves covertly. Only when Iran feels it is absolutely necessary or when it has nothing left to lose in a conflict with the US do these malicious programs get activated.
Iran is known to take credit for US defense breaches, often boasting about their plans. The US government's cybersecurity teams are however, ready to combat the possible threat, but at the same time Iranian cyber units are proficient and have been conducting attacks for years, as per a report by the Daily Mail.
However, Americans must exercise caution and be prepared for such term attacks.
FAQs
What would the Iranian cyberattack target?
According to experts, Iran would most likely target US banks, power grids, hospitals, and cryptocurrency platforms to cause chaos and send a message, rather than inflicting permanent damage.
Can average Americans do anything to prepare?
Experts recommend using strong passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and remaining vigilant online. It's also a good idea to keep extra cash, food, and supplies on hand in case of a blackout.

Trump dumps 25% tariff on India from Friday, plus penalty for buying Russian oil
NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 25% tariff on all goods imported from India, along with an unspecified penalty, from Aug 1 after the two countries failed to reach an interim trade deal, triggering nervousness among exporters. After making several claims over the last four months of having got India to agree to slash tariffs, Trump took to social media to announce the stiff duties and linked the action to India's high trade surplus with the US and purchase of Russian oil and arms. "Also, they (India) have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia's largest buyer of energy, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine - all things not good! India will therefore be paying 25%, plus a penalty for the above, starting Aug 1," Trump posted on Truth Social. The US president had earlier announced a "reciprocal tariff" of 26% on India. He later paused it, but left a 10% baseline tariff on all countries. Trump's proposed penalty has complicated the calculations for Indian businesses. Over the last three months, he has managed to get other trading partners such as the European Union, Japan, Britain and Vietnam to open up their markets for American goods in return for lowering the tariffs, something he could not do with India due to its reluctance to offer concessions on farm and dairy products. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ultra Lux 4BHK homes at 7 Mahalaxmi from 10.81 Cr* 7 Mahalaxmi, Runwal Group Enquire Now Undo Within the govt there was clarity that it would not settle for a sub-par deal that did not provide for adequate tariff cuts in the US for Indian textiles, leather and footwear and lower-end auto parts. Trump announcement seen as bid to mount pressure on India to agree to US demands President Trump managed to get other trading partners such as EU, Japan, Britain and Vietnam to open up their markets for US goods in return for lowering tariffs, something he could not do with India due to its reluctance to offer concessions on farm and dairy products. Within govt there was clarity that it would not settle for a sub-par deal that did not provide for adequate tariff cuts in the US for Indian textiles, leather and footwear and lower-end auto parts. The Trump administration's argument that it did not have the legislative mandate to revert to reducing tariffs to zero, as is the case with most trade agreements, did not find traction with Indian negotiators, who were asked by the leadership to leverage the large and growing market offered by India. During the negotiations, India had indicated its willingness to buy larger quantities of LNG, fertiliser and defence equipment from the US, but the demands kept increasing. Trump's repeated attempt to link the Operation Sindoor ceasefire to his offer for a good trade deal only complicated matters for him. Over the last few weeks, there was also an attempt to prepare industry for possible imposition of tariffs. While talks for the proposed trade deal will continue, the announcement is seen as a move to mount pressure on India to agree to American demands. In the meantime, businesses fear that the uncertainty over the penalty will make buyers reluctant to place orders, some of which may flow to other countries. Countries like Vietnam, which have negotiated lower levies, may hurt India. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . Karnataka buys land in Goa to build Kannada Bhavan after decades-long demand
Belagavi: In a significant step toward fulfilling a long-standing demand, the Karnataka govt has purchased two acres in Goa for the construction of a Kannada Bhavan. The initiative aims to serve the linguistic and cultural needs of the Kannada-speaking community residing in the neighbouring state. The project is being funded by the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority (KBADA). It was announced in the 2022–23 State Budget, following persistent appeals from Kannada organisations in Goa. To chart out the next phase of the project, KBADA chairman Somanna Bevinamarad held a meeting in Goa on Wednesday. KBADA member Prakash Mattihalli, Siddanna Meti (Kannada Sahitya Parishad – Goa Border Unit), and other committee members, including Hanumant Reddy, Rajesh Shetty, and Shivanand Bingi, were present at the meeting, according to the release. During the meeting, Bevinamarad confirmed that 11,571.2 sqft of land (survey No. 113/9) at Ambarame Matta in Cortalim Village, Vasco-Mormugao taluk, was acquired for the project. "Kannadigas in Goa have been requesting a Kannada Bhavan for over four decades. Nearly six lakh Kannadigas reside in Goa. Responding to their long-pending appeal, the govt procured private land, and construction will begin soon," Bevinamarad said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The proposed Kannada Bhavan will be a multi-purpose facility, including parking in the basement, a commercial complex (for rental income to support maintenance) on the ground floor, a dining hall and library on the first floor, a cultural hall with a seating capacity of 1,000 people on the second floor, and 10–15 VIP guest rooms for Kannadigas visiting the bhavan on the third floor. The state govt initially sought land from the Goa govt, making several formal requests. However, with no positive response, Karnataka opted to purchase private land to proceed with the construction independently. The initiative was taken in response to continuous lobbying by the Akhila Goa Kannada Maha Sangha, among other Kannada organisations, for a dedicated cultural and community space in Goa.

State: Justice Ganguly's order on teachers' appt had ‘mismatch'
Kolkata: Former Calcutta HC judge Abhijit Ganguly's order annulling the appointment of 32,000 primary teachers in state-run primary schools due to corruption allegations, had a "mismatch" between the judge's observations and his subsequent directions, alleged state counsel Abhratosh Majumdar, while pleading against the order on Wednesday. Making his arguments before the bench of justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Reetobroto Mitra in HC, Majumdar asked why Justice Ganguly hadn't stopped the successful TET 2014 candidates from appearing in the subsequent TET 2016 or TET 2020 if there was a whiff of corruption in the 2014 exam process. "Why didn't the judge distinguish between tainted and untainted candidates if he had reasons to believe that there might have been corruption in the TET 2014 examination?" Majumdar asked. The senior counsel asserted there was no finding in the single bench order establishing corruption until March 2017, a month after most appointments were made in Feb 2017. He also questioned Justice Ganguly's decision to "cherry-pick" candidates. "Only five districts — Howrah, Hooghly, Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur, and Murshidabad — were chosen for scrutiny without citing grounds for selecting these districts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Emergency Generators in Montalvo: (Prices May Surprise You) Emergency Generator | Search Ads Search Now Undo The judge didn't call all the candidates from these districts, either.
