Completion of Pragati Maidan tunnel project stalled until post-monsoon approval in Delhi
Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma on Monday announced that the project could be completed within eight to nine months once it receives a final nod from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Verma, who visited the site with BJP MP Manoj Tiwari and senior PWD officials, said the department had concluded all necessary technical assessments and submitted its revised proposal to the Centre.
'This is the last leg of the Pragati Maidan transit corridor. Once we get approval, we'll immediately resume work. It's a critical link to ease traffic movement between Central and South Delhi,' he said.
The underpass in question lies on Bhairo Marg and is key for commuters travelling between Central Delhi and major junctions like Sarai Kale Khan, ISBT, and Ashram. While most of the 1.36-km tunnel and five underpasses were opened to the public in June 2022, this stretch had been delayed due to severe technical and environmental challenges.

Over 7L saplings to be planted this year: Municipal Corporation of Delhi
NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said that a target of planting over 7 lakh saplings has been set for this year, which includes 3 lakh trees, 4 lakh shrubs, and 3,298 bamboo plants. The civic body, while launching the plantation drive on Sunday, said that the campaign has gained momentum during the monsoon and it will be continued in a phased manner throughout the year. A total of 66,242 saplings have already been planted across the 12 zones of Delhi, said the chairperson of the standing committee, Satya Sharma. 'The horticulture department of MCD has launched the drive on a war footing during the rainy season. It will play a crucial role in cleaning Delhi's air, reducing temperatures, and conserving biodiversity,' Sharma added. Sharma stated that a high-level meeting was held with senior officials from the horticulture department to review the Green Action Plan. The discussion centred on strategies to achieve the plantation targets for the year, identifying appropriate sites, and ensuring the proper care and maintenance of the planted saplings. Talking about the 'Ek Ped Maa ke Naam' campaign, Sharma said, 'I urge all Delhiites to plant at least one tree for their mother, symbolising environmental service and devotion to motherhood.' Sharma said, 'We all need to come together to make Delhi greener and cleaner. This is not just about planting trees but about laying the foundation of a healthy and beautiful Delhi for future generations.'

Traffic and potholes on Kaniyampuzha-Eroor road in Tripunithura trouble commuters
KOCHI: Traffic congestion and poor road conditions continue to haunt residents along the Kaniyampuzha-Eroor road stretch in Tripunithura. While the state government had sanctioned a Rs 10-crore renovation project, it remains on paper. The Kaniyampuzha road that runs from Vyttila Mobility Hub to Eroor is a major shortcut that commuters use to access the Infopark, Kakkanad, and other regions to escape the city traffic. However, for the past few years, the road itself has become a reason for the traffic bottleneck in the region. The road, under the Public Works Department, was built in 1994 and the renovation project initiated by the previous LDF government came to a standstill after the survey. 'The road is extremely narrow and a specific stretch of about 150m is difficult to traverse. Two vehicles cannot pass through the road without rubbing against each other,' said Kannan M S, a member of Kaniyampuzha Vikasana Samithi. 'Almost all vehicles avoid the road due to the major inconvenience caused to the residents. Commuters unfamiliar with the road's condition often get caught in hours-long traffic blocks in the area,' he said. Adding to the woes, a drainage work under PWD has been stopped abruptly at a very narrow stretch on the road, leading to heavy waterlogging in the region during rain. 'The drainage that was built four years ago ends in the middle of the road. Now, wastewater puddles up in the road, making it impossible to walk on the road. It has also damaged the pathway further and bikers accidently falling into potholes under the water has become common now,' said councillor Shonima Naveen. 'We have been constantly pressing the authorities to take immediate action. However, they said that the amount allotted will not be enough for completing all the work here,' she said.
