Actress Eleanor Lee wins lawsuit against former assistant who doctored her audio recording
The 25-year-old daughter of Taiwan-born Singapore host Quan Yifeng was in the news in May for allegedly making derogatory comments about the people of China, which she denied.
On May 21, a netizen claiming to be her former assistant posted an apology on Chinese social media platform Weibo and admitted to posting the edited recording.
On July 29, Lee's agency wrote on Weibo that it had received the Chinese court's Certificate of Judgment Enforcement, and attached the document.
'Eleanor Lee has always loved and respected Chinese culture and stood firm in her position,' the agency wrote. 'We firmly defend her legal rights and urge everyone to refrain from believing or spreading rumours, to jointly resist false information and build a clean cyberspace.'
The agency also shared a post from Yang Shuguang, a senior partner from Hai Run Law Firm, who shared a legal statement on the progress of the case.
The statement said the court had issued a ruling on June 23, with the ruling taking effect on July 17. It also noted that the false content posted online by the former assistant had damaged Lee's reputation, causing her mental distress and affecting her business activities.
'The court ordered the defendant to run a statement of apology to Eleanor Lee on the defendant's Weibo account for 60 consecutive days, and to pay damages to her for mental stress, legal costs and other financial losses,' said the statement.
It also said the legal firm has identified several social media accounts which maliciously fabricated and spread false information, and stated that it will continue to monitor these users.
'If the relevant network users still fail to promptly delete the infringing content they have posted after the release of this statement, or continue to commit the infringing acts, our lawyers will promptly collect additional evidence and file a lawsuit in court with the client's authorisation.'
The furore began when a netizen claiming to be Lee's former assistant released a poor-quality audio recording that lasted about 30 seconds on Weibo in April.
In the recording, which features much background noise and some muffled words, a woman is heard saying she is 'doing this not for fame, but for money' and that 'most people in China are idiots'.
The incident gained traction after the media in China and Taiwan reported on it in May.
Lee has not updated her social media accounts since posting a video clip on May 21, in which she gave her side of the story.
There is no word if her role in the upcoming Chinese period drama, The Journey Of Legend, will be affected by the saga.
Shi Hang Law Firm, which is representing the producers of the show, said in a statement posted on Weibo on July 29 that it is planning to take legal action against certain online users who have been spreading false information and continuously posting defamatory content about the series. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

Over 1,400 Singapore vehicles fined for missing VEP RFID tags [WATCH]
JOHOR BARU: A total of 1,489 summonses have been issued by the Road Transport Department (RTD) against Singapore-registered vehicles found without the installation and activation of the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) RFID tag. The summonses were issued between July 1 and yesterday as part of the department's VEP Enforcement Operation targeting foreign vehicles from Singapore at the Malaysia-Singapore land border. According to RTD senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan, the total value of summonses collected during the month-long operation has reached RM445,800. He said 14,379 Singaporean vehicles had been inspected outside both Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complexes – Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) – as well as throughout the district. "Just tonight, 15 summonses were issued to Singaporean vehicles entering Malaysia without the required VEP RFID tag installed and activated. "So far, among the 1,489 vehicle owners or drivers summoned, most have given a similar excuse — that they were unaware the Malaysian government had begun enforcement, mistakenly believing we were still in the advocacy phase. "But that is no longer the case. We are taking firm action with zero tolerance. No more warnings — summonses are issued immediately, and offenders are required to settle them on the spot," he said. Muhammad Kifli made the remarks at a press conference during a vehicle inspection under the VEP Enforcement Operation at the BSI exit ramp last night. He added that nearly 90 per cent of privately registered Singapore vehicles have already obtained and activated their VEP RFID tags. As of July 31, RTD had issued a total of 277,930 VEP RFID tags to vehicle owners in Singapore, covering both privately owned and company vehicles. "From our observations, most Singapore-registered vehicles leaving Johor Baru already have active VEP RFID tags. However, within certain areas in the district, there are still vehicles that have not been registered. "Once a summons is issued, most comply by immediately installing and activating their VEP. "Of all those summoned, only one individual initially refused to cooperate, but when we moved to seize the vehicle, they eventually complied, paid the summons, and proceeded to register their VEP," he explained. Muhammad Kifli confirmed that enforcement operations would continue until further notice. "We will continue to inspect Singaporean vehicles at key locations frequented by Singaporeans. "Therefore, we urge all foreign vehicle owners to register, install and activate their VEP RFID tags without delay to avoid any inconvenience when entering or exiting Malaysia. "It is an offence to drive a foreign-registered vehicle into or within Malaysia without a valid permit, under Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum fine of RM300," he added. On June 4, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook announced that full enforcement of the VEP at the Malaysia-Singapore land border would begin on July 1.
