I bought a dated caravan for £4.5k & turned it into my family's very own second home – now we holiday for just £10 a day
Now Jade Aldred and Joe Earl, both 25, have their very own second home and are able to go on holiday for just £10 a day.

After a nightmare trip with their pals, the couple, who live in Gateshead, decided to invest in a caravan.
They searched high and low for a home on wheels without damp and eventually found Elvis - their 21-year-old caravan which they bought for £4,500.
Now, DIY fan Jade reveals all on the caravan's transformation process, as well as the negativity she has received for owning one.
Jade exclusively tells Fabulous: 'We hunted high and low for a caravan with no damp and Elvis was the only one that ticked all the boxes. It was at that moment, we knew Elvis definitely wasn't dead!
'It was very dated and needed some TLC, but we knew he had amazing potential.'
The couple were inspired to buy a caravan after not being able to afford the trip their mates had booked.
Jade says: 'They asked us to go away for a weekend to a caravan site and instead of missing out, we put a blow up bed in the back of Joe's van and went.
'We were absolutely freezing through the night and both woke up with a cold. All of our friends had their central heating on and cooked Full English breakfasts. It was like home from home and we instantly knew we wanted a caravan after that.'
But despite their desire to buy a caravan, Jade and Joe were in the process of saving to buy their first home, so didn't have loads of extra cash to splash.
But they also knew their mortgage would make holidaying difficult - whereas with a caravan they 'could still go on holiday without the extreme prices.'
I bought a £26k caravan, trolls say it's a mistake but my bank account disagrees
As a result, the couple bought their home on wheels, which has a fixed bed, kitchen, shower and toilet, from a private seller in Whitley Bay.
It cost them a total of £4,500, which included the awning and extras.
Renovating on a budget
But the caravan, which is nearly as old as Jade, was in need of an upgrade, so they headed to B&Q and IKEA, and ordered bargain buys from eBay and Shein, to transform it whilst staying on a budget.
Jade shares: 'We took the old carpet up and replaced it with Herringbone flooring from B&Q.
'We replaced the old kitchen bench top with an off-cut that Joe had spare from work.
'We bought adhesive wall tiles from Create Your World for £30 - this really transformed the kitchen area.

'We took all of the cupboard doors off, sanded them all and replaced the middles with rattan from Shein. The rattan was £30 in total.
'We did all of the cupboards and the fridge and had a lot of spare material left over.
'I upholstered the sofa cushions myself - I bought the Tiphede rugs from IKEA for £10 each and I used seven in total for all the sofa cushions and the window pelmet.
'I used a 14" upholstery needle from eBay for £6.99 and also buttons from eBay for £26.
'I watched endless tutorials on how to do it and they turned out really good and don't look any different since I did them.'
Reflecting on their caravan's new gorgeous look, Jade beams: 'Since the renovation, Elvis is now very stylish, homely and cosy with such a warm feel.
'It really is a mini home on wheels. Elvis has everything you need and the best part is your own bedding.'
'Young to own a caravan'
But while Jade loves her cosy abode, she confesses that some people have been very vocal with their judgemental opinions.
'When people say 'you're young to have a caravan', it makes me feel old and boring but a lot of my friends hire caravans for weekends away and would love to buy one if they could.
Why caravan holidays are so underrated
CARAVAN park holidays are a British staple.
And with the cost of living crisis wreaking havoc on Britain's purses, more of us are turning to them for an affordable break.
Josie O'Brien, Senior Digital Writer on Fabulous, weighs in on why she thinks caravan holidays are seriously underrated...
WHEN I was a child, my mum used to collect the £9.50 holiday vouchers in The Sun.
She'd use them to book a couple of nights away at a caravan park during the school holidays.
As an adult, I fully appreciate the convenience of a humble caravan holiday.
No faffing about with passports, no luggage limits and no bog-standard hotel breakfast of stale toast and grey eggs.
I still love caravan holidays as an adult.
In a world of doing everything for the 'gram, a caravan park brings you back to basics.
There's no obligation to get dressed up, no stress to fit a million picturesque excursions in one week and I don't find myself flustered in tourist hot spots like abroad.
I love going to coastal caravan parks and strolling along the beach parade.
My highlight is always fresh mussels, ice-creams and classic pubs to grab an afternoon tipple in.
And then, of course, there's the cost.
Staying in a caravan is definitely way cheaper than my international trips.
With no expensive hotel bills and the ability to cook my own meals, I'm spending hundreds less than I would abroad.
I've had some of my best and most relaxing holidays in caravans. Maybe I'll buy my own one day.
'I think a lot of people associate having a caravan with the older generation [but] I think it's getting more and more popular with younger people having caravans and motorhomes,' Jade reflects.
And not only do Jade and Jo travel around in their caravan, but it's great for the rest of their family too, as Jade acknowledges: 'I have taken my siblings on many trips away and they love it.
'We have had so many amazing times away with family and friends and made amazing memories and new friends for life.'
Cutting costs on holidays
Now, Jade and her family are able to go to campsites for just £10 a night, significantly reducing the cost of their holidays.
The homeowner, who is also currently renovating her detached three-bedroom home alongside Joe, admits: 'We often do weekends away in the caravan and have a 'No Spend Weekend'. You can do it cheaply if you want to.
'I always cook like I would at home - we have all the facilities, gas hob, grill, oven, air fryer etc.
'We go on long walks and take picnics, take our own alcohol and drinks. It's so easy going and chilled. You can come and go as you please.'
So far, the couple have been to numerous caravan sites and have taken trips to Morpeth, the Lake District, Keswick, Harrogate, York, Belford and Richmond (with a cheeky trip to the Forbidden Corner).
And for those wondering whether caravan life is for them, Jade, who shares clips of her caravan on social media under the username @ thatmeadowreno, gushes: 'I definitely think if you are trying to save money and still want to go on holiday, owning a caravan is a great way to do it.
'You can see many places and have the best time with your family and friends for a very little price.
'It's a great idea if you want to get away with pets, it means they don't have to miss out on the fun too!'

Airline star Jane Boulton in embarrassing blunder as she misses her flight – years after scolding late passengers
STAR of iconic hit TV show Airline, Jane Boulton, has been left red-faced after making a huge blunder. The TV personality, who found fame appearing on the ITV series, famously quipped to passengers it was "easy if you get here on time" but has now found herself missing her first ever flight over her own lateness. 5 5 Jane, whose episodes of Airline went viral last year and in 2023, took to her TikTok account to discuss how she had been unable to board her flight as planned after being too late to the airport to be checked in. Revealing that she was due to head to Gatwick Airport after attending a podcast recording, Jane found herself stuck in traffic that prevented her from arriving on time. Appearing that karma was out to get her, she said to the camera: "Came to for an interview with Lewis Nicholls yesterday and, guess what guys, for the first time in my life it was not easy because I did not get there on time. "We got stuck in the most horrific traffic on the way to Gatwick, there was an accident and literally we came off the motorway to queue up for the Gatwick turn off and it took us probably an hour to get from there." In a bitter blow, Jane was just ONE minute late to the check-in desk. And despite being Britain's most well-known check-in lady, her celebrity status and previous credentials did not help her as she was still denied the chance to board the plane after asking very nicely. Jane continued: "We missed the check-in by how long? One minute. And as nice as I was... but no, she wasn't having any of it. "So we missed our little flight with Eastern Airways and had to book on a train, so we should have arrived here at 10 yesterday morning and we got here at about four, three o'clock. "So I know how people feel now, and I can honestly say a lot of people out there are probably thinking 'karma'." Jane was based at Luton Airport working for EasyJet on their check-in desk and became a hit with reality TV fans thanks to her no-nonsense attitude. She often clashed with unruly customers and was never afraid to put them in their place. Her fans were quick to make light of the situation as they quoted many of Jane's viral catchphrases that she often used on late passengers on the show, back to her. One wrote on the post: "Well I'm sorry but a coffee shop does not look like departures (love you Jane)." Another added: "Jane, it's a plane not a bus, much love as always though." 5 5 As a third said: "It is easy if you get here on time as Jane Boulton once told a customer." Jane ceased working in the airline industry in 2014 and shortly after began running her own business, Party Paradise UK. She found herself thrust back into the spotlight when Airline found a new lease of life via TikTok with various clips and episodes going viral - 20 years after they were first aired. It saw Jane make a return to mainstream fame in 2023 and she has since built up an impressive online following. She has appeared on This Morning and various podcasts reflecting about her time on the show. Jane has also become a favourite for brand partnerships and has raked in the cash working with a whole host of companies. One full circle moment saw Jane collaborate with EasyJet as a brand ambassador for a series of viral video clips last year. 5

Jet2 profits prepare to take off on summer holiday boom
Travel group Jet2 is due to see its profits surge thanks to Britons shrugging off cost-of-living concerns and jetting off for holidays. Britain's largest package holiday operator is set to report an annual profit of £579 million when it delivers its results on Wednesday, a 9 per cent rise on the previous year. Sales are also expected to have soared by £1 billion to £7.2 billion in the 12 months to March, according to analysts' forecasts. The profit is slightly above the £570 million that the company predicted in a trading update in April when it flagged that demand for its summer holidays had boomed earlier in the year, with the firm increasing the number of seats on its planes by more than 8 per cent. It provided relief to investors after its boss, Steve Heapy, warned in February that the cost-of-living crisis could hit profits as consumers cut back on getaways. Jet2 is the largest company on the London Stock Exchange's junior AIM market, with a value of nearly £3.8 billion. Its value has surged since the pandemic, with the share price more than doubling in the past five years as it managed to emerge from the Covid-19 lockdowns less scarred than many of its competitors. It allowed the company to leapfrog rivals such as Tui and On The Beach to become the UK's largest tour operator. Despite initial fears that consumers would sacrifice holidays as the cost of living rose, the opposite appears to have been the case, with many households ring-fencing their getaway budgets. In its half-year results in May, On The Beach said it was expecting a record summer season as Britons prioritised spending on travel, particularly city and beach breaks to countries such as Spain. And last month Heathrow airport increased its profit forecasts for 2025, citing better-than-expected demand for long-haul flights despite fears that turmoil in the Middle East and US President Donald Trump's tariff and border policies would put people off travelling.

I visited the English holiday park with a private beach and indoor pool – it felt more like the Algarve
WITH a glass of wine in hand, watching the sun set over the sea as clear waters lap the shore, I could have been in the Algarve. But no, rather than basking in Portugal, I was holidaying with the family at a caravan park on east Devon's Jurassic Coast. 3 3 Perched on a clifftop, Ladram Bay Holiday Park was our escape for the weekend — and the place certainly exceeded every expectation. The award-winning, family-owned site has 140 caravans, 11 lodges, three apartments, safari tents and glamping pods and — where we stayed — one recently renovated former fisherman's cottage. We arrived on a Friday, kicking off our shoes and running down the winding footpath to the beach. Ladram overlooks a gorgeous section of the coast and even has its own private beach — accessible only to guests, via a slipway at the bottom of the park. By 4pm on the Friday we were happily splashing about in the sea, building sandcastles with our toddler and cracking open a beer. Splash park It's how I wish most weekends could start, to be honest. And the weekend only gets better from here. We then spend the evening enjoying a delicious feast at the site's main restaurant, Pebbles, which caters for young and old alike with an extensive menu. My partner reckoned his 8oz Devon sirloin steak and chips, for £22.50, was among the best he's ever tasted — while I found the House Bay Burger, £16.95, delicious. Even better when washed down with a mojito — one of the many cocktails to choose from. Martin Lewis warns about strict passport rule that could see you board your flight - only to get sent home on arrival The next day, we sampled some of the local attractions. Crealy Theme Park is a mere 20 minutes away for those seeking family fun. Or a short drive along the coast can take you to Sidmouth, Budleigh, Salterton and Exmouth — the latter boasting a huge sandy beach and traditional seaside attractions. We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed sunshine for our entire stay, but Ladram also caters for those rainy days. The indoor pool is magnificent — one of the cleanest I've ever known — and offers free family playtimes as well as exercise classes. The adjoining outdoor splash park is brilliant, too, for cooling off on a hot day, while the indoor fun slide kept us all entertained — even the grandparents. 3 As well as an on-site gym, huge outdoor adventure playground, indoor soft-play centre and enormous amusement arcade, the park also boasts pottery and art classes in its new studio. And it has its own nine-hole mini- golf course. And all that's before you even start on the evening entertainment in Waves Bar — with bingo, a pool table, darts, kids' disco, singers and the Ladram Stars Showtime. We stayed for the weekend but could have spent a whole week and still not have been bored. The accommodation was immaculately kept and the wide range of caravans and lodges means there's something for every family's size and price point. Our cottage was decked out with everything you could possibly need — a fully equipped kitchen, bathrooms well-stocked with indulgent Bramley toiletries, logs for the fire and even a welcome hamper full of treats. I had scouted out nearby supermarkets in advance, to stock us up for the weekend. But I needn't have worried. The on-site shop Ladram Stores stocks everything from freshly baked goods to beachwear and wine. You could visit for the week and not have any need to leave. Enjoy a fresh breakfast at the on-site Beach Shack cafe overlooking the sea, or kick back and cool off with an afternoon drink and ice-cream. If you fancy fish and chips, you can order in advance via Ladram's snazzy app and go and collect it from the on-site chippy, Coast Takeaway, at your desired time. Ladram is not like other holiday parks, it's practically a village. And you can tell every member of staff really cares. The site caters particularly well for kids — with the fabulous amenities on offer including a huge outdoor adventure playground. Our toddler was able to join in with everything. We could hear the waves lapping the shore from our cottage — a literal stone's throw to the beach. And when we visited Portugal just a few weeks later, I looked out at the coastline, from our accommodation, and realised it didn't look too different at all from that special view back at Ladram.
