South Nashville road shrinking to 1 lane in each direction for NDOT study

Yahoo3 days ago
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Changes are coming to one of Nashville's busiest roads — but only temporarily.
Starting this week, East Thompson Lane will look a lot different as part of a city test to make streets safer.

'A lot of people say East Thompson Lane is known for speeders,' South Nashville resident Sarah Tolentino said.
'It's really not safe for people to get from the neighborhoods to the park, to the grocery store and things without a car,' District 16 Council Member Ginny Welsch explained.
Right now, East Thompson Lane has two lanes in each direction, but that's about to change temporarily.
Starting Thursday, it'll be one lane each way to make room for a protected lane for walkers and bikers. For five days, from Thursday to Monday, NDOT will be testing a new layout along East Thompson Lane.
The goal is to create a safer space for people without the cost of building new sidewalks.
NDOT told that adding sidewalks would be too expensive, so this temporary design will help them determine if fewer traffic lanes could work.
'It will improve safety and add more mobility options,' NDOT Walking and Biking Manager Anna Dearman explained.

The demonstration is partly in response to serious crashes.
NDOT reported that from 2019 to 2023, eight people were killed on this stretch: four pedestrians and four drivers. But those numbers continued to rise.
'In June 2024, we saw another pedestrian fatality, and then in June 2025, we saw another driver fatality, so that number has gone up to 10,' Dearman said.
To test out the study, a community bike ride is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. from Whitsett Park.
But not everyone is on board.
Tolentino told News 2 she is worried about traffic delays and questions whether pedestrian paths are even needed, especially with a busy train track already slowing things down.
'In the last 20 years that we have lived here, I can think of maybe 12 cases that I have seen bikes go up and down that street,' Tolentino said.
'When the train hits, and it is going to be one lane in both directions, it is going to be all the way to Murfreesboro Road on one end and to Thompson Lane on the other,' Tolentino explained. 'So I cannot imagine all the difficulties of having to wait for traffic to settle down.'

NDOT will be collecting public feedback. If this trial goes well, construction on a permanent version could start in 2026.
'This is just to give people a taste of this is what we can do. We are looking for measures to make this safer, to make it more pedestrian friendly,' Welsch concluded.

On 40th anniversary of ‘Back to the Future,' Allstate celebrates its role in creation of DeLorean time machine

On the 40th anniversary of the 'Back to the Future' movie premiere, Northbrook-based insurance giant Allstate is traveling back to the past to reveal its little-known role in developing the DeLorean, the futuristic but short-lived, gull-winged, stainless steel car that served as Doc Brown's time machine. Without Allstate, Marty McFly might never have left 1985 or perhaps he would have traveled back in time in a Buick, forever disrupting the space-time continuum of the seminal movie trilogy. 'The cars exist because of the partnership Allstate had with DeLorean,' said Sandee Lindorfer, vice president of auto claims for Allstate. In the words of Doc Brown, 'Great Scott!' 'Back to the Future' hit movie theaters on July 3, 1985. A customized 1981 DeLorean DMC-12, which took audiences on joyrides to 1955, 1885 and 2015 over the course of three films, was already relegated to the junkyard of automotive history by the time the movie premiered. In the mid-1970s, Allstate worked with John DeLorean, an automobile executive and engineer, who left GM to launch his own namesake vehicle. The insurance company invested a reported $500,000 in a safety car project, developing prototypes with advanced seatbelt restraints, airbags and improved bumpers. 'We sponsored three prototypes with the DeLorean-Allstate safety car agreement, and we brought one of the prototypes to Congress to show them what could be done around smaller vehicles being more safe and having better fuel economy,' Lindorfer said. One prototype evolved into the sleek DeLorean DMC-12, which went into limited but ill-timed production at a Northern Ireland factory during a recession in 1981, generating buzz but few sales. By 1982, the debt-ridden company was in bankruptcy and its founder in legal trouble, facing indictments on separate drug and fraud charges. John DeLorean was ultimately acquitted on both counts, but his car was seemingly no more than a flash in the pan. Three years later, the DeLorean was reborn as Doc Brown's time machine, and the rest is cinematic history. Initially, the time machine was envisioned as a refrigerator-like chamber that Doc Brown carried on the back of his truck. Then director Robert Zemeckis had the inspiration that the time machine should be mobile, and specifically chose the DeLorean for its futuristic design. 'The way I see it, if you're going to build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?' Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, explains in the movie. In the annals of 'Back to the Future' lore, a lot of similar nuggets have emerged since the film trilogy premiered. For example, the 1989 second installment predicted the Cubs would finally end their century-long World Series drought with a 2015 win over the fictional Miami Gators. The Cubs actually broke through in 2016, beating the Cleveland Indians, but the movie was pretty close. Also, the role of Marty McFly was initially given to Eric Stoltz, who participated in over a month of filming before he was replaced by Michael J. Fox, the more comedically gifted 'Family Ties' star. But Allstate's role in developing the car that begot the time machine and an enduring movie star remained buried in a dusty folder in the back of a corporate cabinet for decades. In 2019, an Allstate archivist found the mysterious DeLorean file and began exploring the mostly forgotten connection. Six years later, on the 40th anniversary of 'Back to the Future,' Allstate is finally ready to take a modest bow. On Tuesday, Allstate rented a pair of vintage DeLoreans to celebrate the movie, the car and the unlikely part the insurance company played in both. Tucked away in the back of an underground garage at Allstate's downsized Northbrook/Glenview headquarters, across the street from its former sprawling corporate campus, the vehicles were briefly on display for the media and a handful of executives. The cars, which included a stock 1981 DeLorean and a tricked-out version replicating the 'Back to the Future' time machine, were rented from an Orland Park company — DeLorean USA Rental — that leases the vehicles for parties and events. 'You can't drive it because the insurer doesn't allow it,' said Tom Sedor, who owns the cars and the rental company. The time machine, which includes a flux capacitor and a Mr. Fusion nuclear reactor in the back — replete with banana peel as fuel — is fully drivable, and the garage and adjacent parking lot offered enough room to get it up to the 88 mph threshold required to go back to the future. But Sedor, 57, who customized the movie mockup with a 3D printer and assorted parts from Menards and RockAuto, said the replica has yet to successfully make the time jump. 'Nothing happened, no sparks,' said Sedor. 'Everything drove normally. Actually, it's very, very impressive to drive.' rchannick@

This Is The Highest HP Engine Ever Put In A Ford Mustang From The Factory

When one considers the haste with which the original 1964.5 Ford Mustang was cobbled together from the boxy Ford Falcon, its status as an automotive icon is even more impressive. That's not to say that there weren't some rough patches, though, like the Pinto-based Mustang II that occupied the Malaise-era 1970s. Initially, the Mustang II wasn't available with any V8 power, period. When Ford corrected their grievous error the following year, it was in the form of an optional 302 cubic inch (5.0-liter in metric terms) V8 that made a pathetic 140 horsepower. Paraphrasing Jeremy Clarkson, how do they get so little power out of such a (relatively) large engine? At the other end of the spectrum, what's the most horsepower that the blue oval brand has ever stuffed under the hood of its pony car? Of course, it's the Nürburgring-crushing 2025 Ford Mustang GTD. Gearheads first became aware of these, 815 horsepower supercharged beast back in 2023, and it appears that lucky owners will finally begin taking delivery soon. The bad news is that due to a recently leaked window sticker, we now know that the GTD's base price is $327,960 which includes a mandatory $5,500 delivery fee and $3,700 in gas guzzler tax. Prior to the top-dog Mustang GTD, high-horsepower honors went to the 2020 through 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. Like the GTD, this machine also packs a 5.2-liter supercharged Predator V8, but in the GT500, it "only" made 760 horsepower. Read more: These V6 Engines Put The LS1 V8 To Shame When discussing rambunctious 'Stangs, we'd be remiss in not mentioning that tuners like Saleen and Shelby have also created some outrageously powerful pony cars. For example, Saleen's 2024 302 Mustang Black Label makes 800 horsepower from a supercharged and heavily-modified 5.0-liter base motor. Its MSRP of $108,990 isn't exactly cheap, but it is about 1/3 the price of a new Mustang GTD. That said, you'll have to stretch your definition of "factory Mustang" considerably to include the Saleen. That's because the company acquires stock Mustangs from the Ford assembly line, which Saleen later modifies in-house for resale. If we're going to allow a Saleen product in this article, then we've also got to throw a mention to the bonkers 2013 through 2014 Ford Shelby 1000 S/C. In its top form, which includes a humungous 3.6-liter supercharger, the Shelby 1000 is said to crank out more than 1,200 horsepower. That's more than the final Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 or the C8 Corvette ZR1, not to mention that this feat was accomplished over 10 years ago. Reportedly, the most powerful Shelby 1000 was track-only and not intended to be street driven. Still, we'd bet you could get away with it in a state without strict emissions or safety inspections. Why Lucid (LCID) Stock Is Up Today

Shares of luxury electric car manufacturer Lucid (NASDAQ:LCID) jumped 7.1% in the afternoon session after the company announced a 38% year-over-year increase in second-quarter deliveries, though the figures fell short of analyst expectations. Lucid announced it delivered 3,309 vehicles in the second quarter, a significant jump from the 2,394 vehicles delivered in the same period last year. However, this number missed the consensus estimate of 3,611 vehicles from Wall Street analysts. The company also reported producing 3,863 vehicles during the quarter. For the first half of 2025, Lucid produced 6,075 vehicles and delivered 6,418, indicating it has been selling down previously built inventory. Investors are reacting positively to the strong year-over-year growth, even with the delivery miss. The report comes as competitors like Tesla and Rivian posted year-over-year declines in their Q2 deliveries. Lucid is scheduled to report its full second-quarter financial results on August 5, 2025. Is now the time to buy Lucid? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. Lucid's shares are extremely volatile and have had 58 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. Lucid is down 28.5% since the beginning of the year, and at $2.17 per share, it is trading 49.2% below its 52-week high of $4.26 from August 2024. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Lucid's shares at the IPO in September 2020 would now be looking at an investment worth $218.91.
