SPFL hammer Hamilton Accies with a season-long transfer embargo
It's more bad news for the struggling Lanarkshire side Hamilton Accies have been hit with a season-long transfer embargo and £7,500 fine, the SPFL has announced. The Lanarkshire side, who were docked 15 points and fined £9,000 in May for breaching multiple SPFL rules, were releagted from the Championship last season and their woes have been compounded by today's news the club has been banned from signing players after the club admitted to three counts of failing to notify the SPFL it had been in default of its tax obligations to HMRC. John Rankin's side have been fielding some players as trialists, including Ricki Lamie and Charlie Telfer, in the Premier Sports Cup matches this month and the Accies gaffer said last week he hoped the ban would be lifted in time for them to sign for the new League One season starting on August 2. However, the club's hopes of winning the League One title have been dealt a huge blow by the news they will be unable to strengthen the squad in this window and the January 2026 transfer window. A statement from the SPFL read: "The SPFL can today confirm that an independent disciplinary tribunal has imposed a season-long transfer embargo on Hamilton Academical FC. "The William Hill League 1 club was already subject to a transfer embargo following remuneration and tax defaults which were determined or admitted during season 2024/25. "Any SPFL club that fails to settle its tax obligations or pay its players on time is subject to an automatic transfer embargo under SPFL Rules. "At a hearing which took place on Thursday 24 July, Hamilton Academical FC admitted to further breaches of SPFL Rules by failing to settle its tax obligations to HMRC on three occasions, and for failing to notify the SPFL that it had been in default of its tax obligations to HMRC on each occasion, as required by SPFL Rules. "Following these latest admitted breaches by the club, an independent disciplinary tribunal imposed the following sanctions: • a transfer embargo which will remain in place until the opening of the registration window, which follows the end of season 2025/26; and • A fine of £7,500 - £5,000 of which is suspended."

Luton defender Odoffin out after minor surgery
Luton Town defender Hakeem Odoffin requires minor surgery and will be out of action for an unspecified period, the club has 27-year-old signed for the Hatters in early July and the club say an MRI scan in his medical flagged "an unexpected non-musculoskeletal issue".Manager Matt Bloomfield told the club website, external they were aware of the issue before signing Odoffin. "We were in a position to make the decision where either we support him through this, knowing that we've got a real good person, a real good character and a real good player – or we walk away from it," Bloomfield added."Hakeem is someone the recruitment department at the football club had kept a really close eye on before I was here, someone who I know extremely well from playing against him, so all things aligned and we believe it's still the right decision."Odoffin, who left Rotherham United in May, said he hopes to be back playing soon."Unfortunately, it does require surgery to correct the issue and ensure I can return to playing safely," he said."I'll be sidelined for a little while, but I'm fully focused on my recovery and will be working hard to get back to training with the lads as soon as possible."Relegated Luton begin their League One campaign at home to AFC Wimbledon on Friday, 1 August (20:00 BST).
