Ammonia leak at Mahananda Dairy in Mumbai triggers multi-agency response; no injuries reported

According to civic officials ammonia began leaking from a tank with a capacity of 3,000 kilograms, located inside a ground-floor refrigeration unit spanning approximately 2,000 sq. ft. The leakage was traced to a faulty valve.
As a precautionary measure, the plant's electrical supply was disconnected by the dairy's in-house electrician. Teams from the Mumbai fire brigade, Police, HAZMAT unit, 108 Ambulance services, and ward staff were immediately mobilized.
HAZMAT is a specialized unit trained to handle dangerous substances like toxic chemicals, gases, biological agents, or radioactive materials.
Emergency responders equipped with 25 breathing apparatus (BA) kits shut off 15 to 16 valves to prevent further leakage. Simultaneously, personnel in chemical suits from the HAZMAT unit worked to stop the leak directly at the faulty valve. Sealant from Hazmat vehicles was used to plug the leak.
To neutralize the escaping ammonia, fire officials deployed three high-pressure first aid lines and a small hose line connected to a four-motor pump. Around 15–20 kg of residual ammonia gas, mixed with Prizol 68 lubricant oil, was safely transferred to another reservoir tank.
The area was cordoned off as a safety measure to avoid exposure. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Further investigation is underway to determine the cause of the valve failure and assess any long-term risks associated with the leak.

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday allowed a Malad-based doctor to terminate a minor's 13-week pregnancy without disclosing her identity and ordered the Director General of Police, Maharashtra to instruct all police stations across the state to not compel doctors reveal the identities of pregnant minors who approach them for medical termination of their unwanted pregnancies. Datar was approached by the parents of the minor girl on July 23, after she missed her periods and a home test confirmed that she was pregnant. The parents did not wish to report the boy since the adolescents were in a consensual relationship and had sworn an affidavit to the effect. As the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act punishes non-reporting of alleged crimes, Datar called the police helpline number and informed them about the minor girl and her parents. Subsequently, three constables visited his hospital and demanded details of the minor. The doctor also received a letter from the Malad police station setting out details of police personnels' visit to his hospital and demanding full details of the girl, her parents and the documents pertaining to their hospital visit. Datar approached the high court claiming that compelling registered medical practitioners to disclose names of minors seeking medical termination of their pregnancy when they themselves do not wish to disclose their identity leads them to unsafe methods of abortion. The court, while allowing the doctor to carry out the procedure, directed that the forensic evidence of the fetus be collected and stored by the doctor only if so consented by the minor and her parents, to be transmitted to the police officer concerned in case any criminal prosecution is launched hereafter. The judges were surprised to note that despite the clear finding recorded by the Supreme Court, repeatedly holding that doctors shall not be compelled to reveal the identity of minors seeking medical termination of pregnancy, the police in Maharashtra were insisting on details of such minor girls from doctors, forcing the latter to approach the high court. 'This is nothing but harassment of doctors as well as the minors,' the bench said, directing the DGP to issue a circular to all police stations, apprising officers about the law laid down by the Supreme Court.

Third edition of ‘Run for SMA' to be held on August 10 at Gachibowli Stadium
The third edition of Run for SMA will be organised by the Cure SMA Foundation of India at Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad on August 10. The event is part of the global Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month observed in August. A press conference announcing the event was held at the Cyberabad Commissioner's office, with Commissioner of Police Avinash Mohanty unveiling the poster and extending his support to the awareness initiative. He said that while SMA treatment is important, prevention through awareness and early screening is even more critical. He appreciated the SCSC Health Forum for organising the event and noted that such efforts are essential, especially since treatment is expensive. Srilakshmi Nalam, Co-founder and Trustee of Cure SMA India, said there is a need for collaboration between doctors, research bodies, companies and the government to build a support system for families.
