2012 Dalit Trader Assault Case: Ayodhya SC/ST court orders arrest of 10 cops
The court has directed the inspector general (IG) of Ayodhya to ensure the arrest of all accused and produce them before the court on June 20, 2025.
According to the case details, the incident occurred on August 21, 2012, when Rajkumar Sonkar, a local trader, was allegedly detained and assaulted by policemen inside a police station. The victim has claimed that he was forced to provide food items free of cost for a police function. Upon refusal, he was allegedly beaten, and his gold chain and ₹25,000 in cash were taken.
Speaking to reporters, Martand Pratap Singh, counsel for Sonkar, said, 'My client was forcibly taken to the police station, brutally assaulted and looted by the policemen on duty. Despite repeated court orders, no action was taken.'
Sonkar later filed a complaint in the SC/ST court, which has since issued multiple warrants over the years. Despite this, no arrests were carried out. The accused policemen had moved the Allahabad high court seeking relief, but their petition was dismissed, and they were instructed to surrender within three weeks. However, they reportedly ignored the directive.
With no compliance, the SC/ST court has now taken stringent action by issuing fresh NBWs and ordering top-level police authorities to implement the order.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for June 20, 2025.

Murder charges framed against 6 in Panchkula triple murder
The court of additional sessions judge in Panchkula on Tuesday framed charges against six accused in the triple murder case that occurred in Burj Kotian, near Pinjore, on December 23, 2024. The victims included one woman, identified as Vandana alias Nia, 22, from Jind, Vinit Gehlot alias Vicky Mitrau, 29 and his 17-year-old nephew, both from Najafgarh, Delhi. Police also said that one more accused has been taken on a production warrant in this case, though charges are yet to be filed against him. The trial is set to commence on September 1, with charges including murder, criminal conspiracy, organised crime, and Arms Act violations. The case follows a complaint filled by Ashish, a 34-year-old from Zirakpur resident. Ashish stated that on December 22, he and his friends were invited to Rohit's birthday party at a Sector-5 hotel in Zirakpur. The venue was later changed to Saltanat Hotel, Burj Kotian. Ashish along with his three friends, Sahil, Natasha, and Kashi joined Rohit and his other friends at the venue around 10.30 pm. Ashish said that the incident unfolded after a birthday party at Saltanat Hotel. As Vandana, Vinit, and his nephew were leaving around 2.40 am on December 23, 2024, two to three assailants opened fire on Vinit's car, discharging approximately 14 shots. Vandana sustained a chest wound, Vicky was shot by eight bullets, and his nephew with four bullets. Police had suspected a long-standing gang rivalry between Delhi's Manjeet Mahal Gang and Nandu Gang. Victim Vinit was a member of the Manjeet Mahal gang, and a history sheeter with cases including murder, robbery, and extortion. Shooters Sahil and Vijay are reportedly associated with the Nandu Gang. Later, the car used during the crime was recovered from Bathinda Railway Station. Initial police investigations revealed that Vicky has approximately five cases registered in Panchkula, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh, including charges of murder, Arms Act violations, robbery, and SC/ST Act. Vicky was allegedly associated with the Manjeet Mahal gang, active in UP, Haryana, and Delhi NCR. Police also said that one more accused has been taken on a production warrant in this case, though charges are yet to be filed against him.

TN 'honour killing: NGO demands CBI probe into murder
THOOTHUKUDI: Nearly 65 honour killing incidents have taken place in Tamil Nadu since 2017, and police secured conviction only in seven cases in the past 30 years, human rights activist Kathir, executive director of the NGO Evidence said on Tuesday. Speaking to TNIE after meeting the parents of C Kavin Selvaganesh, Kathir said the CBI must probe Kavin's death as both parents of the suspect are police personnel and the police department might influence the investigation by local police in their favour. "This is the first time a police parents and their son have been involved in a honour killing incident, which shows how deep rooted casteism is even in the digital era," he said. "As per provisions of SC/ST Act , the deputy commissioner of police and collector must visit the house of the caste-based murder victims. But two days have passed since Kavin's death, none of them has visited the family yet. Police must secure and record all evidence wanted by victim's kin that can lead to rendering justice to them," he said. Referring to documents available with human rights defenders, Kathir said at least 65 caste-killing incidents have taken place in Tamil Nadu since 2017, he said. Even though several high courts in the country have passed judgement in around 72 cases ruling that inter caste marriages are not against Hindu Marriage Act, the Tamil Nadu government is struggling to control caste pride and the honour killings, Kathir added.
