Soweto Derby Showdown: Kaizer Chiefs beat Orlando Pirates in the style game

The Citizen05-05-2025
Competition was stiff this weekend—not just between Soweto derby titans Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium—but also in the fashion arena.
As Pirates clinched a 2-1 win on the pitch, Chiefs arguably triumphed in the pre-match style war, turning heads and timelines with their chic new kit that had fans screaming 'Khosi 4 the drip!
The Soweto Derby always brings fireworks, but this past weekend's clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates offered more than just a thrilling 2-1 scoreline in favour of the Buccaneers—it sparked a fierce pre-match fashion face-off.
Kaizer Chiefs: Stylishly ahead of the game
While Pirates grabbed points, Chiefs may have scored off-field with the reveal of their ultra-stylish new pre-match kit.
Designed by Old School, the same team behind Springbok fan gear and Pirates' previous kits, the jersey drew rave reviews.
A clever blend of classic and current, the Amakhosi jersey features a knit collar, old gold tones, and options between a soft gold torso or a clean white version, creating a sleek, retro-modern feel.
Very 1960's classic chic
In a move that screamed 'heritage meets high fashion', Chiefs debuted the kit with a runway-worthy rollout. Legends Jabu Mahlangu (Pule) and Lucas Radebe, alongside style king DJ Oscar Mbo, fronted a polished photoshoot that wouldn't look out of place in any fashion magazine.
On match day, players strutted out in the new kit paired with chinos and matching sneakers. Was it a football match or a fashion week opener?
You decide.

Fans didn't just want the look—they were ready to buy it, wear it, and flaunt it. Chiefs didn't just cater; they captivated.

'Pirates look like the Proteas going for a test match, so KC takes this one, I'm afraid.' – @Official_Ziwe
While a few fans appreciated the creativity, others weren't feeling the vibe. Harshest of all?
'Pirates players look like patients at a Russian psychiatric hospital.' – @_chuptre
Ouch. Fashion risks are bold, but this one may need a post-match review.

The style saga isn't over.
This Saturday, Chiefs and Pirates will collide again at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in the Nedbank Cup Final.
With queues already snaking through malls and heading on to online stores in KwaZulu-Natal, fans aren't just gearing up for football; they're hunting down kits like limited-edition Jordans.
Will Old School drop a remix? Will Adidas and Pirates counter with a style rebound?

Soccer is more than 90 minutes. It's theatre, identity, and, yes, it's fashion.
Whether it's scoring goals or scoring outfits, Chiefs proved that sometimes, looking like champions matters just as much as winning like one.
This weekend? The scoreboard resets, but the style war rages on.
Let the best-dressed team win.

Sabalenka stands tall, Norrie survives to reach Wimbledon quarters

Image:Top seed Aryna Sabalenka reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals after a tough workout by a familiar opponent on Sunday, while it was a mixed day for Britain as Cameron Norrie was left as the last home hope standing after Sonay Kartal went out. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz was locked in tough late match with Russian 14th seed Andrey Rublev of Russia on Centre Court, with the Spaniard battling to remain on course for a third straight title at the All England Club. Sabalenka is eyeing her first title on the pristine lawns in London after missing last year's tournament with injury and the 2022 edition due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players, and the 27-year-old made a fast start against Elise Mertens. Sabalenka, who claimed doubles titles at the US Open and Australian Open partnering Mertens, was then put through the wringer before raising her level to prevail 6-4 7-6(4). The victory improved her win-loss record against Belgian Mertens to 11-2 and she said the growing adoration of the crowd made a big difference after fans were on the other side of the fence when she met Briton Emma Raducanu last time out. "With your support, everything is possible" 🥹 Aryna Sabalenka has her eyes firmly set on the Ladies' Singles Trophy as she advances to the quarter-finals at SW19 ➡️ #Wimbledon — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 6, 2025 'I definitely felt the support. It was so amazing playing and feeling the support. I didn't have to pretend that they were cheering for me because they were really cheering for me,' Belarusian Sabalenka said. 'What can be better than that? I really enjoyed it. I hope it can stay the same all the way, and they help me energy-wise to stay strong and to face all of the challenges.' Sabalenka's next big test will come from Laura Siegemund, who at 37 is the oldest woman left in the singles draw, and the plucky German swatted aside Argentine lucky loser Solana Sierra with a 6-3 6-2 victory in a rain-interrupted match. Sierra's fellow South American, Chilean Nicolas Jarry, fell by the wayside as he was beaten 6-3 7-6(4) 6-7(7) 6-7(5) 6-3 in a classic match under the roof on Court One by Norrie despite hitting 46 aces for a tournament-high tally of 111. Norrie, the 2022 semifinalist, will continue to fly the flag for Britain when he takes on Rublev or Alcaraz in the next round but it was the end of the road for Kartal, who crashed to a 7-6(3) 6-4 defeat by unseeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Just listen to the sound of No.1 Court erupt 😮‍💨 #Wimbledon — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 6, 2025 The big talking point in that match was the malfunction of the Electronic Line Calling system, which at one stage left the Russian former French Open runner-up seething after being robbed of a point at 4-4 in the opening set. 'We were waiting for a decision as the system was down, but I was expecting to hear if they said the ball was in or out,' she said. 'Instead they just said, replay the point. It was tricky especially as it was a very crucial moment in the match. 'I expected a different decision. I just thought also the chair umpire could take the initiative. That's why he's there sitting on the chair. He also saw it [was] out, he told me after the match. I thought he would do that, but he didn't. 'I think it's also difficult for him. He probably was scared to take such a big decision.' There was drama of a different kind earlier when American fifth seed Taylor Fritz marched on after his Australian opponent Jordan Thompson retired with a thigh injury at 6-1 3-0 down in their fourth-round meeting. Up next for Fritz is a meeting with Russian 17th seed Karen Khachanov who thumped Poland's Kamil Majchrzak 6-4 6-2 6-3.

There is no surprise here. Orlando Pirates require talent with continental experience if the Betway Premiership giants have ambitions to win the CAF Champions League (CAFCL) next term. The club known as the Buccaneers is expected to repeat last season's deep run in Africa, which saw them reach the semifinals of the CAFCL. According to reports from West Africa, Orlando Pirates have set their sights on Al Hilal's 19-year-old winger Adama Coulibaly. 'Meanwhile, second-placed Orlando Pirates Football Club in the South African league also made an offer of around €600,000, according to our sources.' Coulibaly joined the Sudanese powerhouse in 2024 from AS Bakaridjan in his homeland and is contracted to Hilal until 2029. According to Premier Soccer League (PSL) foreign quota, clubs are permitted to register no more than five internationals. Orlando Pirates' foreign quota status: Olisa Ndah (Nigerian) Karim Kimvuidi (Congolese) Gilberto (Angolan) Abdoulaye Mariko (Malian) Available. *Namibian international Deon Hotto is registered as a local after playing for over five years in Mzansi. It is worth noting that Gilberto is linked with an exit after making just 12 appearances before his January loan move to Petro de Luanda. Additionally, Ndah and Kimvuidi face uncertain futures amid rumours of moving abroad. The Buccaneers are also linked with another Mali international: Sadio Kounate.
