TimesofIndia.com in London:
Many prominent current and former cricketers assembled under one roof for the gala dinner hosted by
Yuvraj Singh
to raise funds for his YouWeCan Foundation. The entire Indian cricket team, including the support staff led by
Gautam Gambhir
, was in attendance and the star-studded gathering included the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Gayle, Kevin Pietersen, Brian Lara and Ashish Nehra.
Team India stayed for a little over an hour and participated in some fun activities before leaving the plush hotel in the heart of the city. Just when everyone was well settled for the dinner, and waiting for the other activities to begin, the giant screen flashed a familiar face as former India Test captain
Virat Kohli
was seen chatting with his friend Kevin Pietersen while having a bite.

Next up was a candid chat hosted by Gaurav Kapoor and it featured former India head coach
Ravi Shastri
, cricketers Yuvraj Singh, Kevin Pietersen, Chris Gayle and Darren Gough.
The initial segment didn't feature Kohli on the stage but after insistence from Gaurav, he made his way up and joined the rest of the pack. A trademark meet-and-greet with Chris Gayle later, he gave a rare reaction on Test retirement when Gaurav said that everyone misses him on the field.
"I just coloured my beard two days ago. You know it's time when you are colouring your beard every four days," says Kohli.
How Jasprit Bumrah is preparing for Lord's Test - batting, bowling and lot of jokes!
He had his former coach Shastri by his side and the two lavished praise on each other for the support during their time together with the Indian cricket team.
Kohli spoke at length about his bond with the former India cricketer and how it helped him become the Test cricketer he did, and achieve what he did for the country.
"Honestly, if I wasn't working with him... what happened in Test cricket wouldn't have been possible. The clarity which we had together is very hard to find. It's everything for cricketers to grow in their careers. Even he hadn't backed me the way he did... those press conferences where he took the bullets from the front line.
Things would have been different and I always have respect and regard for him, for being a massive part of my cricketing journey," says Kohli.
Poll
Should Virat Kohli consider returning to Test cricket?
Yes, he should
No, he should focus on ODI/T20
Depends on his fitness
As a youngster in the dressing room, Kohli spent a lot of time with Yuvraj and the two shared a very good bond - both on and off the field. The 36-year-old, who is in London for a lot of time these days, still remembers the first meeting between the two, his journey during the 2011 World Cup, the battle with cancer and that return to India colours.
"We shared a very good bond both on and off the field. I met him for the first time during a North Zone tournament in Bangalore. When I started playing for India, him, bhajju pa and
Zaheer Khan
took me under their wings. Really helped me grow as a player, made me comfortable in the dressing room. Lot of fun times off the field and made me aware of the lifestyle of getting to the top. These are the bonds I would cherish for the rest of my life. Watching him in the World Cup was very special and what we got to know after that was a shock.
Being so close to him... we had no idea. Then his battle with cancer and again the champion that he is.
.. coming on top and making a comeback to the team when I was leading the team.
Quiz:
Who's that IPL player?
"I clearly remember we played a game against England in Cuttack. There was a 2017 series we played at home and top-order got out early and Yuvi pa got 150 I think and MS scored 110 or something. I still remember telling KL or someone that this is like childhood days watching on big tv...
I have a lot of love and respect for him. It's a pleasure being here and I won't do it for any other person but him," says Kohli.
The conversations continued, the drinks continued to be poured into glasses of different shapes and sizes and the money continued to be raised for the noble cause. Amid all the noise, Kohli quietly left the stage, met his friend Gaurav and made his way to the hotel lobby with very minimal security. The area was briefly cordoned off but the moment he was out of the building, normalcy resumed.
Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.

'I'm against this...': Suresh Raina blames BCCI for Virat Kohli's early retirement from Test cricket

Former India player Suresh Raina has criticised the BCCI's decision to restrict family presence on overseas tours, suggesting it may have influenced Virat Kohli's early retirement from Test cricket. Raina highlighted the mental health impact on players during tough tours. read more Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has spoken out against the BCCI's decision to restrict players' families from joining them during overseas tours. Raina suggested that this move might have played a role in Virat Kohli's early retirement from Test cricket. Kohli retired from red-ball cricket in May, weeks before the start of the Test series between India and England. After India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 1-3 against Australia earlier this year, the BCCI released a 10-point guideline for players, which included limiting family time during foreign tours. The rule didn't go down well with everyone, including Virat Kohli, who had already expressed disappointment about it. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'It's very difficult to explain to people how grounding it is to just come back to your family every time you have something which is intense, which happens on the outside. I don't think people have an understanding of what value it brings to a large extent. And I feel quite disappointed about that because it's like people who have no control over what's going on are kind of brought into conversations and put out at the forefront that, 'oh, maybe they need to be kept away,' Kohli had said in March. More from First Cricket Raina slams BCCI for family restrictions Speaking to YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, Raina said that having family around is important for a player's mental health, especially during tough tours. 'You do have mental health issues. When you are going through a lean phase and there's an army gunning for your spot, then such issues crop up. You fear being dropped. When chips are down you need someone to talk to. When you're happy, you seldom need anyone. But when you're down, you fear talking thinking this may end up reaching the coach or the captain,' he said. 'So out of hesitation, players don't speak out,' Raina said. 'It is very important to have family on tours. BCCI has taken a big decision that family is not allowed - I'm against this. You are sending them to a tour for two months…family should be allowed. It's not that they (family) are against the players, they (also) would want us to score runs and the country to win. (Imagine) Virat Kohli playing, his daughter clapping - it's such a proud moment. He will set the stage on fire,' he added.

ENG vs IND: Captain Shubman Gill shines as Nitish Reddy gamble pays off at Lord's

Shubman Gill showcased his decision-making prowess on Day 1 of the third Test against England at Lord's. The Indian captain's bold call to bring on part-time pacer Nitish Kumar Reddy shortly after the first hour proved inspired. After England's openers had seen off the new-ball trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, they appeared to relax - only to be undone by the part-timer, who dismissed both in the same was introduced in the 14th over, immediately after a drinks break and a brief team huddle. The SunRisers Hyderabad all-rounder struck with just his second delivery - one angled down the leg side that cramped Ben Duckett for room. The left-handed opener attempted to glance it fine but was caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. | Lord's Test Day 1 Updates | Operating from the Members' End, Nitish almost had two in two. His very next delivery, to new batter Ollie Pope, held its line and took the outside edge. The ball flew to the gully region but dropped just short of captain Gill, who dived full stretch in an effort to take the catch. However, Nitish didn't have to wait long for his second. Just one ball later, he removed Zak Crawley with a peach - a good-length delivery that moved away, kissed the edge, and was neatly pouched by Pant. The wicketkeeper looked visibly surprised at the amount of movement the part-timer generated. good, @NKReddy07He came on to bowl in just the 14th over and struck twice, sending #BenDuckett and #ZakCrawley back! To the right-handers, he's challenged them with a great length in the last few overs," said England pacer Mark Wood on the to CricViz data, Nitish generated the most swing and seam among Indian bowlers in the first session - swing of 2.6 degrees and seam movement of 0.9 consistently hit a good length, bowling marginally fuller than the other pacers. Jasprit Bumrah bowled eight probing overs, beating the bat multiple times from both ends but remained wicketless. Gill displayed tactical acumen, using Bumrah cleverly - allowing him to bowl both with and against the Lord's slope in his two Deep, coming off a 10-wicket haul in the second Test at Edgbaston, found less assistance from the pitch this time. He was not given a spell from the Pavilion End, where he might have been more effective. Former England pacer Steve Harmison remarked that India "missed a trick" by not giving Akash the opportunity to bowl from that end, especially as he had troubled English batters previously with deliveries that seamed Siraj, meanwhile, bowled just five overs but did a tidy job, keeping the scoring in the break, Joe Root (24*) and Ollie Pope (12*) remained unbeaten as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy continued to deliver a fiercely contested battle at the Home of Cricket.- EndsTune InYou May Also Like
