'Implement CAA If You Care For Bengalis,' Himanta Sarma Dares Mamata Banerjee
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hit out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her statement on alleged harassment of Bengali migrants in the BJP-ruled states. Addressing the media late last night, Mr Sarma asked the Trinamool Congress leader to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in West Bengal if she 'cares for Bengalis.' The dare was laced with a belief and allegation that Ms Banerjee is only concerned about 'Muslim Bengalis.'
"Mamata Banerjee should realise that in Assam, Bengali Hindus are not only protected, but they have also been assimilated into the greater Assam landscape ... They are practising their language, religion, and are part of a greater Assamese society," said Mr Sarma while responding to a question by a reporter.
Mr Sarma boasted that there is no division between Assamese and Bengalis in Assam; however, he questioned the TMC leader's stance on Bengalis. "If you are at all interested in Bengali people, then why don't you implement CAA in West Bengal?" he asked Chief Minister Banerjee.
"The question is whether Mamata Banerjee likes Bengalis or only Muslim Bengalis. In my answer, Mamata Banerjee likes only Muslim Bengalis and if she comes to Assam, for the Muslim Bengali, Assamese people and Hindu Bengalis will not spare her."

Sharing the clipping on the social media site X (formerly Twitter), Mr Sarma reiterated his question and belief. He wrote, "Bengali Hindus are safe in Assam, but TMC is only concerned about Bengali Muslims. If they love Bengali Hindus so much, then why did they oppose the CAA?"
This comes after Ms Banerjee took to the streets of Kolkata on Thursday to protest the alleged harassment of Bengali speakers in BJP-ruled states. Accusing the BJP-led central and state governments of targeting Bengali migrants, she said Bengal fought for India's freedom, and BJP should be ashamed.
"What does BJP think? They will hurt Bengalis? They are calling them Rohingya. Rohingya are in Myanmar, not here. 22 lakh poor migrant workers are being targeted. I appeal to them to return home. They will be safe here. The BJP is sending Bengali speakers to detention camps. Is West Bengal not in India?" Ms Banerjee said. She asked if the BJP had forgotten the Bengalis' sacrifice and freedom fighters.

1 2 3 Guwahati: Many sitting BJP MLAs in Assam may lose tickets for the state assembly elections to be held early next year, as several new constituencies were created by dissolving erstwhile constituencies during the delimitation process in the state two years ago. After a two-day "Chintan Baithak" with 51 party leaders, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "All sitting MLAs cannot get tickets. Many may voluntarily opt out. Several constituencies were dissolved during the delimitation, and new faces will be introduced, especially since SC and ST seats have increased." The 2023 delimitation exercise raised the number of scheduled caste (SC) constituencies from eight to nine, and scheduled tribe (ST) seats from 16 to 19. During the assessment, the CM said, how the govt schemes have been implemented and to what extent in every assembly constituency will be thoroughly examined. "Along with this, there will be other factors which will also be scrutinised before taking a decision on candidatures," he added. On the other hand, the CM said during the "Chintan Baithak", how the manifesto would be, to whom the candidature would be given, how the publicity would be carried out, how the campaign would be designed, what the issues would be, and how the narratives would be, etc., were discussed in depth. The feedback from all the 51 senior party workers and the minutes of the Chintan Baithak will be used by the BJP's central committee and state leadership to complete the election process in a disciplined manner, the CM said. Regarding the alliance with BJP's present key ally in the state, AGP, Sarma said there is no practical reason for which the alliance should not be carried forward. "AGP has been in alliance with the BJP since 2014, and the alliance will continue. Issues may arise regarding tickets. During that process, someone will get a ticket and someone will not," he added.

AAP councillor arrested over gambling racket, BJP demands his expulsion
A fresh political slugfest has broken out in Delhi with the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Joginder Singh Bunty in connection with an alleged illegal betting racket Saturday night. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost no time in demanding Bunty's expulsion — a move aimed at cornering a party already struggling to find political footing after it was ousted from power following the Assembly elections in the city earlier this year. However, the AAP shot back and stuck to its expected line of defence, accusing the BJP of targeting rivals. Bunty, a first-time councillor, was arrested along with six others from an office on Kadipur Road in Southwest Delhi, where the police claimed an illegal gambling operation was underway. 'The police arrested seven people from an office on Kadipur Road for being involved in a gambling operation on Saturday night. A tip-off was received about the operation,' a senior police officer said. The AAP leader, however, is no stranger to controversy. In 2022, a video had surfaced online, showing him brandishing a revolver while dancing during his campaign for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, which had led to the registration of a case under the Arms Act. Bunty had still won the elections, defeating the candidates of the BJP, the Congress and two Independents. However, the latest case comes at a time when the AAP, which until recently had held power in both the Delhi Assembly and the MCD, is scrambling to regain its foothold in the city. Nikhil has reportedly identified 80 winnable assembly seats across the state.
