Sitting volleyball showdown - Sports - Al-Ahram Weekly
The team showed why they are a Paralympic medaling team, as they did not drop a set all competition. The final saw Egypt face off against Rwanda – who themselves dropped only one set in all the tournament. Egypt came out on top with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-20 victory for the gold medal, but both teams earned the PVA berths at the 2026 World Championships for finishing first and second. In the bronze match, Algeria defeated Morocco in straight sets, 25-18, 27-25, 25-12.
Egypt was crowned champions of the African Championship after a commanding 3-0 win over Rwanda in the final match of the tournament held in Kenya. The championship also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 World Cup in China.
Egypt claimed the title with undeniable merit. They began their campaign with a 3-0 win over South Africa, followed by another 3-0 victory against Morocco. In the semi-final, the team maintained their dominance with a clean sweep of Algeria, securing a spot in the final and ultimately achieving the gold medal.
With the victory, Egypt successfully defended its continental title, continuing a legacy of dominance in sitting volleyball across Africa since the tournament's inception.
Emad Ramadan, president of the Egyptian Paralympic Volleyball Federation and head of the delegation, played a pivotal and positive role in the team's impressive showing. His leadership and experience were instrumental in guiding the squad to a well-deserved championship.
Ramadan dedicated the win to Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, Ashraf Sobhi, minister of youth and sports, and to the Egyptian people. He emphasised that Egyptian sports are witnessing a golden era under the exceptional support of President Al-Sisi.
The Egyptian squad included Hesham Salaheddin as team captain, along with Ashraf Zaghloul, Abdel-Nabi Hassan, Mohamed Al-Hennawi, Hossam Massoud, Al-Sayed Moussa, Ahmed Khamis, Ahmed Fadl, Zakaria Al-Sayed, Hamada Al-Sayed, Ahmed Zakaria, and Mohamed Hamdi.
The team was led by a dedicated technical staff comprised of Mohamed Bashir as head coach, Mohamed Saad as coach, and Amin Abdel-Moneim as team manager.
Egypt's preparation for the tournament was both intensive and strategic, drawing from the valuable experience gained in previous competitions. Notably, the team had also won the last African Championship held in Nigeria, where they defeated Morocco 3-0 in the final.
The coaching team has been praised for its dynamic leadership, which focuses on continuous player development through rigorous training sessions and friendly matches. The national team's roster reflects a healthy balance of experienced veterans and promising young talent, positioning Egypt as a formidable contender in upcoming continental and global tournaments.
Ramadan met German Juergen Schrapp, president of the World ParaVolley Federation, on the sidelines of the championship.
During the meeting, the two leaders agreed to initiate a cooperative partnership between the International Federation and the Egyptian Sitting Volleyball Federation, with the goal of positioning Egypt as the leading force in developing sitting volleyball across Africa.
Schrapp, a former sitting volleyball player and captain of the German national team, shares a longstanding friendship with Ramadan, dating back over 20 years.
Egypt competed in Group B, alongside South Africa, Morocco, and Nigeria, while Group A included Kenya, Rwanda and Algeria.
The team was determined to defend its continental title, which it has held since the championship's inception. Under the leadership of Ramadan, the federation aims to use this tournament as a platform to test and develop new players at the international level.
The federation also aspired to deliver an outstanding performance, claim the championship trophy, and dedicate the victory to President Al-Sisi and to the Egyptian people.
Ramadan extended his sincere thanks to Minister Sobhi for his ongoing and unwavering support of the Egyptian Sitting Volleyball Federation. He also praised the minister's close attention to every detail and his efforts in ensuring a smooth journey and preparation for the team.
Ramadan also expressed his gratitude to Amr Al-Haddad and Mahmoud Abdel-Aziz, assistants to the minister of sports, for their significant efforts in supporting all Paralympic sports, including sitting volleyball.
Speaking to Ramadan, Al-Haddad stated that the Egyptian state provides strong support to all national teams. 'We are always thankful for the blessing of safety and security that the Egyptian people enjoy under the wise leadership of President Al-Sisi.'
He added, before the tournament, that the Egyptian team was determined to defend its continental title. He also affirmed the federation's hope to deliver an honorable performance and to lift the championship trophy once again.
Ramadan also held an extensive meeting with a distinguished group of legendary figures from across generations of the sport.
He warmly welcomed all the icons who visited the federation's headquarters to congratulate the board on Egypt's recent triumph.
During the meeting, Ramadan discussed plans to establish a Sitting Volleyball Academy aiming to develop a unified curriculum for coaches, referees, administrators, event organisers, and all stakeholders involved in the sport under the federation's umbrella.
The gathering was marked by a spirit of pride and collaboration. Among those in attendance were Hossameddin Mustafa, president of the Egyptian Paralympic Committee and honorary president of the Sitting Volleyball Federation, Wagih Hamdi, major general Mansour Al-Mohammadi, Mossad Al-Ayouti, Captain Mohamed Badawi Basheer, captain Amin Abdel-Moneim, media figure Asaad Talaat, Marwan Saleh, and captain Essam Shehata.
Mustafa extended his congratulations to Ramadan, expressing his support for the launch of this important initiative. Sameh Salem, vice president of the federation, also called in to welcome the guests at the federation's headquarters and pledged his full support to overcome any obstacles and ensure the success of this significant step for Paralympic sports in Egypt.

Defending champions England beat Spain on penalties to win Women's Euro 2025 - World
Chloe Kelly converted the decisive kick as England beat Spain 3-1 on penalties to win the Women's Euro 2025 after Sunday's final had finished 1-1 at the end of extra time, allowing the Lionesses to avenge their defeat in the World Cup final of two years ago and retain their continental crown. It looked as though Spain would repeat their victory over England in Sydney two years ago as they dominated the game at St Jakob-Park in Basel and led through Mariona Caldentey's first-half header. But England did not panic, having already trailed against both Sweden in the quarter-finals and Italy in the semis before finding a way to win. Alessia Russo headed in their equaliser just before the hour mark, and no further goals meant a shoot-out in which Kelly -- who once again had a huge impact off the bench -- netted the winner. It was an agonising way to lose for Spain, but they failed to score three of their spot-kicks, with reigning Ballon d'Or Aitana Bonmati seeing her effort saved. Sarina Wiegman's England are therefore back-to-back European champions, with this triumph coming three years after they defeated Germany in extra time at Wembley to win a first women's major tournament. Defeating Spain here helps make up for the agony of losing that World Cup final in 2023, and the victory also confirms Wiegman's place among the coaching greats. She has now won three consecutive European Championships, having led her native Netherlands to victory in 2017 before doing the same with England three years ago. Spain, meanwhile, fell short in their quest to add a maiden European Championship title to the World Cup they won in Australia. La Roja dominated possession as expected, but ultimately paid the price for not putting the game to bed against an England side who never know when they are beaten. Wiegman's team had been 2-0 down against Sweden in the last eight before scoring twice to force extra time as they eventually won on penalties. Then substitute Michelle Agyemang's 96th-minute equaliser denied Italy in the semi-finals in Geneva, when Kelly netted the winner in extra time. England had ultimately not played well during much of their run to the final, but it did not matter. Wiegman had taken a gamble on the fitness of Lauren James which paid off, but not quite as planned -- having come off with an ankle injury against Italy, the Chelsea winger did not last until half-time and was replaced by Kelly. Caldentey and Russo exchange blows By that point Spain were already in front, scoring when Bonmati and Athenea del Castillo combined to set up Ona Battle and her cross from the right was headed in by Caldentey. Montse Tome's Spain, with seven players from Barcelona in their starting line-up, had already been in control before that and it felt like England's best hope was for complacency from their opponents. The best example of that came with the game still goalless, when Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll played a careless short pass to Laia Aleixandri in her own area. Lauren Hemp was alive to the opportunity and pounced, but Coll reacted well to make the save. Yet even at 1-0 it felt like England were still in the game, and they took their chance when it came in the 57th minute when Kelly crossed from the left for her Arsenal teammate Russo to level the scores. England -- with more fans on their side in the crowd of 34,203 -- now sensed yet another comeback win was on the cards, and it took the fingertips of Coll to prevent a Kelly effort from finding the far corner midway through the second half. Agyemang then came on for Russo, hoping to once again play the role of super-sub, while Salma Paralluelo was among those brought on for Spain. Paralluelo found herself in a promising position on several occasions as the game continued into extra time, and from there to the gripping tension of penalties. Beth Mead's first kick for England was saved after she was forced to retake, and captain Leah Williamson also had her effort stopped by Coll. However, Alex Greenwood and Niamh Charles both scored, while Patri Guijarro was the only successful taker for Spain before Kelly stepped up to win it. Kwesi Appiah banks on Al-Hilal core as Sudan names squad for CHAN 2024
Published: Sunday, 27 July 2025 Ghanaian tactician Kwesi Appiah has placed his trust in a strong contingent of Al-Hilal players as he named Sudan's 25-man squad for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. With 13 players from domestic champions Al-Hilal Khartoum making the cut, Appiah is clearly leaning on club chemistry and recent domestic form to guide the Falcons of Jediane in what promises to be a highly competitive Group D. Sudan, two-time participants in CHAN (2011 and 2018), are drawn in a daunting group alongside defending champions Senegal, continental giants Nigeria, and Congo Brazzaville. Appiah, who guided Ghana at the 2014 World Cup and now leads Sudan's football revival amid the backdrop of a civil strife, will be hoping his local stars can rise to the challenge and exceed past achievements—most notably their third-place finish on home soil in 2011. The announcement of the squad came shortly after the conclusion of the Sudan Premier League and Super Cup. The national team is expected to assemble immediately and will travel to Zanzibar on July 30 for their final preparations before CHAN 2024 kicks off on August 2. Appiah's selection reflects a balance between experience and form. Al-Merriekh Khartoum, the country's other powerhouse, has also contributed a fair number of key players, including goalkeeper Ahmed Al-Fateh and midfielder Mohamed Al-Rasheed. Hay Al-Wadi Nyala and Al-Amal Atbara also have one representative each. The Ghanaian coach will be looking to instil tactical discipline and belief into his squad, with hopes of a deep tournament run. Given the strength of Group D opponents, Sudan will need to be at their best from the first whistle. Sudan open their campaign against Congo Brazzaville before facing Nigeria and then wrap up the group stage against reigning champions Senegal. Full Sudan Squad for TotalEnergies CHAN 2024 Goalkeepers: Ahmed Al-Fateh (Al-Merriekh Khartoum) Mohamed Al-Nour Adam (Al-Zamala Umm Ruwaba) Mohamed Madani (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Defenders: Ramadan Ajeeb Sharif (Al-Merriekh Khartoum) Awad Zaid Gadain (Al-Merriekh Khartoum) Musab Mohamed Makin (Al-Merriekh Khartoum) Ahmed Abdelmomen Ahmed (Al-Merriekh Khartoum) Mohamed Ahmed Saeed (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Altayeb Abdelrazek (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Mazen Bashir Siembo (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Farees Abdullah Mamoun (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Midfielders: Mohamed Al-Rasheed Mahmoud (Al-Merriekh Khartoum) Salah Al-Din Adel (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Wali Al-Din Khidr (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Abdelrazek Omar (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Yasser Muzamil Al-Tayeb (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Ahmed Ismat (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Al-Musbah Faisal (Al-Amal Atbara) Forwards: Yasser Awad Bushara (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Ali Abdallah Hamad Al-Neel (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Mohamed Abdulrahman Yousif (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Mubarak Abdallah (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Mousa Hussein Mousa (Al-Hilal Khartoum) Mohamed Tia Aboudikin (Al-Merriekh Khartoum) Mazen Fad Al-Bahli (Hay Al-Wadi Nyala)
