A dog waking up from emergency surgery and immediately giving his owner kisses and cuddles has left the internet fighting back tears.
After going out for a walk with his owners, Zeus the pit bull suddenly became sick and could barely move. It was a terrifying experience for his owner Liliana Mejia, 22, who noticed how scared he looked.
Zeus was breathing heavily and his eyes were wide. Before long, his back legs stopped moving, as Mejia of Austin, Texas, told Newsweek that it seemed like his "body was giving out beneath him."
Mejia and her fiancé got Zeus home safely and tried to ease his pain.
"His stomach looked painfully bloated and he couldn't lie down without being in discomfort," Mejia said. "Every time he did, he'd let out this heartbreaking grunt before getting up to pace. We offered him his favorite treat, but he didn't even look at it. That's when we knew something was seriously wrong."

Whenever Mejia moved, Zeus would follow her and stare at her directly. She felt as though he was warning her that something was wrong. It was heartbreaking for Mejia, who said she could "feel his fear and pain" in that moment.
Zeus was rushed to the vet where he was diagnosed with Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), otherwise known as bloat. He was taken for an emergency gastropexy to prevent the stomach from twisting.
GDV is a life-threatening condition in which the stomach becomes dilated with gas and/or fluid, and it becomes twisted. This prevents the gas or fluid from escaping, causing rising pressure in the stomach, while also decreasing blood flow to the stomach tissues.
"This was an incredibly emotional moment. We were faced with the heartbreaking possibility that we might have to say goodbye, as GDV can rapidly become fatal. We didn't fully understand the complexity of this surgery, so our hearts felt shattered, filled with fear and uncertainty about the outcome for our beloved boy," Mejia said.
Fortunately, Zeus pulled through and was reunited with his owners after waking up from surgery. Although he was groggy and weak, Zeus made sure to shower his owners with love and affection as soon as he awoke.
For Mejia, that was a heartwarming reminder that she is Zeus's entire world, and they have such an extraordinary connection.
"Even though he was barely aware of his surroundings because of all the medication, he still recognized us—and that was incredibly moving. Being there with him in that moment, offering comfort and love, felt like the most precious gift we could give."
Mejia was able to visit Zeus on multiple occasions before he was discharged from hospital. For every moment of those visits, she said his "affection never faded."
She captured an adorable clip showing just how loving he was with her following his surgery and shared it on TikTok (@lilimejia21). The clip has melted plenty of hearts online, leading to more than 1 million views and over 255,900 likes at the time of writing.
Zeus is back home now and recovering gradually. He's still taking medication and will need to have his stitches removed in the coming days, but he's acting more like himself.
For Mejia, she'll never forget how trusting he was immediately after surgery.
"Despite the pain and the fog of medication clouding his mind, he kept showing his love in every gesture. Even in his most vulnerable state, he found the strength to reach out and remind me that our connection is unbreakable," she told Newsweek.
"Sharing his journey felt important—not just to connect with others, but to raise awareness about how quickly GDV can strike. I am forever thankful for all the kind words from everyone. I firmly believe that without all the prayers and positive thoughts, his outcome might have been very different," Mejia continued.
Social media users have been incredibly moved by the video of Zeus after waking up from surgery, leading to more than 3,300 comments on the post so far.
One comment reads: "The way he's staring at you and smiling in the beginning."
Another person wrote: "He looks so happy to have you there with him."
While another TikTok user replied: "So happy to see this. Feel better Zeus."

Map Shows States Where Children Urged to Avoid 'Prolonged Outdoor Exposure'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Air quality officials in six states urged children and adults with sensitivities to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure on July 3 and the Fourth of July amid ozone and harmful levels of fine-particle pollution. Why It Matters This new wave of air quality alerts comes after Canadian wildfires prompted a slew of similar ones across the upper Midwest earlier this summer. Wildfires, blowing dust and ozone are all sources of dangerous air pollution that can trigger breathing difficulties and other health issues. Air quality alerts are more often issued during the summer fire season and when ozone is at higher concentrations because of sunlight. In addition to these pollution sources, fireworks celebrations will boom across the nation on Thursday night and over the weekend, worsening the air quality. A map created by Newsweek shows which states are affected by ozone and other pollutants on Thursday. A map created by Newsweek shows which states are affected by ozone and other pollutants on Thursday. Newsweek What To Know As of Thursday afternoon, air quality alerts were in place for the following states: Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Colorado and California. "Particle pollution can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems such as heart attacks, bronchitis, asthma attacks, and difficulty breathing," reads an air quality alert issued by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) in California. "Everyone can be affected, but sensitive groups such as people with lung or heart disease, older adults, people who are pregnant, children, and those who spend a lot of time outdoors are at greater risk." In addition to staying indoors, people were urged to keep windows and doors closed, run an air conditioner, avoid using whole-house fans or swamp coolers, and steer clear of fireplaces, candles, incense, grilling and gasoline-powered equipment until conditions improve. Ozone pollution is typically worse during the summer, according to a report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It's caused "when pollutants emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers, refineries, chemical plants, and other sources chemically react in the presence of sunlight." Air quality monitoring maps from AirNow—a data site partnership between the EPA; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; National Park Service; NASA; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; along with tribal, state and local air quality agencies—show moderate air quality detected across much of the nation. In Minnesota, however, air quality was also shown as being unhealthy for some. "Members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. The general public is less likely to be affected," AirNow said about the air quality levels. What People Are Saying NWS meteorologist Alexander McGinnis, who works at the Indianapolis office, told Newsweek: "Mid-summer, when it gets hotter and the winds are lighter, we do usually see a few days that require air quality alerts due to higher concentrations of ozone." South Coast AQMD posted to X on Thursday: "#FIREWORKS PARTICLE POLLUTION ADVISORY (July 4-5): Poor air quality due to #IndependenceDay fireworks is likely this #FourthofJuly holiday. Personal 'backyard' fireworks also contribute to this air pollution and may lead to negative health effects." Air quality alert issued by the Arkansas Division of Environmental Quality: "Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor exertion today. Symptoms of ozone exposure may include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, headaches, nausea, and eye and throat irritation." What's Next Most air quality alerts will expire by Thursday or Friday night, depending on the location.

Inside the Rise of Therapy-Informed Aesthetics with Dr. Ellie Sateei

Walk into Dr. Ellie Sateei's clinic expecting a little filler and you might end up talking about your mother-in-law. Or your ex. Or the fact that Instagram filters low-key broke your brain. Her treatment doesn't start with a needle. She starts by asking this question: Why do you want to change your face? According to a recent press release, Dr. Ellie likes to take a human-first approach to aesthetic medicine that centers self-awareness and what she calls 'The Psychology Behind the Needle'. It's about understanding the emotional story underneath the request. 'Patients don't just come to me with a request for filler or Botox,' she said. 'They come with unspoken fears, years of insecurity, or a quiet hope for change.' That hope (sometimes quiet, sometimes desperate) isn't always about looking younger. It's about feeling more seen. Her job, as she sees it, is to help patients sort through that. And sometimes, to talk them out of doing anything at all. The face isn't just skin. It's an emotional billboard. Stress and burnout all show up eventually. Research shows chronic stress increases cortisol levels that break down the skin's barrier and slow repair, which can lead to dullness and even premature aging. So when a patient walks in exhausted or overwhelmed, Dr. Ellie doesn't gloss over it. She also leans into subtle treatments that support internal wellness, like injectable moisturizers that restore hydration from within, not structural fillers. Or red light therapy that supports circulation, collagen, and even mood balance. These aren't about erasing age, they're about helping people feel physically and emotionally better in their skin. Dr. Ellie leans toward treatments like that when they align with what a patient actually needs. Not what they think they need because of TikTok. We've come to see that overuse of aesthetic procedures (especially among younger patients) is growing, and experts warn it's driven more by social media than self-connection. When patients chase a filtered version of themselves, outcomes become about performance, not identity. Dr. Ellie says no a lot. She actually helps patients not proceed with procedures. That holding back, what the press release refers to as her 'championing self-respect,' matters in a space where excess still rules. That matches up with growing concerns about cosmetic addiction, especially among young patients. One study found that although injectables can improve confidence, they can also backfire if someone's using them to mask deeper issues. Some patients leave her clinic glowing. Some leave tear-stained and unaltered. But what they don't leave with is regret. That might be the biggest result of all. Because the outcome isn't always smoother skin, it's clarity. Control. Feeling more like yourself, not less. In a world of overdone fillers and flash sales, her press release calls her work a 'quiet revolution.' It's a rare reset: doing aesthetics slower, with more questions and fewer assumptions, and her patients are leaving her office feeling more grounded and more informed.
