National Couscous Day 2025: What is couscous and how to cook it perfectly?
Happy National Couscous Day! Whether you're a longtime fan of this fluffy staple or you're just now asking, 'Wait… what even is couscous?', today's the perfect time to give it a try, or give it a glow-up. Couscous might look like a grain, but it's actually a type of pasta, tiny steamed balls made from semolina flour and water. There are three main types: Moroccan couscous – The most common and smallest. It cooks lightning fast. Israeli couscous (aka pearl couscous) – Bigger, rounder, with a more chewy texture. Lebanese couscous (aka Moghrabieh) – The largest, and takes longer to cook. You'll find Moroccan couscous in most grocery stores usually in the rice or international foods section. Besides being fun to say (koos-koos!), couscous is a weeknight hero. It's ready in 5 minutes, soaks up sauces like a sponge, and plays well with everything from roasted veggies to grilled meats to cold salads. Oh, and it's naturally low in fat, high in selenium, and great for meal prepping. How to cook couscous (the right way) Let's talk about Moroccan couscous, since it's the most common and the easiest to get right. Basic fluffy couscous recipe What you need: 1 cup couscous 1 cup water (or broth for more flavor) 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter A pinch of salt Instructions: Boil the water or broth. Add the salt and olive oil. Take it off the heat, then stir in the couscous. Cover with a lid or foil. Let it steam for 5 minutes, don't peek! Fluff it gently with a fork. That's it! Pro tip: Want extra flavor? Add spices (like cumin or turmeric), chopped herbs, or a squeeze of lemon juice while fluffing. Cooking Pearl Couscous (Israeli Couscous) This one's more like cooking pasta. Quick rundown: Toast it in olive oil for 2–3 mins (optional but tasty). Add water or broth (1½ cups for every 1 cup of pearl couscous). Simmer uncovered for 10–12 mins until tender. Drain excess liquid, then fluff. It has a bouncier, nuttier vibe than the regular kind and holds up really well in salads. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn More - How Donating Sperm May Boost Your Income SpellRock Undo Fun ways to eat couscous Once you master the basics, couscous becomes a blank canvas. Here are some easy ideas: Roasted Veggie Couscous – Toss with zucchini, bell peppers, onions, and a dollop of pesto. Couscous Salad – Mix with chickpeas, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, feta, and lemon vinaigrette. Spicy Moroccan-Style – Add raisins, almonds, cinnamon, and serve with spiced chicken or lamb. Couscous Breakfast Bowl – Yes, really. Try it warm with cinnamon, nuts, and fruit. Few cooking tips: Don't boil it like pasta. It's more like steaming. Always fluff with a fork, not a spoon. Leftovers? Store in the fridge for 3–4 days and reheat with a splash of water or broth. Celebrate the day, one bowl at a time So this National Couscous Day, skip the plain rice and try something a little fluffier. Whether you go savory, sweet, spiced, or simple, couscous is the ultimate last-minute dinner saver—and way easier than it looks.

Putrada Ekadashi 2025 Vrat Katha: Check shubh muhurat and why devotees observe this auspicious day for children's wellbeing
On Tuesday, Hindu devotees are marking the sacred occasion of Putrada Ekadashi , a fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu and observed during the Shukla Paksha of the Shravan month. According to the Vedic calendar, this Ekadashi is believed to bring blessings of good health and long life to children. Couples seeking children also observe the fast with the belief that it can help them conceive. Putrada Ekadashi is one of the 24 Ekadashis in a year, each occurring on the eleventh lunar day of each fortnight. It holds a special significance in Sanatan Dharma, especially for childless couples, as the name itself means "giver of sons." It speaks of Mahishmati's King Mahajita, who was a just and virtuous ruler but deeply saddened by the absence of a child. Despite his noble rule and virtuous actions, the king remained childless and expressed his sorrow before his court. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Knee Pain? Start Eating These Foods, and Feel Your Pain Go Away Undo 'I have not committed any sins. I have never taken wealth unjustly from my people, nor have I caused them any harm. I have always honoured the Gods and Brahmins. I treat my subjects as if they were my own children. I have never been jealous and have always acted fairly. The laws in my kingdom are not made to create fear, but to ensure justice. Despite all of this, I suffer. I do not understand why. I ask you all to help me find the cause of my suffering. Will I ever be free of this pain in this lifetime?' said the king. To find an answer, his ministers sought the wisdom of Maharishi Lomasha in the forest. Live Events Sage Lomasha's counsel and the power of the fast The ministers greeted the sage with folded hands: 'O revered one, we are truly blessed to be in your presence.' The sage responded, 'Honourable minister, I am pleased by your humility and conduct. Please tell me the reason for your visit. I will do my best to help, for our bodies are meant to perform good deeds.' The ministers explained their king's sorrow. 'O Rishivara, you are more capable than Brahma himself in understanding our troubles. King Mahajita of Mahishmati is virtuous and dearly loved by his people. He treats his subjects like his own children, yet he remains childless. This causes him great sorrow, which we, his people, also feel. It is our duty to share in our king's happiness and sorrow. We do not know the cause of his childlessness, which is why we have come to you. Now that we have found you, we believe our suffering will end. Please tell us what can be done so our king may have a son. This would be a great kindness to us all.' After meditating, the sage revealed that the king's suffering was due to past karma. 'O noble ones, in a past life your king was proud and committed sinful acts. He wandered from village to village. Once, on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, he had gone without food for two days. At noon, he came to a reservoir to drink water. There, a cow that had just given birth was also drinking. He drove the thirsty cow away so he could drink first. That is the reason the king now suffers. The merit from observing Ekadashi in his previous life earned him a royal birth in this one. However, the sin of turning away the thirsty cow caused his present childlessness.' The ministers pleaded for a remedy. 'O revered sage, the scriptures say that good deeds can wash away past sins. Please show us a way to absolve the king of his past misdeeds so he may be blessed with a child.' The sage advised: 'If all of you observe the Putrada Ekadashi fast during the Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravan, stay awake throughout the night, and dedicate the merit of this fast to your king, then he will be blessed with a son. His suffering will be removed as a result.' Blessings after observance The ministers followed the sage's advice. They observed the fast and stayed awake on the night of Ekadashi. On Dwadashi, they offered the merit of their fasting to the king. As a result, the queen conceived and later gave birth to a son. This event gave the Ekadashi its name—Putrada Ekadashi—or 'giver of sons.'
