Putrada Ekadashi 2025: The Vrat Katha of King Mahajita
According to Drik Panchang, the Putrada
Ekadashi Vrat Katha
dates back to the Dvapara Yuga. It speaks of Mahishmati's King Mahajita, who was a just and virtuous ruler but deeply saddened by the absence of a child. Despite his noble rule and virtuous actions, the king remained childless and expressed his sorrow before his court.

'I have not committed any sins. I have never taken wealth unjustly from my people, nor have I caused them any harm. I have always honoured the Gods and Brahmins. I treat my subjects as if they were my own children. I have never been jealous and have always acted fairly. The laws in my kingdom are not made to create fear, but to ensure justice. Despite all of this, I suffer. I do not understand why. I ask you all to help me find the cause of my suffering. Will I ever be free of this pain in this lifetime?' said the king.
To find an answer, his ministers sought the wisdom of Maharishi Lomasha in the forest.

Sage Lomasha's counsel and the power of the fast
The ministers greeted the sage with folded hands: 'O revered one, we are truly blessed to be in your presence.'
The sage responded, 'Honourable minister, I am pleased by your humility and conduct. Please tell me the reason for your visit. I will do my best to help, for our bodies are meant to perform good deeds.'
The ministers explained their king's sorrow. 'O Rishivara, you are more capable than Brahma himself in understanding our troubles. King Mahajita of Mahishmati is virtuous and dearly loved by his people. He treats his subjects like his own children, yet he remains childless. This causes him great sorrow, which we, his people, also feel. It is our duty to share in our king's happiness and sorrow. We do not know the cause of his childlessness, which is why we have come to you. Now that we have found you, we believe our suffering will end. Please tell us what can be done so our king may have a son. This would be a great kindness to us all.'
After meditating, the sage revealed that the king's suffering was due to past karma.
'O noble ones, in a past life your king was proud and committed sinful acts. He wandered from village to village. Once, on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, he had gone without food for two days. At noon, he came to a reservoir to drink water. There, a cow that had just given birth was also drinking. He drove the thirsty cow away so he could drink first. That is the reason the king now suffers. The merit from observing Ekadashi in his previous life earned him a royal birth in this one. However, the sin of turning away the thirsty cow caused his present childlessness.'
The ministers pleaded for a remedy.
'O revered sage, the scriptures say that good deeds can wash away past sins. Please show us a way to absolve the king of his past misdeeds so he may be blessed with a child.'
The sage advised: 'If all of you observe the Putrada Ekadashi fast during the Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravan, stay awake throughout the night, and dedicate the merit of this fast to your king, then he will be blessed with a son. His suffering will be removed as a result.'
Blessings after observance
The ministers followed the sage's advice. They observed the fast and stayed awake on the night of Ekadashi. On Dwadashi, they offered the merit of their fasting to the king. As a result, the queen conceived and later gave birth to a son.
This event gave the Ekadashi its name—Putrada Ekadashi—or 'giver of sons.'

Chaos, delays at post-office: Server woe clashes with Rakhi rush, poorly serving people & staff
Bhopal: An unusually crowded, noisy and haphazard scene would've greeted a person if they were to visit the main post office in TT Nagar on Tuesday. Long queues at each window and loud sporadic arguments and quarelling due to the "server problem" became a common sight. With the Raksha Bhandhan festival nearing, people were eager to send rakhis and gifts through posts from kin far away, the postal department servers played spoilsport. For the last two days the department servers have been down nationally, and no parcels could be booked via speed post service. Consumers are making rounds of sub-offices to main offices, without any luck. Instead, crowds are swelling by the hour at the post offices and restless consumers are arguing with the harried postal staff. "I've been standing here since 4pm and there is no guarantee when the system will be up and my parcel will be booked. Why is this slackness during festival hours, can't the department fix it?" asked a consumer. A staffer explained that the servers were down nationwide and are now fluctuating, leading to prolonged waiting times. Wishing anonymity he told TOI, "We cannot do much when the servers aren't working well. Another resident, Bhawna, observed the long queues and server issues at the office gates and remarked, "There's some technical problem, so we'll return to the office again tomorrow." Reeta Garg, senior superintendent at Central Post Office, TT Nagar said, "New states are being added to the recently launched application, so it has slowed down a bit. The new application is in a transition phase but we're expecting that it will be resolved by tomorrow (Wednesday). Keeping the Rakhi festival in mind, we'll be opening all major post offices in Bhopal early at 7.30 am starting Wednesday till Aug 9 to cover up for the inconvenience faced by people. " Meanwhile, another staffer at the office anonymously stated that they hope the servers become fully operational today; otherwise, early opening of the office at 7:30 am will not benefit anyone— the consumers or the employees.

Pinarayi Vijayan seeks list of unsafe govt buildings in 2 weeks
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed the disaster relief department to identify decrepit govt buildings, including schools and hospitals, and submit a list within two weeks. The directive, issued during a high-level meeting, comes in the wake of multiple incidents last month -- including the death of a 52-year-old woman after a toilet complex collapsed at Kottayam medical college and the electrocution of a 13-year-old student at an aided school in Kollam. In another scare, a portion of the roof at a govt upper primary school in Karthikappally, Alappuzha, collapsed. Fortunately, the incident occurred on a Sunday and no one was injured. At the meeting, it was decided that all unsafe public buildings will be categorised based on whether they require immediate repair or demolition. In the case of school buildings, demolitions must be scheduled during holidays to avoid disrupting classes. Until the buildings are rebuilt, local bodies, PTAs and the education department must ensure alternative arrangements to conduct classes. The CM also instructed that safety inspections of unaided school buildings be carried out simultaneously. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like India to host free stock market courses Mister Market Pro Undo A software system will be developed to record details of public buildings in hazardous conditions. Earthquake shakes New Jersey near NYC: USGS confirms 2.7 magnitude quake
A small earthquake hit New Jersey on Tuesday just after noon — at exactly 12:11 p.m. ET, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake had a magnitude of 2.7 and happened about 7.7 miles deep, near Hillsdale, New Jersey, which is 25 miles from Midtown Manhattan. The exact spot was traced to Viola Terrace in Westwood, based on the USGS's latitude and longitude data. People in the area were surprised, with one user on X writing: "Why did my building just shake again?" Bergen County's Office of Emergency Management is checking for any damage, but as of now, no damage has been reported. The Saturday quake was felt all across NYC and even reached up to Connecticut, but there were no injuries or serious damage, as per the report by Fox5. After Saturday's quake, the USGS got over 10,000 reports from people on its "Did You Feel It?" website. Live Events Earthquakes in NYC happen more than you think Earthquakes in the New York area are not rare — they happen every couple of years, according to USGS history data. The New York - Philadelphia - Wilmington urban zone sees small earthquakes regularly, and moderate ones about twice every 100 years — with major quakes recorded in 1737 and 1884, as stated by the Fox5 report. Since 1950, there have been 43 earthquakes of similar size (to this week's) within 155 miles of the epicenter. East Coast earthquakes are felt over much larger areas than West Coast ones. For example , a 4.0 quake can be felt 100 km away and a 5.5 quake can be felt up to 500 km away. Recent examples, in April 2024, a 4.8 magnitude quake in Tewksbury, NJ, was felt as far as Boston and Baltimore. In January 2024, a 1.7 quake in Astoria, Queens, was felt locally but caused no damage. Unlike the San Andreas Fault in California, East Coast quakes aren't usually tied to famous fault lines. That's because they're far from tectonic plate boundaries and are caused by hidden underground faults, say USGS scientists, as mentioned in the report by Fox5. FAQs Q1.
