A WAVE of new car brands is set to enter the UK market this year, with many hailing from China as they shift their focus towards Europe.
Among them is BYD's rival to Porsche, as well as NIO's budget-friendly sub-brand, Firefly, which could compete with established players such as Renault and Dacia.

Porsche could soon face some serious competition from China in the form of motoring giant BYD.
The ever-expanding car brand, one of the largest private companies in China, has already begun making waves globally, including in the UK, with its range of Tesla-challenging EVs.
For those seeking something with more speed and luxury, their sister brand Denza might appeal, starting with the first car in its line-up – the stunning Z9 GT.
Clearly borrowing design cues from Porsche's Taycan and Panamera, the grand tourer, with its shooting brake estate styling, was unveiled at the recent Milan Design Week ahead of its European market release later this year.
The Z9 GT, available in both EV and PHEV variants, will be followed by four to six models in Europe, including SUVs and off-roaders, launching over the next few years.
Firefly

From one sister brand to another: Firefly will be the lower-tier, budget option introduced by Chinese EV maker NIO.
Its first UK offering will be a sleek, five-door supermini designed to rival the Renault 5 and Dacia Spring as one of the most affordable electric cars on the market.
Specifications such as power and range have yet to be confirmed, but it will feature NIO's innovative battery-swap technology.

Mini, who? China's answer to the famous hatchback is on the way

Earlier this month, it was revealed that the little-known brand GAC is preparing to take on the mighty MINI with an all-electric hatchback.
The Chinese manufacturer, which has partnerships with Honda and Toyota, is one of the country's largest carmakers.

GAC is gearing up for its UK debut with the stylish Aion UT hatchback, billed as 'China's version of the Mini'.
The compact car certainly bears a resemblance to the iconic Mini and has been designed with city driving in mind.
In terms of size, it's perhaps closer to the Volkswagen ID.3, with its interior space being remarkably well-utilised.
The Aion UT is expected to launch in the UK at a price point just above £20,000, making it significantly cheaper than the £30,795-rated ID.3 and roughly on par with the MG 4 EV and the Renault 5.

It's not all about China, as Renault's new urban mobility brand is entering the fray to challenge the UK's favourite quadricycles – the enduring Citroën Ami and the charming Micro Microlino.
The Mobilize Duo, a spiritual successor to the cult-favourite Twizy, reportedly has a 100-mile range with its larger battery version, while a van variant—called the Bento—provides additional cargo space at the rear.

Another NIO-owned brand is set to arrive in the UK in the coming months, offering an affordable EV that could give Tesla a run for its money.
The luxurious Onvo L60 coupe-SUV is expected to hit showrooms soon, with a particular emphasis on value as it aims to undercut Tesla's hugely popular Model Y.
The L60 prioritises interior space, with NIO claiming the model's short overhangs maximise cabin room and that 'with ingenious storage design, every occupant can bring along their own luggage'.
It's also significantly more powerful than the £46,990-rated Model Y, featuring a 900V electrical architecture capable of ultra-rapid charging.
Yangwang

The curiously named Yangwang, like Denza, is linked to BYD – but with an added touch of prestige.
Yangwang specialises in large, luxury SUVs, such as the Yangwang U8, a rugged off-roader with a surprising party trick: it can float in water for up to 30 minutes.

Cadillac have chosen the two F1 stars they want to sign for 2026
Team principal Graeme Lowdon is said to have settled on the two Formula 1 drivers he wants to sign for Cadillac ahead of their debut season in the sport next year Formula 1 newbies Cadillac are said to have decided which drivers they want to lead their charge on track in their debut season. The American outfit will become the sport's 11th team when it debuts next March at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. With just one year to get everything in place, team principal Graeme Lowdon has plenty on his plate from hiring staff to setting up manufacturing processes and designing their first ever F1 car. Plus, of course, he must hire two drivers to get behind the wheel of those machines next season. During a recent podcast appearance, Lowdon offered seven names as he shed some light on the decision process. Mick Schumacher, Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Perez, Felipe Drugovich, Frederik Vesti, Arvid Lindblad and Colton Herta were the drivers he mentioned as he discussed Cadillac's options. And it appears he has narrowed down his options further by choosing his two preferred driver options. Lowdon told Mirror Sport earlier this month that he would prefer "experienced" options and he seems to have stuck to that. Speaking on F1 TV ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, correspondent Lawrence Barretto was speaking about the situation of Bottas who is a man in demand. Back at Mercedes as a reserve this year after losing his Sauber race seat, the Finn is wanted by Alpine but also seems to be a leading candidate for Cadillac. "The more likely landing spot for him is Cadillac," said Barretto, who also revealed the name of the other driver in pole position for a seat. "I hear that they haven't got any contracts done, not even any ahead of terms, but Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas are the two drivers that they want at that team. "It's just a case of them going through the motions with it. It might be some time until we find that out. Obviously, there is still some time for that to change, but that's where we're looking I think. "That's where I think it's going, which makes sense because Valtteri could maybe use the Alpine interest to maybe get a better deal. They want experience, and those two drivers offer that in bags." Both drivers are multi-race winners throughout their long F1 careers. Bottas won 10 races over five seasons as team-mate to Lewis Hamilton during his first spell with Mercedes, while Perez is a six-time race winner himself, five with Red Bull after his maiden success while still at Racing Point. Should Cadillac end up contracting those two racers, it will be a tough pill to swallow for Zhou Guanyu. The Chinese racer, now reserve at Ferrari, is also looking for a way back onto the grid and may have been expecting to be a front-runner, given Lowdon was previously a member of his management team.

Get off that Porsche 911 configurator! New V8 Mercedes Concept AMG GT Track Sport is coming
The Mercedes-AMG division might be looking more heavily into electric power than ever (as evidenced by the 1,341bhp AMG GT XX concept), but the new Concept AMG GT Track Sport shows just how important internal-combustion engines remain to the brand. Teased officially for the first time, the Concept AMG GT Track Sport is based on the second-generation AMG GT sports car, which arrived in 2023. Although only a concept, we suspect it'll pave the way for a new halo car within the AMG GT line-up. In fact, Mercedes has suggested as much by saying the concept 'provides a preview of a possible expansion of the GT series with a V8 engine'. So far with the current AMG GT we've seen a 2.0-litre four-cylinder 43 model with 416bhp, and several V8-powered versions in the form of the GT 55, GT 63 and the 803bhp plug-in hybrid GT 63 E Performance. The Concept AMG GT Track Sport will likely spawn a replacement for the AMG GT Black Series or GT R Pro, as the most hardcore iteration of Mercedes' Porsche 911 GT3 RS rival. Advertisement - Article continues below Our dealer network has 1,000s of great value new cars in stock and available now right across the UK. Find your new car now… Despite the cloaking of this model, it's possible to ascertain a few key visual elements. We can clearly see this version is wider and lower, with a big splitter at the front and a huge swan-neck rear wing that wouldn't look out of place on a grid of GT3 race cars. Using what we suspect to be a more potent iteration of the 603bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 in the GT 63 Pro, Mercedes-AMG says the Concept AMG GT Track Sport will set 'new standards and record times', with the latter potentially a Nürburgring lap time attempt. The brand has form here, with the old AMG GT Black Series still third in the all-time standings. If you're a fan of Mercedes-AMG, then why not head over to the Auto Express marketplace where you'll find great deals on used AMGs, from the A 35 hot hatch up to the AMG GT? It's not yet been revealed when and where the Concept AMG GT Track Sport will be officially unveiled, although the Munich Motor Show in September would seem likely.

Germany's biggest carmaker suffers £1.1bn hit from Trump tariffs
Donald Trump's tariffs have dealt a €1.3bn (£1.1bn) blow to Volkswagen after the German car giant's portfolio of luxury brands suffered a drop in sales. Marques such as Porsche and Bentley have been hit by the US president's sanctions on foreign vehicles, which impose a 27.5pc tax on cars imported from Europe. Britain has struck a deal with Mr Trump to reduce the tariff to 10pc, but the larger penalty remains in place for the European Union, which is still locked in talks with the White House. On Friday, VW said the tariffs added €1.3bn to its costs in the first half of 2025 and that it could add billions more still, because there was no guarantee of a deal between Washington and Brussels. Oliver Blume, the carmaker's chief executive, said: 'We cannot assume that the tariff situation is only temporary. 'We are counting on the European Commission and the US government to reach a balanced outcome on the tariff issue.' VW's luxury brands have been hit the hardest by the levies, results published on Friday showed. Profits in the company's 'progressive' stable of marques, which includes Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley, halved in the first six months of the year, while the 'sports luxury' segment – which mainly consists of Porsche – tumbled by more than two thirds. That was after Porsche sales fell by 11pc to around 135,000 cars. 'High uncertainty' VW warned: 'There is high uncertainty about further developments with regard to the tariffs, their impact and any reciprocal effects.' This gloomy outlook has led to the company slashing its prediction for 2025 sales. It now expects no change from last year, compared to an earlier forecast of 5pc growth. The blow from tariffs comes at a difficult time for VW, which is already carrying out a major restructuring to cope with the transition to electric cars. It is cutting tens of thousands of jobs across the group and even contemplated shutting factories in Germany as part of the shake-up. At the same time, VW and other Western carmakers are haemorrhaging market share in China, where domestically made electric vehicles and hybrid manufacturers such as BYD are becoming increasingly dominant. These Chinese rivals are also embroiled in a cut-throat price war at home. The turmoil has been particularly painful for VW, which previously relied on China for one third of its sales and a substantial portion of its profits. As recently as 2019, the German giant controlled 20pc of the country's car market, but that has since fallen to 15pc.
