Pahang out to be fearless David against Goliath in Cup final
In a dramatic Malaysia Cup final, the Elephants came from behind to force a 2-2 draw and triumph in a nerve-racking penalty shootout, winning 5-3. It was their last appearance in the final – until now.
Fast forward to 2025, the two sides are set to clash once again tonight at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil (9pm), but the stage and stakes have changed dramatically.
JDT are now the undisputed giants of Malaysian football. With an astonishing 11 consecutive Super League titles and a slew of domestic records shattered, they have redefined the meaning of dominance.
Led by head coach Hector Bidoglio, their squad are stacked with quality, not just to conquer Malaysia but to make waves across Asia.
Pahang, meanwhile, had a tougher road. They finished eighth in the 13-team Super League and endured an inconsistent campaign.

While JDT are the Goliath of this final, the Elephants will be hoping to reprise their role as the fearless David.
The Southern Tigers boast star power across the pitch. Brazilian forwards Bergson Da Silva and Heberty Fernandes have each scored six goals in the tournament, terrorising defences with clinical finishing and flair.
On the wings, Arif Aiman Hanapi is a constant menace, while Uzbek-born Eddy Israfilov marshals the backline with composure and class.
Pahang, however, face a major blow. They'll be without two of their top attacking threats –Liberian striker Kpah Sherman, suspended after picking up three yellow cards, and Argentine winger Manuel Hidalgo, who's ineligible as he's on loan from JDT.
Despite these absences, head coach Fandi Ahmad has been busy in training, testing different line-ups to cope with the challenge.
His game plan is expected to be pragmatic, solid at the back and disciplined in structure, hoping to catch JDT off guard.
Defenders Adam Nor Azlin, Aleksandar Cvetkovic, and Stefano Brundo will be key.
They'll need to be at their absolute best to contain JDT's firepower and keep Pahang in the game. The team have shown grit and resilience in their tough path to the final, the qualities they'll need to pull off the biggest shock of the season.

Brunei, Kuching set for FA Cup fireworks
PETALING JAYA: Brunei's return to the Malaysian League comes with an immediate test – a clash against fellow Borneo side Kuching City in the FA Cup round of 16. The match is among the headline fixtures of the knockout stage after the draw on Monday. It would be an exciting affair, as Kuching City, led by the charismatic Singaporean tactician Aidil Sharin, boast some top talents like Ramadhan Saifullah and Daniel Amier Norhisham. As for Brunei, they are building a solid team, with Indonesian star striker Ramadhan Sananta one of the players to watch in the domestic scene. Another exciting fixture features Melaka taking on Penang, with both clubs having made headlines recently by signing experienced names to bolster their squads. Defending champions JDT will begin their title defence against UM-Damansara, while Selangor, last season's runners-up, are set to face university side Malaysian University. The other semi-pro club, Bunga Raya, will take on Sabah. Elsewhere, Negri Sembilan will visit Police at the Selayang Municipal Council Stadium, and two-time winners Terengganu will clash with Immigration. Meanwhile, Kelantan, eager to bounce back from a tough league campaign, will host Kuala Lumpur in what could be a close contest. For the first time, the round of 16, quarter-finals, and semi-finals will be played over two legs, raising the stakes and strategic complexity for all involved. Eight top-ranked teams from the 2024/2025 Super League season - defending cup champions Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), Selangor, Sabah, Kuching City, Terengganu, Kuala Lumpur, Police, and Penang - received automatic qualification to the round of 16 and have been seeded. They will begin their campaigns as away teams. The remaining eight teams include three newcomers – Melaka, Immigration, and Brunei alongside two Super League bottom sides, Negri Sembilan and Kelantan, and the three semi-pro outfits. These clubs will host the first legs of the round of 16. As history stands, Selangor and Kedah remain the most successful clubs in FA Cup history with five titles each. Pahang and Kuala Lumpur have three titles, while JDT, the reigning champions, boast four. Other past winners include Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Negri Sembilan with two titles each, and Sabah, Sarawak, Penang, Johor, and Lions XII, all of whom have lifted the trophy once. The round of 16 will kick off on Aug 16, with the final scheduled for December 2025, promising months of high-stakes football and the chance for new stories to be written in Malaysian football folklore.

Elvis-Enrique make history with Malaysia's best synchro finish at worlds
SINGAPORE: New diving duo Elvis Priestly Clement and Enrique Harold Maccartney put on a respectable display by finishing seventh in the men's 10m platform synchro final at the World Aquatics Championships on Tuesday. The Malaysian pair scored 374.70 points after six dives — the country's best-ever finish in the event at the world meet. Previously, Bryan Nickson Lomas-James Sandayud held the record with a 10th-place finish at the 2005 Montreal edition, a feat later matched by Ooi Tze Liang-Chew Yiwei in Kazan, Russia, in 2015. China's Cheng Zilong-Zhu Zifeng struck gold with 429.63 points, narrowly beating Russia's Nikita Shleikher-Ruslan Ternovoi (428.70). Americans Carson Tyler-Joshua Hedberg took bronze with 410.70. Earlier in the day, Elvis-Enrique booked their spot in the final after finishing sixth in the preliminaries with 378.36 points. While they missed out on a medal, it was still a commendable effort from 18-year-old Elvis, who made his debut at the world meet and now shifts focus to the men's 10m platform individual event on Saturday. In the pool, Andrew Goh finally got his campaign underway in the 50m breaststroke, finishing 47th overall with a time of 28.21s — a performance clearly impacted by illness. The 20-year-old was forced to withdraw from the 100m breaststroke on Sunday after coming down with a fever. "Obviously not too satisfied, definitely not my best," said Andrew. "I fell sick on the first day, had a fever… four days of no swimming. It took the power and strength out of me. "I'm disappointed, but there's always another worlds. You can only come back stronger." In the men's 800m freestyle, Khiew Hoe Yean finished 22nd in the heats with a time of 8:08.62, missing out on a place in the final. Arvin Shaun Singh, Ananda Lim and Jayden Tan will be in action on Wednesday.
