HC seeks govt reply on nods for resort in proposed tiger park
The high court of Bombay at Goa on Tuesday called for a response from central and state authorities in a petition challenging permissions, approvals, and work orders issued for the construction of a tourist resort on the Surla plateau in the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary, which is to be notified as a tiger reserve.
In July 2023, the court directed state to notify the sanctuary and adjacent sanctuaries as a tiger reserve following recommendations from the national tiger conservation authority under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, Goa Foundation submitted to the high court.
The land designated for the resort lies entirely within the core area of the proposed tiger reserve, an ecologically-sensitive region known for its rich biodiversity, including tigers, sloth bears, leopards, pangolins, vipers, and over 300 unique plant species.
Despite the absence of any stay on the high court's directions and the pendency of proceedings seeking contempt action against the state for non-compliance with HC directions, authorities like the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) and Goa Forest Development Corporation proceeded to issue approvals and work orders for the resort.
The project's outlay of nearly Rs 8 crore for permanent structures and an electric fence to exclude wildlife from the resort area further highlights the prioritisation of commercial interests over conservation imperatives, Goa Foundation said.

It is located on land measuring 6,660sqm of Surla village in Sattari, and falls within the core zone of the to-be-notified tiger reserve.
'The tourist resort project's continuation would cause irreversible ecological damage to one of Goa's most sensitive wildlife habitats,' Goa Foundation told the court.
The resort project is being promoted under the label of 'eco-tourism', with a view to developing a Surla waterfall viewpoint and converting it into a 'world-class destination', and has nothing to do with either wildlife or wildlife conservation, Goa Foundation told the court.
Goa Foundation stated that the forest minister and his wife, the chairperson of Goa Forest Development Corporation, have been vehemently opposed to implementing the high court's directions relating to the tiger reserve.

UAE residents plan to save big for summer season travel as tensions in the region continue
As the summer season settles in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), travel climbs up the priority list for Emiratis. Many of them are willing to save well over Dh11,000 (or $3,000) per person for such holidays, according to the new Allianz Partners Travel Index . The travel index claims that as many as 34% of UAE respondents said they were looking to save Dh11,000 ($3,000) or more for those trips. Meanwhile, another 17% said they plan to set aside Dh9,200 to Dh11,000 to execute their travel plans, according to a Gulf News report. The Allianz Travel Index also projected that many UAE residents are emphasising travelling abroad during the year. This becomes crucial as global travel experiences a shaky phase due to the Middle East tensions triggered by the Israel-Iran conflict. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo The conflict had led to cancellations of across-the-board service on regional routes by the airline. The Allianz survey, however, revealed that the Middle East remains among the top destinations for inward travel. 'Recent tensions in parts of the Middle East may lead some travellers to adjust or delay certain plans,' an Allianz spokesperson said. 'But outbound travel from the UAE is still expected to be driven by strong demand for leisure, family visits, and business travel. We continue to closely monitor global developments to support travellers with timely information, flexible protection options, and peace of mind wherever their journeys take them,' the spokesperson further stated. Live Events The fliers and holiday goers are taking out travel insurance more than that in the past, even when their end destination visas do not require them to do so. Travel insurance comes in handy whenever fliers face flight delays, sudden health issues, etc. It is also pertinent to mention that they don't come into play when airlines announce cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances, such as conflict breaking out.

Delhi-Jaipur In 3 Hours: Trial Run On Expressway Link Begins
Jaipur: The trial run on the Bandikui-Jaipur Link Expressway, connecting the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway to Jaipur, started on Wednesday. The journey from Jaipur to Delhi will now take just 2.5 to 3 hours, offering a faster and smoother travel experience. The trial run started at 8 a.m., and no toll will be levied during this trial period of ten days. The ultramodern expressway is undergoing quality checks and facility testing through the trial runs to identify and rectify any shortcomings before toll collection officially begins in the coming days, said officials. On the first day, the expressway was opened directly for traffic. Additionally, the Khuri Interchange has been made operational to manage traffic coming from the Manoharpur-Kauthun highway. If all goes smoothly, traffic from other interchanges will also be allowed on the expressway within a day or two. The 67-kilometre-long, four-lane access-controlled expressway stretches from Bandikui in Dausa district to Jaipur in Rajasthan and is nearly complete. Vehicles will be permitted to travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h on this modern roadway. Impressively, construction was completed ahead of schedule. Once fully operational, the expressway will significantly reduce travel time and will reduce the journey from Bandikui to Jaipur to just 25-30 minutes, compared to the previous duration of over an hour, which will eventually reduce travel time from Jaipur to Delhi and so on. Furthermore, with its link to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, travel time from Gurugram to Bandikui will be reduced to just three hours. Other tracks which will be connected on the Expressway include Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Manoharpur-Kauthun Highway (via Khuri Interchange) and additional interchanges which will be opened soon, depending on trial success. "All preparations for toll collection are complete. As soon as we receive the green signal from higher authorities, toll operations will commence," said B.S. Joiya, Project Director, NHAI Dausa Unit. According to officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the 66.91-kilometre-long Bandikui-Jaipur Expressway has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1,368 crore. During the ongoing trial phase, all vehicles except tractors, motorcycles, and other restricted categories will be allowed to pass without interruption. Once fully operational, the new expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time, with the journey from Jaipur to Delhi expected to take just 2.5 to 3 hours. Proposed Toll Rates (for private cars) include Rs 150 for the 66.91 km Jaipur-Bandikui Expressway, Rs 550 to Rs 560 for the full Jaipur-Bandikui-Sohna stretch, Rs 130 for the Sohna-Gurugram six-lane highway and Rs 680 to Rs 690 total toll between Jaipur and Delhi.
