Erik Karlsson-Maple Leafs Link ‘More Than Just Hearsay,' Claims NHL Insider
The Pittsburgh Penguins are actively exploring trade possibilities for star defenseman Erik Karlsson, and his next destination could reignite a longtime rivalry in the Atlantic Division.

According to RG's James Murphy, the Toronto Maple Leafs are interested in the former Ottawa Senators blueliner and have emerged as a potential landing spot for the 35-year-old.
'There's more than just hearsay when it comes to the Leafs and Erik Karlsson right now,' Murphy wrote, quoting an NHL source. 'There's probably going to be salary retained, but the thought that there's some kind of bad blood between Dubas and the Leafs still that would prevent something like this is crazy.'
Karlsson spent nine seasons with the Senators, won two Norris Trophies in that span, and remains popular among fans in Canada's capital.

The Leafs are coming off losing a star of their own in forward Mitch Marner, who departed for the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade just before the start of free agency.
While not a forward, Karlsson's offensive prowess from the blue line could provide some offensive help to the Leafs next season.
Murphy touches on another report linking the Maple Leafs to other potential trade targets, such as New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton, because of his power-play skillset.

The Maple Leafs have around $5.3 million in cap space, which means landing Karlsson's current $10 million cap hit—after the San Jose Sharks retained roughly 13% in his last move—would require Pittsburgh to retain additional salary.

The source told RG that if both sides can agree on financial terms, 'this is a business' and past history between Kyle Dubas and Toronto management 'doesn't matter.'
Karlsson is under contract for two more seasons as part of the eight-year, $92 million contract that he signed with the Sharks in 2019. He appeared in all 82 games last season scoring 54 points, including 11 goals for the Penguins.

Oregon Ducks Land Commitment From 5-Star Nephew of Kobe Bryant
Oregon Ducks Land Commitment From 5-Star Nephew of Kobe Bryant originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks are bringing the Mamba Mentality to Eugene. On Thursday night, 5-star safety Jett Washington, the nephew of the late Kobe Bryant, announced officially that he is committing to the Ducks and joining what is going to be a loaded secondary in Eugene. Advertisement Washington stands at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, and is rated by 247Sports as the No. 18 player in the 2026 class, and the No. 2 safety in the nation. This is a huge commitment for the Ducks, who are hoping to go on a hot streak in the recruiting world over the coming days and weeks. Last week, 4-star wide receiver Messiah Hampton committed to Oregon, and while the Ducks were unable to land 5-star cornerback Brandon Arrington earlier in the day, the addition of Washington is certainly great for momentum. Advertisement Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images On Friday, 5-star safety Joey O'Brien will make his commitment announcement with the Ducks and Notre Dame Fighting Irish among the two favorites, and then on Tuesday of next week, 5-star quarterback Ryder Lyons will decide between the Ducks and BYU Cougars. On top of that, 5-star Immanuel Iheanacho is expected to make his commitment soon, with Oregon at the top of his list as he takes an official visit to Eugene this weekend. While Washington is a young player who won't arrive on campus until this winter, the secondary that he is joining will be among the best in the nation in the coming years. Last recruiting cycle, the Ducks added 5-star CBs Na'eem Offord and Brandon Finney, as well as 4-star CB Dorian Brew, and 5-star safety Trey McNutt. Advertisement Now, with Washington in the mix as well, the Ducks should be among the nation's best when it comes to secondary play in the future. Michigan-Based Universities Dominating Junior Hockey Transfers
High-end draft picks Porter Martone, Malcolm Spence join growing list of junior talent joining Michigan-based universities. The junior hockey landscape has been completely flipped on it's head as of late as the Canadian Hockey League, Comprised of leagues from Ontario, Quebec and Western Canada have changed their rules as naming their players professionals and not allowing them to attend NCAA schools. This was changed this past August and players are taking advantage. Universities all over are tripping over themselves trying to land the top junior talent in the sport and lure them to their school. These teams have far better facilities, money-making opportunities with Name, Image and Likeness Deals as well as bigger and more mature talent than the CHL. The biggest draw for the NCAA is the American college experience that many players would be interested in experiencing rather than staying with a billet family in rural Canada. The biggest story out of the shifting junior hockey world was 2026 top NHL prospect Gavin McKenna leaving the WHL and committing to joining Penn State. Besides losing out on McKenna, Michigan-based universities are dominating this process. The University of Michigan and Michigan State have lead the way in terms of new transfers with top talents like Malcolm Spence and Jack Ivankovic joining the Wolverines while top draft picks Porter Martone and Cayden Lindstrom both agreed to play for the Spartans. The NCAA National Ice Hockey Championship was just won by Western Michigan, who has become a mainstay in the picture for a national title. The recent adds by the other Michigan-based schools will certainly close the gap and make NCAA hockey far more competitive than ever before especially in the state of Michigan. Bookmark The Hockey News Detroit Red Wings team site to stay connected to the latest news, game-day coverage, and player features. Spence was drafted 43rd overall in the second round during this year's draft and is coming off three stellar seasons with the Erie Otters. The Mississauga native put up 177 points through 195 games and will be a instant sparkplug for the Wolverines offence. They'll also get a reliable backstop with Ivankovic, who was drafted with the 58th overall pick in the second round by the Nashville Predators. After two season with the Mississauga/Brampton Steelheads, the 18-year-old posted a 39-17-9 record with a 2.93 goals against average and a .903 save percentage. He played with Team Canada on several occasions and will be an instant difference maker for Michigan. State got the higher end names however with Martone, who was projected to go as high as second overall in this year's draft but was ultimately selected sixth overall by the Philadelphia Flyers. Many expected his move to be to Penn State as they are also making splash adds but the 98-point producer last season instead chose the Spartans. Martone's 191 points through 149 games with the Steelheads make him a blockbuster add. The Spartans didn't stop their as they also added the fourth overall pick in last year's draft with Lindstrom. The BC native will be joining Martone after recording 88 points, including 46 goals and 42 assists, through 102 games with the Medicine Hat Tigers. Lindstrom was sidelined for all of last season with an injury but returned for the playoffs and averaged a point-per-game through four playoff games. Both schools made adds that could immediately make them national title contenders and more junior players are transferring in and out all the time. We could still see more players opt to committing with Michigan schools and could make the state a future force to be reckoned with in the collegiate hockey scene.
