NHL Insider Says Red Wings Leading Race to Land Penguins' Rust

Insider reports indicate the Red Wings being the top contender to land Penguins winger Bryan Rust. The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly selling off what they can from the roster with the only exception being longtime captain Sidney Crosby. One of the teams most valuable assets is winger Bryan Rust. The 33-year-old Michigan native has been a consistent 55-60 point producer and has worked as a top line winger for the Penguins during their dominant run to back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. Detroit is in need of a top-six forward to play alongside Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond with Rust being the possible answer. Early trade chatter has already linked both teams with the Red Wings currently sitting as the top contenders to land Rust, according to Bleacher Report's Adam Gretz. Bookmark The Hockey News Detroit Red Wings team site to stay connected to the latest news, game-day coverage, and player features. Rust is a right-shot winger that has been known to have played both sides of the ice. He could be thrown into a favorable position, similar to his one in Pittsburgh playing with Sidney Crosby, with two elite forwards that can dish him the puck. The homecoming for a kid out of Pontiac would be a great one as Rust grew up being a Red Wings fan. He is coming off a career-best 65 point season, including 31 goals and 34 assists. Over the past two seasons, Rust has developed into a top end forward, averaging just short of 20 minutes a night and posting a 0.91 point-per-game average with 121 through 133 games. His average outranks big name wingers like Matt Boldy, Martin Necas and Seth Jarvis. Rust would be a welcomed addition to a Red Wings lineup on the rise and could add much needed scoring after they finished bottom 11 in offence last season. The move would likely include prospects which the Red Wings have plenty of and due to Rust's age that would limit his years in Detroit would likely mean a return package not being overly damaging to the Red Wings prospect pool. Could Detroit's Carter Mazur Get a Top Six Role? The Red Wings could follow the path of other contenders and use young talent in top six roles. Penguins and Erik Karlsson Reportedly Open to Trade Under Clear Conditions

Penguins and Erik Karlsson Reportedly Open to Trade Under Clear Conditions originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After three consecutive years failing to make the playoffs, the Pittsburgh Penguins face a critical offseason as they'll try to break the skid next season. Advertisement One of the options Pittsburgh has to retool its roster is to find a destination for veteran defenseman Erik Karlsson, who could help the Penguins refresh their aging core. According to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, the 35-year-old defenseman is open to waiving his full no-move clause, but only to join a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. 'My understanding is that Karlsson would be open to waiving to join a contender,' LeBrun wrote. 'That might sound obvious given where the Penguins are — staring down a long rebuild — but he has the hammer via his full no-move, so it's no small consideration.' Karlsson is entering the seventh season of his eight-year, $92 million contract. He carries a $10 million cap hit, and his deal includes a $5 million signing bonus due July 1, which could complicate trade talks. Advertisement LeBrun explained that many teams would prefer to deal for Karlsson after Pittsburgh pays the bonus on the given date, but that would come at a cost for the acquiring team in terms of surrendering draft-pick compensation or forfeiting salary retention. 'The Penguins will be less inclined to trade him after making that payment unless teams pay an extra asset to acknowledge it,' LeBrun said. Reducing Karlsson's cap hit could spark more interest, but for that to happen, the deal might have to be completed before the start of free agency. 'The sweet spot for making Karlsson as attractive as possible would be to turn him into a $7.5 million player,' LeBrun wrote. Karlsson has posted 56 and 53 points in his two seasons with Pittsburgh, appearing in all 164 regular-season games during that span. In February, he competed for Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off. Erik Karlsson-Maple Leafs Link ‘More Than Just Hearsay,' Claims NHL Insider

Erik Karlsson-Maple Leafs Link 'More Than Just Hearsay,' Claims NHL Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Penguins are actively exploring trade possibilities for star defenseman Erik Karlsson, and his next destination could reignite a longtime rivalry in the Atlantic Division. Advertisement According to RG's James Murphy, the Toronto Maple Leafs are interested in the former Ottawa Senators blueliner and have emerged as a potential landing spot for the 35-year-old. 'There's more than just hearsay when it comes to the Leafs and Erik Karlsson right now,' Murphy wrote, quoting an NHL source. 'There's probably going to be salary retained, but the thought that there's some kind of bad blood between Dubas and the Leafs still that would prevent something like this is crazy.' Karlsson spent nine seasons with the Senators, won two Norris Trophies in that span, and remains popular among fans in Canada's capital. Advertisement The Leafs are coming off losing a star of their own in forward Mitch Marner, who departed for the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade just before the start of free agency. While not a forward, Karlsson's offensive prowess from the blue line could provide some offensive help to the Leafs next season. Murphy touches on another report linking the Maple Leafs to other potential trade targets, such as New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton, because of his power-play skillset. Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson (65) skates during Frid-Imagn Images The Maple Leafs have around $5.3 million in cap space, which means landing Karlsson's current $10 million cap hit—after the San Jose Sharks retained roughly 13% in his last move—would require Pittsburgh to retain additional salary. Advertisement The source told RG that if both sides can agree on financial terms, 'this is a business' and past history between Kyle Dubas and Toronto management 'doesn't matter.' Karlsson is under contract for two more seasons as part of the eight-year, $92 million contract that he signed with the Sharks in 2019. He appeared in all 82 games last season scoring 54 points, including 11 goals for the Penguins. Devils predicted to land Norris Trophy defenseman

Could the New Jersey Devils pull of the impossible and pair Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes with his little brothers, Jack and Luke? The Canucks would have to be out of their minds to fulfill a pipe dream that Devils fans have longed for since Luke was drafted in 2021. Advertisement Quinn has established himself among the game's elite blue-liners, winning the Norris Trophy in 2024 and recording 33 goals and 168 points over the last two seasons (150 games). But, it is not completely off the table. Here is what NHL Analyst Mike Johnson had to say about a potential Hughes trio in New Jersey: If there is a path for Quinn to the Devils, his contract would have to play a big role. He has two years left with Vancouver at $7.85 million, and should nearly double that figure on his next contract. The Canucks have had an affinity for drama, highlighted by the Elias Pettersson-J.T. Miller saga that resulted in Miller's shipment to the New York Rangers. Vancouver also took a big step back in 2024-25, missing the playoffs entirely after a 50-win, second-round appearance in 2023-24. Advertisement Should that negative trend continue, Quinn could seek exit options. Why not vie to join his brothers out east? He is also an American, and Canadian markets have historically struggled to retain those players. New Jersey has plenty of issues itself and is far from an ideal on-ice destination for Quinn. However, dangling some top prospects such as Šimon Nemec, Seamus Casey, or even Dawson Mercer, who has not quite panned out for the Devils, could entice the Canucks to blow up the organization and start from scratch. If Vancouver gets even a hint that Hughes wants out, getting something in return could be their only choice.

Scott Morrow ‘going to be really good player' with Rangers, but there's catch: NHL insider

Perhaps the most under-the-radar part of the recent K'Andre Miller trade is that the New York Rangers were able to acquire Scott Morrow, on top of a pair of premium draft picks, from the Carolina Hurricanes. Most of the focus here — and rightfully so — has been on Miller, the 25-year-old top-four defenseman getting traded within the Metropolitan Division, and then signing an eight-year, $60 million contract with the Hurricanes. After that, there's been plenty of talk about the Rangers landing a conditional first-round pick along with a second-rounder in the loaded 2026 draft. Advertisement But no one should overlook the other key part of this trade. Morrow was considered to be Carolina's top prospect in many circles and should turn into a solid puck-moving defenseman in New York's top six sooner rather than later. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman is among those who believe the Rangers got themselves a nice player in Morrow. But he also did sound a cautionary note about the 22-year-old's readiness for big-game duty in the NHL. 'I'm not surprised [the Hurricanes] traded Morrow, they've got a lot of D,' Friedman stated on his 32 Thoughts podcast. 'He's young, he's talented, he's going to be a really good player. He wasn't ready for what they do right now. They have a lot of defensemen back there so I'm not surprised they made that deal.' The catch Friedman referred to was Morrow's five-game opportunity in the Stanley Cup Playoffs this past spring. With Jalen Chatfield sidelined by injury, Morrow was pressed into duty for the entirety of the Eastern Conference Final, a five-game series loss to the Florida Panthers. As the Rangers are well aware, that's tough sledding for even the most experienced of players, and specifically defensemen in this case. Morrow had a difficult time of it, with the Hurricanes outscored 5-0 at 5v5 with him on the ice. However, the underlying numbers weren't terrible. Carolina had an expected goals share of 55.76 percent, per Natural Stat Trick, and out-chanced Florida 23-16 with the rookie out there. Advertisement Of course all of that comes with a grain of salt. Typically, Hurricanes players have solid impressive underlying metrics, based on the team's play style. The eye test against the Panthers wasn't so pretty. Related: Get to know newest Rangers prospect Scott Morrow after trade with Hurricanes Scott Morrow underrated trade acquisition by Rangers David Kirouac-Imagn Images Nonetheless, the Rangers have themselves a really promising defenseman prospect in their fold now. After starring collegiately for three years at UMASS, Morrow had 39 points (13 goals, 26 assists) in 52 games with Chicago of the American Hockey League last season. He didn't look out of place when called up by the Hurricanes; Morrow had six points (one goal, five assists) in 14 NHL games late last season. Advertisement Morrow's got good size (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) and an above-average skill set offensively. His defensive game remains a work in progress. But if he can handle third-pair minutes defensively, Morrow would give the Rangers a really good option as puck-moving defenseman behind Adam Fox, both at even strength and on the power play. If Morrow proves himself ready to go on the right side in training camp, the Rangers could move Braden Schneider to his off (left) side to help form a shutdown second pair with Will Borgen. This trade will largely be deemed a success or failure for each side based on Miller's growth and play. He's the best player in this trade right now — barring New York landing a stud or two with those two picks in next year's draft. 'The Hurricanes were willing to take a bet the Rangers weren't,' Friedman explained. 'The Rangers weren't willing to go long term with Miller. They were only willing to go, I think, a couple of years. Obviously, Carolina was not afraid of that. We'll see how that works long term. Who made the right bet?' Advertisement That's the biggest question right now. But don't discount Morrow being able to tip the scales in New York's favor when it's all said and done. Related Headlines
