Crystal Palace face expulsion from Europa League

Telegraph09-07-2025
Lyon were demoted by French football's financial watchdog (DNCG) in November over the poor state of their finances under Eagle Football ownership. Initial relegation was confirmed last month after a meeting between club owner John Textor and the DNCG. Women's football mogul Michele Kang, who owns Lyon's women's team OL Lyonnes, has been appointed president, replacing Textor.
'Today's decision is the first step in restoring confidence in Olympique Lyonnais and we now return our focus to creating success on the pitch, ready for next season,' the French club said.
The First Chamber of Uefa's Club Financial Control Body had announced it had 'decided to postpone its assessment of the multi-club ownership case involving Olympique Lyonnais and Crystal Palace' pending the Lyon appeal.
Johnson is understood to have paid about £200 million to buy 42.9 per cent of Palace previously owned by US investor Textor. The deal was expected to satisfy Uefa that there are no multi-club issues. It is subject to approval by the Premier League and its owners' and directors' test.
The development takes Textor out of the picture at Palace, leaving chairman Steve Parish and original US investors Josh Harris and David Blitzer to run the club, with Johnson as a supportive partner. Textor had neglected to place his shares in Lyon in a blind trust by the early-March deadline in order to comply with Uefa rules.

Morecambe on brink of being thrown out of National League as final deadline is missed

MORECAMBE are on the verge of being chucked out of the National League. Panjab Warriors were trying to buy the 105-year-old club from owner Jason Whittingham's Bond Group Investments. 1 But tonight it was confirmed that a deal had not been reached. The Shrimps are suspended from football's fifth tier until August 20 over a failure to comply with the league's rules. And if they fail to satisfy National League chiefs, they will be expelled. It now seems likely they will go the same way as Bury and Macclesfield and be forced to reform. Morecambe are set to go out of business in the coming days, with a statement from Panjab Warriors last week saying: "As of Monday, 4th August: The Club is officially shut. " £0 in the bank and no cash on site means operations cannot continue. "Senior staff have taken the heart-breaking decision to stop working after months of holding the Club together under impossible circumstances. "Without an agreement today: The Club will rapidly disintegrate. "Staff and players are leaving - soon there will be nothing left to sell. "Jason Whittingham your legacy is in your hands. "You will be remembered in Morecambe not for your intentions, but for the outcome of today. Do the right thing, stop the suffering." Morecambe were relegated from League Two last season following an 18-year spell in the EFL. They are currently suspended by the fifth tier National League for failing "to meet its financial obligations for the 2025/2026 season". This all comes after the Panjab Warriors had a takeover bid approved by the EFL in June. After the board tried to force through the sale, Whittingham responded by sacking the entire board before later inviting them back. Rugby club Worcester Warriors were expelled from the Premiership under Whittingham's management three years ago.

Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi make transfer decisions amid Arsenal and Liverpool interest

FA Cup holders Crystal Palace have plenty of interests in a couple of their stars ahead of the new season but it appears that the Eagles could actually end up keeping them Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi have not ruled out staying at Crystal Palace despite interest from Arsenal and Liverpool. The Eagles pair were expected to be on the move this summer after the club lifted the FA Cup last season. ‌ Arsenal were eyeing the England winger as a potential wide recruit despite the signing of Noni Madueke from Chelsea. Meanwhile, Liverpool put Guehi on their shortlist as a potential replacement for Jarell Quansah - who completed a £35m move to German side Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer. ‌ Despite the pair having suitors, it is not guaranteed that they depart. According to The Sun, Palace have not received any firm offers for either Eze or Guehi and they are in no rush to cash in on either. ‌ Guehi has just a year remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park and it looks more likely that he could leave for free in just 12 months' time. And should he do that, it could potentially open the door to moves to Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. In the meantime, Eze could also remain in South London despite Arsenal's interest. The wide man is interested in a move to the Emirates but the Gunners are not yet prepared to activate his £68m release clause, which could see them move onto alternative targets. Fresh developments over Eze and Guehi's stances are at odds with chairman Steve Parish's approach last summer after he claimed he was shocked that Eze remained. He also underlined his willingness to do business with the Premier League 's big hitters. "I was really worried from a club point of view of losing Michael and Ebbs in the same window and we didn't have in Ebbs the interest that I thought we would have," Parish told Sky Sports News. "I was astounded. Genuinely astounded. I mean, the guy's just an outstanding footballer, an outstanding person.' ‌ He added: 'We want to be selling to the top clubs, or to clubs like Newcastle who've got great aspirations and have recently been in the Champions League. "So we have to manage all of those things. We won't get really great young talent to come to us if they think they're going to be stuck." "We want to be playing in the Champions League,' Parish said. 'The reality is we don't right now. That's what players want to achieve in their career and we respect that and we respect the fact that sometimes we're going to be a pathway to that." Watch the moment furious Roberto De Zerbi is pulled apart from a Marseille player in training - as the furious Italian tells star to 'call your agent'

Marseille have released the moment their head coach Roberto De Zerbi furiously confronted one of his players on the training ground last season. The former Brighton boss steered Marseille to second place in Ligue 1 in the 2024-25 campaign, sealing a return to the Champions League. Marseille have released a documentary series charting the Italian's first season in charge of the club. The latest episode showed a flashpoint from the season, as De Zerbi and midfielder Ismael Kone were held apart by team-mates on the training ground. Footage showed Kone being dispossessed in training, with an exasperated De Zerbi stating 'Oh my god, when I say reduce the touches, reduce the touches'. 'I can't play, go get a shower,' De Zerbi adds 'Go get a shower Isma, we are Olympique Marseille', as he directed the Canadian international to the changing room. 👀 The training ground altercation between Roberto De Zerbi and Ismaël Koné (23) which led to the Canadian's January departure from Marseille. 🎥 Olympique de Marseille on Youtube — Get French Football News (@GFFN) August 4, 2025 As Kone walks away, De Zerbi is seen shown shouting after the midfielder 'Call your agent, call your agent, he comes here', before repeating the statement. Kone could be seen turning around in response to the comment with De Zerbi shouting 'go inside' as the midfielder responds 'I didn't say anything'. Members of coaching staff and players ran into to stand between Kone and De Zerbi as the row threatened to escalate. Speaking on the documentary, De Zerbi claimed the difference in Kone's level was 'too big' for the midfielder to play for the club. 'He is one of the players with the most potential at Olympique Marseille, but who didn't always behave well, De Zerbi told the documentary. 'Someone who had highs and lows that were too big for a player who is ready for Olympique Marseille.' Kone had been De Zerbi's first signing at Marseille last summer, with the 23-year-old joining in a £15million move from Watford. Just six months after joining, having made eight league appearances, Kone was loaned to fellow Ligue 1 side Rennes. Marseille sporting director Medhi Benatia added 'It was a moment like that Isma knew, what can I say, he knew. He's not a bad guy, he's not a bad guy. 'He arrived at Marseille and I don't think he realised, when he arrived from Watford, Olympique Marseille is not on level two, it is actually on level five. 'Maybe he thought it would be easy, we told him many times 'you need to do more Isma, you need to do more'. And on that day there were a few comments like that, without knowing who was wrong and who was right. After that they argued a bit. 'I was on the side of the pitch and tried to do the same thing, "go to the changing room, come to my office and we'll talk about what you wanted to do". '"You reacted badly, the coach might have spoken to you badly, no worries I am not trying to blame anyone. I have one question, when you turned back, what was it for?" For me it should never go that far.' 'It is a shame, I really like Isma, but unfortunately he didn't understand what Marseille is about'. Training footage also showed De Zerbi approaching Jonathan Rowe, asking the forward whether Kone had been training well. Rowe, who admitted it had been 'one of the most tense moments' of the season, said he offered 'no comment' for fear that he would have also been sent into the changing room. De Zerbi admitted players might have been 'shocked' by the clash, but declared that he was 'used to it' after 30 years in the game. Kone would ultimately score against his parent club on the final day of the season, but his Rennes side were beaten 4-2 by De Zerbi's Marseille. He has since left the club on a season-long loan to Sassuolo, with the Italian club having the option to make the deal permanent.
