Denis Villeneuve to helm next 'Bond' film
Oscar-nominated Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond film, Amazon's MGM Studios said on Wednesday, taking charge of one of Hollywood's most enigmatic spies and longest-running movie series, as per Reuters.
Villeneuve, the Canadian film director and writer, has earned critical acclaim for films such as Sicario, Dune, Dune: Part Two, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival.
He was nominated for Best Director at the 2017 Oscars for sci-fi film Arrival, which starred Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, and for Best Adapted Screenplay for Dune, based on author Frank Herbert's highly acclaimed 1965 novel of the same name, at the 2022 Oscars.
"Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr No with Sean Connery, said Villeneuve said in a statement.
"I'm a die-hard Bond fan," he continued. " To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour. "
The upcoming Bond film will be the first under Amazon's MGM Studios, which took creative control of the film franchise under a new joint venture with longtime rights holders Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli earlier this year. As previously announced, Amy Pascal and David Heyman will serve as producers for the Bond venture.
However, the franchise is yet to name a new lead actor following Daniel Craig's departure after No Time to Die in 2021, which earned nearly $800 million in global box office collections.
Inspired by Ian Fleming's novels, the Bond franchise has spanned over 60 years, grossing more than $7 billion at the global box office, making it one of the most successful ever.
As per Deadline, the Bond directing gig has been the most closely watched in Hollywood ever since Amazon MGM acquired full creative control of the franchise in February.

Henry Golding, reported contender for James Bond role, calls it "every actor's nightmare'
Henry Golding shared his thoughts about the possibility of playing James Bond at the red carpet premiere of The Old Guard 2 in Los Angeles. 'I think that's every actor's kind of nightmare,' Golding told People, referring to taking on the iconic spy role. He noted that while actors may wish to bring fresh energy to a longstanding franchise, they face substantial expectations. 'Maybe I'm just a pussy. I don't know. But I think I would love it so much more if there wasn't that overhanging cultural pressure,' he added. Golding is among several actors under consideration for the next Bond, including Theo James, Regé‑Jean Page, Aaron Pierre, James Norton and Idris Elba. Daniel Craig last portrayed Bond in No Time to Die in 2021. Previous Bond actors include George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Sean Connery. The character was created by Ian Fleming in 1953 and first appeared on screen in Dr. No in 1962. In a related update, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed on June 25 that Denis Villeneuve will direct the next Bond film. Tanya Lapointe will serve as executive producer, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman in producer roles. Villeneuve said he aims to honour Bond's legacy while preparing for future stories, calling the opportunity 'a massive responsibility' and 'a huge honour.' Amazon MGM Studios has not yet named a writer or confirmed casting or a release date for the next film. Golding's remarks highlight the challenge actors face when stepping into widely recognised roles within major franchises like Bond.

Neeru Bajwa unfollows 'Sardaar Ji' co-star Hania
As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan, the cultural fallout has reached the film industry once again - this time with Canadian-Indian actor Neeru Bajwa reportedly unfollowing Pakistani co-star Hania Aamir on Instagram. Reddit and Instagram accounts first observed Hania missing from Neeru's following list. Neeru further appears to have removed all promotional content related to their film Sardaar Ji 3, just hours ahead of its international release on Friday. The Punjabi-language horror-comedy, also starring Diljit Dosanjh, has found itself at the centre of a political and cultural storm. While no official comment has been made by either Neeru or Hania, the move is being widely interpreted as a response to growing criticism in India over the Pakistani actor's inclusion in the film. Industry insiders say the backlash stems from the participation of a Pakistani actress in an Indian production, amid renewed nationalist fervour and diplomatic hostilities following a deadly attack in Pahalgam earlier this year. The criticism, largely driven by right-wing online voices, accused Neeru of "undermining national sentiment" for collaborating with Hania. Gunbir Singh Sidhu, the film's producer, confirmed the decision not to release the film in India was made out of caution rather than compulsion. "There was no restriction from the Government of India or any other institution," Sidhu told reporters. "But given the sensitivity of the situation, we refrained from releasing the trailer in India or organising any promotions." The Film Federation of Western Indian Cinema (FWIC) has gone a step further, calling on the government to revoke Diljit's passport due to his continued association with the project. The statement has sparked criticism from several artists and civil society organisations, who argue the move infringes upon artistic expression and freedom of work. Despite the mounting controversy, Sardaar Ji 3, directed by Amar Hundal, remains set for an extensive international rollout, including screenings in Pakistan, the UK, and Canada - regions with large Punjabi-speaking diaspora populations. The film also marks Hania's debut in Indian Punjabi cinema. In a recent interview with Haroon Rashid on the BBC Asian Network, Diljit had nothing but warm words for the professionalism displayed by Hania on set as the pair worked together in the film. "My experience with Hania was very good," stated Diljit in a short but sweet commendation. "She was professional when we were working. We didn't have that much time together, though." "When this film was being made, the [political] situation was fine," mused the actor-singer, adopting the sanguine, accepting tone of one picking their battles. "When we shot this film in February, everything was fine. But a lot of big things are not in our hands."

Brad Pitt's Los Angeles home burglarised
Burglars broke into Brad Pitt's Los Angeles home on Thursday, ransacking the property and fleeing with stolen items while the Oscar-winning actor was travelling to promote his new racing thriller F1, US media reported. A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told NBC News that a break-in took place at a residence in the Los Feliz neighbourhood around 10:30PM (0530 GMT), without officially confirming who owned the home. Police sources told NBC News and the Los Angeles Times that three suspects climbed over a front fence and broke in through the home's front window before ransacking the location and fleeing with some belongings. The value of the stolen items has not been disclosed. Pitt was not home at the time, as he has been on a global promotional tour for his new movie F1. The 61-year-old actor attended the film's premiere in London this week. The property was purchased by Pitt in 2023 for $5.5 million, according to Variety magazine. Pitt is among the most recent celebrities to have their Los Angeles homes burglarized. About $500,000 of jewellery was allegedly stolen from the home of French striker Olivier Giroud of MLS side Los Angeles FC in a burglary in February. That same month, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's residence was reportedly burglarized. On the work front, Pitt has been grabbing headlines with his Formula One film. Formula One is hoping the film cements the appeal of the Netflix docu-series Drive to Survive that has boosted Formula One's popularity and growth worldwide and particularly in the key US market. "I think there's this perception that Drive to Survive turned America onto F1 but I think there's just so many more people out there that don't know anything about it," said director Joseph Kosinski. "So there's a lot of potential still there."
