A fraudster gained access to the WhatsApp of the vice-chancellor of a deemed-to-be university in the city and sent messages to the latter's contacts demanding money.
In the complaint to the Cyber Economic and Narcotic (CEN) Crime police on Monday, the victim stated that a person called him claiming to be an executive of a courier company. The caller sent a link containing a 10-digit number and asked the victim to dial it to speak to the courier boy for the delivery of an article. Soon after the link was pressed, messages were sent through his WhatsApp to his contacts seeking money.
The victim said he took steps to prevent misuse of his WhatsApp account and then lodged a compliant with the CEN.
On Saturday, the principal of a PU college reported about a similar fraud. Following messages by fraudsters, two friends of the principal transferred ₹45,000 each to the fraudster, the principal said in his complaint.

Rajasthan man sentenced to six years in Coimbatore online investment fraud

A Judicial Magistrate Court in Coimbatore on Tuesday sentenced a 24-year-old man from Rajasthan to six years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with an online investment fraud involving ₹47.4 lakh. The accused, P. Surendra Dewal, a native of Deediya Khurd village in Nagaur district, was arrested by the Coimbatore City Cyber Crime Police on April 22, 2025. He has remained in judicial custody since the time of his arrest. The prosecution concluded within a month. According to the police, the complainant was added to a WhatsApp group titled G3 Hem Securities Exchange Group, where unidentified individuals impersonating investment advisors persuaded him to invest in online block trading. He was instructed to create a Hem Premium account and transfer funds to multiple bank accounts under the guise of high-return investment opportunities. The complainant transferred a total of ₹47,40,000, of which ₹40,00,000 was deposited in two instalments directly into the accused's account. This transaction constituted the first layer of the fraudulent scheme, the police said. Judicial Magistrate-IV T.R. Arun Kumar awarded the accused two years of imprisonment each under Sections 61(2) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 66D of the Information Technology Act. The sentences are to run consecutively. The court also imposed a fine of ₹2 lakh.

Son of Assam constable among nine detained in Gurugram on suspicion of being ‘illegal Bangladeshis'

An Assam Police constable has alleged that his son is among the nine Muslims of Bengali origin who have allegedly been detained in Gurugram since Sunday on suspicion of being undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants. Sannat Ali, a constable in the Assam Industrial Security Force, told Scroll that his son, 23-year-old Ashraful Islam, is a resident of Barbala village in Barpeta district. He had gone to Haryana on July 11 after completing his college exams, said Ali. Upon reaching Gurugram on July 13, Ashraful Islam started working at a construction site in Sector 10A. 'At the same time, the police started picking up Muslim workers to nab Bangladeshis,' alleged Ali. 'Many of them were released after document verification.' He added that his son and eight others from Barpeta were picked up by the police on Sunday morning when they were working at the construction site. Ali said that his son had submitted his voter ID card, school certificates, Aadhaar card and PAN card, which were not accepted by the police. 'They call them illegal Bangladeshis,' Ali alleged. He added: 'We have sent more documents like my service identity card and voter cards. Senior police officials have contacted me this morning. They are working to release him.' An Assam Police official confirmed to Scroll that they have spoken to Ashraful Islam's family and their counterparts in Haryana. Rakibul Islam, the worker's brother, said that Ashraful Islam had sent a WhatsApp message on Sunday morning, saying that the police had come to the site to verify the workers' documents. 'So we have sent the documents on WhatsApp and the documents were already with him as well,' Rakibul Islam said. 'That's the last communication. The WhatsApp status shows that he saw the text but his phone was soon switched off. We did not have any clue about his whereabouts till Monday.' An assistant commissioner of police-rank in Gurugram West told Scroll that the action was taken as per the Union home ministry's guidelines requiring the persons' identity documents to be verified. The police official did not mention the number of workers who had been detained. 'The process to verify their documents is going on,' the official said. In May, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs directed the states and Union Territories to verify the credentials of persons suspected to be undocumented migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. Earlier, 26 Bengali-speaking persons from Assam were allegedly detained in Gurugram on July 13 and July 14 on suspicion of being undocumented Bangladeshi migrants. They were released after their documents were verified. Since the Pahalgam terror attack, Bengali-speaking migrant workers have been rounded up by the police in several states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party and asked to prove that they are Indian citizens. In some cases, Indian workers were sent to Bangladesh. On July 21, the All Assam Minorities Students' Union, a group representing the interest of Bengali-origin Muslims in the state, wrote to the chief ministers of Assam and Haryana alleging that residents of Lower Assam, who are mostly daily wage labourers, were being detained by Haryana Police in several areas of Gurugram under the 'false assumption and accusation that they are foreigners'.

UP: STF, agencies to keep close watch on RO/ARO exam to ensure fair conduct

Lucknow, Jul 22 (PTI) The Special Task Force (STF), intelligence agencies, and police in Uttar Pradesh have been asked to prevent any malpractice and ensure fairness and transparency in the examination to recruit review officer (RO) and assistant review officer (ARO) scheduled on July 27, an official statement said. The exam will be held in all the 75 districts of the state on July 27 in a single shift from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. More than 10.76 lakh candidates are expected to appear for the exam for which 2,382 centres have been set up across the state. Each district magistrate has been appointed as nodal officer to monitor all the arrangements and take quick decisions as and when needed, the statement said. Officials said the STF has been specifically directed to monitor the sensitive exam centres identified prior to the test. The state government has also issued strict instructions to track and monitor individuals with a history of disrupting the integrity of exams, including known cheating syndicates and repeat offenders, the statement said. Those previously involved in exam-related crimes and currently out on bail will be kept under special surveillance, it said. The STF will also keep a close watch on social media platforms, including open fora as well as private messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram, which are often exploited to spread rumours or coordinate illegal activities. Dedicated teams will monitor coaching institutes during the exam period, and any suspicious activity will be immediately reported to the concerned agencies for quick action, the statement said. Police forces will be deployed at every exam centre to maintain law and order and conduct strict frisking of candidates to ensure no banned items are carried inside. Armed guards and senior officers will be present throughout the process – from taking the confidential exam papers out of the treasury to dispatching answer sheets after the exam. If any candidate or person is found using unfair means during the exam, strict legal action will be taken under the relevant sections of law. A senior officer will be appointed for seamless coordination between the agencies on the day of the exam, while the police commissioner, SSP and SP in every district will directly oversee the arrangements, the statement said.
