Halftime entertainer Red Panda injured during WNBA performance
Niu has delighted basketball fans in numerous NBA, college basketball and WNBA venues since her debut in 1993. Red Panda rides a seven-foot-tall unicycle while catching and balancing a large number of metal bowls on her head during her act.
Reporters for MinnPost and ESPN confirmed that Niu took a hard spill, falling from her unicycle during Tuesday's performance. The popular performer laid still for some time, cradling her left wrist before being taken off the court in a wheelchair.
Once called "the best halftime act in basketball" by Dime Magazine, Niu retired in 2013 to support her father while he battled cancer. She practiced occasionally during this timeframe and suffered her first wrist injury.
After she mourned her father's death due to esophageal cancer and helped her mother deal with an illness, Niu made her return in 2015 as she revealed in a "Sports on Earth" interview that she couldn't stay away.
"I missed it," Niu said. "The crowd. The energy. The challenge. From my heart, I feel like this is a part of my home. Although I lost my father, I still have this part of my life with me, just like before."

Yainer Diaz hit a home run and Framber Valdez recovered from a wobbly start as the visiting Houston Astros followed a blowout victory Friday with a 6-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday. Shohei Ohtani made his fourth start of the season for the Dodgers and went two scoreless innings on 31 pitches. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski (4-3) followed by allowing five runs (four earned) over 4⅔ innings. Zack Short had a two-run double in a four-run third inning as the Astros had no problem finding more offense one day after an 18-1 victory in L.A. Valdez (10-4) gave up four runs on seven hits over six innings with seven strikeouts to hold off the Dodgers, who lost consecutive games for the first time since June 6 and 7. Houston's Josh Hader finished the eighth and completed the ninth as well for his 25th save. Mookie Betts and Miguel Rojas each hit home runs for the Dodgers, who had won 15 of 18 games before Houston arrived in town. The Dodgers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, getting a home run from Betts in the first inning, his 11th, before Rojas made it 2-0 in the second on an RBI single. Betts' home run was his second in three games after not hitting one in 20 consecutive contests. With Ohtani no longer on the mound in the third inning, the Astros went to work on Wrobleski. Short belted a two-run double to tie the game before Cam Smith and Christian Walker each had RBI singles to complete the four-run frame. Houston made it 5-2 in the fourth inning when Diaz hit his 11th home run of the year to right-center. Rojas brought Los Angeles within a run in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer off the top of the wall in left-center, his fourth of the season. In the seventh, Betts led off for the Dodgers with a hit to left field that got past the Astros' Cooper Hummel and rolled to the wall. Betts, though, was thrown out trying to take third base on the miscue. The Astros padded their lead to 6-4 in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to left field by Victor Caratini.

Mets' pitcher Kodai Senga makes Double-A rehab start
New York Mets right-hander Kodai Senga made progress toward his return to the starting rotation after pitching into the fourth inning of his Double-A rehab start on Saturday. Senga, who has been out since straining his right hamstring while covering first base on June 12, struck out four and walked two across 3⅔ innings for Binghamton. He threw 68 pitches and gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits against Hartford. The Mets lost 14 of the next 17 games after Senga landed on the injured list. New York rebounded, however, and has won four straight, including two against the Yankees. Senga, who has gone 20-10 with a 2.53 ERA and 281 strikeouts in three seasons with the Mets, could reportedly return to the big-league club just before the All-Star break. A 2023 All-Star, Senga is 7-3 in 13 starts this season with a 1.47 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 73⅔ innings.

Mbappe on target as Real Madrid downs Dortmund to reach Club World Cup semis
Young striker Gonzalo Garcia scored his fourth goal of the Club World Cup and Kylian Mbappe his first as Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 on Saturday to set up a mouthwatering semifinal against European champion Paris Saint-Germain. Garcia, 21, put Madrid ahead from close range early on a hot afternoon at MetLife Stadium just outside New York City, and Fran Garcia then doubled his club's lead before the midway point in the first half. Dortmund never seriously threatened a comeback before a remarkable late flurry of activity, with Maximilian Beier pulling one back in the 93rd minute and Mbappe getting Madrid's third with a stunning overhead kick. Serhou Guirassy then completed the scoring with a penalty after Real's Dean Huijsen was sent off, before the full-time whistle finally blew. "Everything was going under control with the result, not conceding much, but the last 10 minutes (were) kind of crazy, when we lost a little bit our shape, our intensity ... but overall a good 80 minutes and the last 10 minutes to improve," Real coach Xabi Alonso told broadcaster DAZN. Alonso's side finds itself in the semifinals despite Mbappe still not having started a game at the tournament. The France superstar, who did not play during the group stage due to illness, will now hope to start for the first time when Real takes on his old club in a fascinating last-four showdown at the same venue on Wednesday. "It will be a great challenge for us to face PSG, but let's take positives from today and move on for the next one," Alonso added. Whoever emerges victorious from that match will be the favorite to win the inaugural edition of FIFA's expanded competition, with Chelsea playing Fluminense in the other semifinal. Saturday's match, watched by a crowd of 76,611, was a repeat of the 2024 UEFA Champions League final, which Real won 2-0. But while the Spanish club needed two late goals to claim victory then, this time it seemed to have got the job done early after Alonso sprang something of a surprise tactically, ditching his three-man central defense for a back four. Real should have scored more goals before halftime, with Bellingham — deprived of the chance to face his brother Jobe who was suspended — firing just wide after a nice move by Vinicius Junior. The latter sent a shot wide when he tried to surprise Gregor Kobel from the edge of the box, while Aurelien Tchouameni cracked an effort off the woodwork just past the hour mark, albeit there was an offside earlier in the move. Dortmund could have made a real comeback attempt had halftime substitute Beier scored at the other end just before that, although its hopes were briefly raised late on. Beier made it 2-1 three minutes into time added on as he controlled a poor clearance and fired past Thibaut Courtois. Mbappe, who came on for Bellingham midway through the second half, then scored his 44th club goal since the start of the season with an overhead effort at the back post from a Guler cross. Then Guirassy was brought down at the other end, leading to defender Huijsen being sent off. Guirassy scored the penalty to make it 3-2 with his 38th of the season. "It is a deserved win for Real Madrid," said Dortmund coach Niko Kovac. "We showed our qualities and it is not a failure if you go home after a defeat against them."
