McCutchen and Reynolds hit game-breaking doubles as Pirates pull away for 9-2 win over Mets

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Andrew McCutchen and Bryan Reynolds hit consecutive two-run doubles during a six-run eighth inning Saturday as the Pittsburgh Pirates pulled away for a 9-2 victory over the New York Mets.
The Pirates led 3-2 when Ke'Bryan Hayes singled in a run before McCutchen and Reynols broke open the game. Hayes also had an RBI single in a three-run second that put Pittsburgh ahead 3-1.

The game was delayed for 89 minutes during the top of the second with the Mets leading 1-0.
The Pirates lifted starter Bailey Falter after the wait. However, the Mets stuck with Paul Blackburn when play resumed and he gave up five straight singles to start the bottom of the second.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza removed Blackburn (0-3) after the fifth hit. Mendoza didn't stick around much longer, as he was ejected in the fourth by plate umpire Roberto Ortiz for arguing balls and strikes.
Braxton Ashcraft (2-0) relieved Falter and allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings.
The Pirates will try to sweep the three-game series Sunday. The Mets have lost 12 of their last 15 games.

McCutchen, Hayes, Joey Bart and Nick Gonzales each had two hits for the Pirates. New York got two hits apiece from Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo.
The Mets struck quickly when Francisco Lindor led off the game with a double and scored on Juan Soto's single. They cut their deficit to 3-2 on Nimmo's RBI single in the fifth.
Key moment
The Mets put the leadoff man on base in the eighth, trailing 3-2, but Caleb Ferguson got Tyrone Taylor to hit into a double play and Brett Baty to ground out.

McCutchen played in his 2,200th career game and is the active MLB leader.

The series concludes Sunday with Mets RHP Frankie Montas (0-0, 0.00 ERA) making his second start of the season, facing RHP Mike Burrows (1-2, 4.45).

QUIMPER, France (AP) — Mavi Garcia became the oldest rider to win a stage at the women's Tour de France on Sunday. The 41-year-old Spaniard clinched the second stage on Sunday with a solo breakaway. She looked back twice before realizing she would not be caught and then raised her arms aloft at the finish line. Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten was 39 when she won a mountain stage on the 2022 women's Tour, organizers said. Garcia attacked with about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) left on the 110.4- kilometer hilly stage through Brittany and ending in Quimper. She looked like being caught near the end as the peloton loomed large behind her, but she kicked in and won by three seconds. Dutchwoman Lorena Wiebes was second and Kim Le Court of Mauritius took third place in a sprint to the line. Le Court did just enough to take the race leader's yellow jersey from cycling great Marianne Vos, who won Saturday's opening stage in a close finish and placed fifth on Sunday. Le Court and Vos have the same overall time after two stages, but Le Court now leads overall courtesy of her better combined stage finishes over the first two days. Stage 3 on Monday is a flat stage for sprinters, ending in the western city of Angers. The nine-stage race ends on Aug. 3. Throughout the offseason and now continuing into training camp, it has become clear that Cam Ward is the future of the Tennessee Titans. Known for his leadership qualities and work ethic on top of his athletic prowess, Ward has been everything and more than what the Tennessee Titans expected when they selected him with the first overall pick in April. Ward has come into Nashville and won over both the locker room and the organization with his infectious attitude. This isn't just coming from the local media or those that cover the Titans on a daily basis; it has become clear to national NFL insiders as well, with the latest being Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network. As Jeremiah points out, Ward gets into the facility early, before the coaching staff. While this isn't anything new, as it was reported back in June during minicamp, some new details on how this film will work did come out during an interview with Ward for the network. Ward is not alone in his extra work at 5:30. He is usually joined by a group of receivers led by Calvin Ridley, which includes Chimere Dike, Elic Ayomanor, and Xavier Restrepo, in an attempt to play his best football and have the offense on track early in the season. With Ward and his group of young receivers putting in the extra work, it is easy to see why they have been one of the more exciting units to watch early in training camp. The interview also highlights the increased leadership role Ridley is assuming this offseason, a trend that has been emerging more frequently during player interviews. That dedication bodes well for the Titans' offense, which is looking to surprise teams in 2025.
