Chelsea could land huge transfer windfall from big-money Liverpool deal
Liverpool's summer spending spree is set to continue but their latest big-money move could also bring a tidy financial benefit for their fellow Premier League side Chelsea
Liverpool's move for Marc Guehi could have a knock-on effect for Premier League rivals Chelsea. Mirror Football understands the Blues included a 20 percent sell-on clause when they allowed Guehi to join current club Crystal Palace, meaning an Anfield switch would net them a tidy sum.
Guehi is expected to leave Palace this summer rather than leave for a free when his contract expires in 2026. A move to Anfield would see Premier League champions Liverpool continue a spending spree which has already gone past £200million.
More than half of that sum can be attributed to the British record move for Florian Wirtz. Arne Slot's side have also added to their back line, with Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong on board, while Caoimhin Kelleher and Trent Alexander-Arnold are among those to have departed.
Palace, who paid £18m for Guehi in 2021, value the centre-back at around £70m. Liverpool are unlikely to go that high, with a £40m sum suggested as a more likely middle-ground, and this would still see Chelsea net £8m.
A move for Guehi could also allow Liverpool to approve an exit for Jarell Quansah. The academy graduate, who played 25 times in all competitions, has been linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen.
A windfall for Chelsea could allow them to make further additions to the squad this summer. They have already been busy, getting deals over the line in time for their Club World Cup campaign in the United States.
Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr all joined in time for the tournament, as did Mike Penders after a deal for the keeper was agreed last year. Enzo Maresca's side opted against a move for loanee Jadon Sancho, though, paying a penalty fee to send the winger back to Manchester United.
Chelsea finished second in their Club World Cup group and are due to face Benfica in the round of 16. The Portuguese club topped their group after a win over Bayern Munich, and Maresca is keen not to underestimate them.
"Now we're in a knockout game and in a knockout game anything can happen," he told reporters. "That is not just for us, it's for every club, and the players are aware that at this moment the team that makes the most mistakes will be the team that are back home the day after.
"The most important thing is the way we prepare ourselves. It's very complicated at this moment, for many reasons, to see games where the difference between the two teams is big. They are more or less very close, and it's a game where the details are going to make the difference."

EXCLUSIVE Paul Ince is arrested and charged with drink driving after former Man United and England star crashed into a central reservation
Paul Ince has been charged with drink driving. The 57-year-old former England captain was arrested after a black Range Rover smashed into a central reservation in Cheshire on Saturday. He was subsequently charged with drink driving, bailed and will appear before Chester Magistrates on Friday. A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: 'At around 5pm on Saturday 28 June, police were called following reports of a collision on Chester High Road, Neston. 'The incident involved a black Range Rover which had collided with the central reservation barrier. 'Officers attended the scene and arrested a 57-year-old man. 'Paul Ince, of Neston, has since been charged with drink driving. Ince has been bailed to appear at Chester Magistrates' Court on Friday 18 July.' The incident took place close to Heswall Golf Club, from where Ince has previously posted content on Instagram. Ince, a former Manchester United, Liverpool and West Ham star, was the first black man to captain England. He won 53 caps for his country and is perhaps best remembered for his starring role in a dogged goalless draw with Italy which sent Glenn Hoddle's side to the 1998 World Cup. Ince came through the ranks at the Hammers before a then big-money move to United in 1989. After spending six, trophy-laden years at Old Trafford, he was transferred to Inter Milan before returning to England to play for United's rivals, Liverpool. Further stints at Middlesbrough and Wolves followed before Ince brought the curtain down on a playing career which saw him win two Premier Leagues, two FA Cups and a League Cup, among other silverware. After successful spells in charge of Macclesfield and MK Dons, he went on to manager clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Notts County and Blackpool. His last role was as manager of Reading, a post he left in 2023.

Players' union accuse Gianni Infantino of overseeing 'MASSACRE' of player welfare from his 'ivory tower' as they launch scathing attack at Club World Cup
French players' union the UNFP has criticised the Club World Cup, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino accused of overseeing a 'massacre' of player welfare. The UNFP claimed that Infantino, watching on from his 'ivory tower', isn't concerned about the impact that the extra games will have on the physical and mental health of players. As reported by the Associated Press, the UNFP said in a statement: 'The incongruity of the situation is not lost on anyone, except, of course, Gianni Infantino and his flatterers. From the height of his ivory tower, which he parades around the world, the FIFA president is not bothered by the fate that the international calendar reserves for the game's leading players. 'His (Infantino's) Club World Cup proves, to the point of absurdity, that it is urgent to stop this massacre game. He flouts the physical and mental health of players for a few more dollars.' Infantino has received much criticism regarding the Club World Cup, with this year's edition expanded to include 32 teams. There have been widespread concerns about the impact that involvement in the tournament will have on players. The comments from UNFP follow on from former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's criticisms of the Club World Cup. Klopp, who now works as the head of global soccer for Red Bull, described the tournament as 'the worst idea ever in football'. Speaking to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, he said: 'The Club World Cup is the worst idea ever implemented in football. 'People who have never had anything to do with day-to-day business are coming up with ideas. 'I fear that next season players will suffer injuries they've never had before. If not, then it'll happen at the World Cup or afterwards.' Many of the leading clubs in world football, such as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, are taking part in the competition, with concerns being raised about how players will be affected in the long term given their lack of rest this summer.

Update: Date: 2025-06-29T19:00:00.000Z Title: Preamble Content: Hello and welcome to live coverage of Flamengo v Bayern Munich in Miami Gardens. When the Club World Cup draw was made, these two looked set to meet in the last 16 – but it was supposed to be Bayern who topped their group, not Flamengo. We should have known, based on the simple face that tournament wallcharts never, ever, ever play out as expected. Flamengo's 3-1 win over Chelsea ultimately earned them top spot in Group D, while Bayern – who had already qualified for the knockout stage – slipped to second after losing their final Group C game against Benfica. Tonight's winners will face Paris Saint-Germain, who plugged Inter Miami 4-0 earlier today. Kick off 9pm GMT, 4pm in Miami.
