Why do Masters winners and members get green jackets? The tradition, explained

Watching the Masters on Sunday and suddenly wondering why all the members and winners of the tournament at Augusta National wear those same green jackets and the origin story behind it? We've got you covered.

The green jacket might be one of the best non-trophy trophies in all of sports, right?
It's wearable bragging rights, one that you can put on for any event, from a day at Wimbledon (Sergio Garcia) to heading to a local Chick-fil-a (thanks, Patrick Reed).
But what's up with the whole green jackets thing? Let's help you out and dive in all things green jackets:
Why have Augusta National members wear green jackets at all?
There's an origin story here, via PGA.com:
The first story is Augusta National co-founder and one of golf's greatest champions, Bobby Jones, attended a dinner at 12-time Open Championship venue Royal Liverpool in England where club captains were wearing matching jackets to denote their position. Jones liked that.
The other story is that Augusta National co-founder Clifford Roberts figured it was a way to identify club members as 'reliable sources of information' to visiting non-members — and to let waiters know who got the check at dinner.
In 1937, that's when the green jackets started rolling in.
Why are the jackets green at Augusta?
Specifically, the color is Pantone 342 per Golfweek. The story I found behind this came from Today's Golfer:
So when Augusta National opened in January 1933, [Bobby] Jones floated the idea to business partner Clifford Roberts. The only issue was the colour. Red, yellow and even 'Georgia peach' were all considered but quickly dismissed. Then, while out walking Roberts' eye was taken by the leaves underpinning the many azalea bushes found on the former Fruitland Nursery site. Known as verdant green, the choice was made and a legend was born.
When did the Masters winners start getting green jackets?
Back in 1949, Sam Snead got one when he won his first Masters at Augusta.
How do the golfers get jackets in their exact sizes?
They get a temporary one that's approximately their size before they're given a customized fitting after their win.
Do you get more than one green jacket if you win multiple Masters?
Nope! Back in 2019, when Tiger Woods won, we learned this one. You can bring the green jacket home for a year after your win, but then it has to be brought back and worn only at Augusta.
And if you win again, you get your same jacket to put on after your victory.

Rybakina outlasts Yastremska to reach WTA Montreal quarter-finals
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina beat Dayana Yastremska 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 on Saturday to book a quarter-final clash with Marta Kostyuk at the WTA Canadian Open in Montreal. Kazakhstan's Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion who won her first title in more than a year at Strasbourg in May, was slowed by nine double faults. But she ultimately had enough to get past Ukraine's Yastremska -- who was coming off a straight-sets victory over eighth-seeded American Emma Navarro. Yastremska fell behind an early break in the first set, but took advantage of Rybakina's early serving woes to break back, and broke again to take the opening set in a game that Rybakina had led 40-0. Rybakina, seeded ninth, bore down after that, breaking Yastremska twice to take the second set. Another untimely double fault cost her a break in the third, but she broke Yastremska for the second time in the set to take a 6-5 lead and held on to seal it on her fourth match point with a high backhand volley winner. She'll face another Ukrainian in Kostyuk, who came from behind to beat American McCartney Kessler 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Kostyuk reached the quarter-finals of WTA-1000 events at Qatar and Madrid this year, but she arrived in Montreal having not won a match since reaching the fourth round in Rome. "I hadn't won a match in three months before this tournament -- I didn't have a lot of confidence coming into it," she admitted, thanking her team for "sticking with me". Top-seeded American Coco Gauff headlined the night session, taking on 18-year-old Canadian wild card Victoria Mboko. Gauff, the reigning French Open champion, has been erratic in clawing her way into the fourth round with a pair of three-set victories and will be looking to step it up against the home hope, who has thrilled fans in her first main draw appearance in the event. Mboko is in the round of 16 in a 1000-level event for the first time. She took Gauff to three sets on the clay courts of Rome earlier this year and said she was "really excited" for another shot at the American. "She's the number one seed of this tournament," Mboko said. "I'm going to really expect a hard fight. It's always great to play such incredible athletes and incredible players like her." The winner of that match will play either China's Zhu Lin or Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who are both seeking to reach the quarters of a 1000 level event for the first time. Zhu, once ranked as high as number 31 in the world, has dropped to 493rd after missing the last five months of 2024 and another three months earlier this year with an elbow injury. bb/js

Juan Jesus: ‘Napoli must never let our guard down again'
Brazilian defender Juan Jesus has praised Napoli's defensive improvements and revealed how head coach Antonio Conte has instilled a winning attitude into the side. Speaking to Radio CRC, with quotes via Alfredo Pedulla's website, Jesus said that 'If a team defends as a unit, it becomes much easier for the back line. We take responsibility for the mistakes we made two years ago, we are not hiding, but those mistakes helped us grow and taught us that we can never let our guard down again.' Jesus played 15 times in Serie A for Napoli last season and wore the captain's armband in the club's 3-1 Coppa Italia defeat to Lazio. Blake Burke scheduled for Knoxville return after minor league promotion
Former Tennessee baseball player Blake Burke was promoted to Double-A on Saturday. Milwaukee assigned him to Biloxi from High-A affiliate Wisconsin. His promotion to Double-A will also mark a return to Knoxville Aug. 5-10. The Smokies will host Biloxi for a six-game series at Covenant Health Park. Burke was selected by Milwaukee with the 34th overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft. He played for the Vols from 2022-24, appearing in 182 games, including 159 starts. Burke recorded a .332 batting average, 50 home runs, 136 RBIs, 152 runs, 80 walks and 17 stolen bases. Tennessee won a national title in 2024, two SEC Tournaments (2022, 2024), two SEC regular-season championships (2022, 2024) and made two College World Series appearances (2023-24) during his career with the Vols. The series opener between Knoxville and the Shuckers is slated for 7 p.m. EDT on Aug. 5 at Covenant Health Park.
