Only 60% of desilting work of PWD drains done, deadline extended to June 30
During an inspection of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department's control room on June 10, Verma said the Delhi government completed 90 per cent of desilting work for 76 drains under the (I&FC) and around 50 per cent of work on PWD drains.For better monitoring, the city has been divided into 35 zones where desilting is currently underway.According to the PWD, 308 waterlogging points were identified in Delhi in 2023. Based on new data shared by the traffic police, a total of 445 such points have been identified this year, of which 335 fall under the responsibility of the PWD.Additional pump operators are being deployed in three shifts round-the-clock at each vulnerable point, to further address the waterlogging issue in the city.Must Watch

Stinking Water Sinks Road In Ghazipur
New Delhi: At first glance, it appears to be a stagnant river. On closer inspection, it's a dirty, foul-smelling and disease-ridden waterlogged stretch from Ghazipur mandi to EDM Mall along National Highway 9. The portion of the road, completely ignored by civic authorities, is a marker of the severity of Delhi's waterlogging problem, and of how poorly it is managed. For more than a week, the stretch has disappeared under deep, putrid water — a dark mix of sewage and rain snaking like a canal between buildings, buses and markets. Even the potholes have ceased to be an issue for now — they are no longer visible under the submerged stretch. The water has shown no signs of receding for over 10 days now. Rickshaws have vanished from the stretch from the CNG pump to the fruit and vegetable market. Vehicles sit half-submerged, abandoned mid-route, even as bikers cautiously navigate the broken remnants of a divider, wary of a breakdown. Many TOI spoke to expressed worry about their health, saying the Ganga pipeline, which supplies water to nearby housing societies, runs close to the flooded area. According to the residents, they have filed complaints with the Public Works Department (PWD) regarding the issue. Sources from PWD, however, clarified that the stretch from Ghazipur mandi to EDM Mall is divided between two civic agencies — PWD and DDA. According to PWD, there is no issue of waterlogging in its stretch. The civic body said even during the last rainy spell, the road under its jurisdiction was free from flooding. When contacted, there was no immediate response from DDA. Vilakshana Dawra, a resident, said, "There is waterlogging right next to our building, and it keeps getting worse. The entire stretch leading to the CNG pump has been blocked for nearly a month. Earlier, people could at least access it, but it's now shut due to flooding." "We can't cross the road — our society gate opens directly onto it — and many of us are unable to reach our offices. The area stinks, mosquitoes have multiplied, and now dirty water is seeping into our building. The basement is filling up, and even our water tanks are at risk of contamination," Dawra said, adding, "We have tried everything. If someone could intervene, we would be truly grateful." While the CNG pump near the mandi has been forced to halt its operations, entry and exit routes to the main road have become impossible to cross. Local businesses have been wrapping up early, or not opening at all. Near Migsun Homz in Ghaziabad's Kaushambi, which lies just off the stretch, the situation is just as grim. The mosquito problem has exploded in the area, with the stagnant water becoming a breeding factory. "The water has entered our society's basement. We are afraid for our families and our homes," said Abhishek Kumar, president of the apartment owners' association, Migsun Homz. "We appealed to the authorities, but no action has been taken so far. We hope someone in the media pays attention." With the monsoon season only beginning, the residents are praying for relief from the civic authorities, but bracing for the worst. NHAI, BRO told to map landslide zones, deploy machinery as Char Dham yatra resumes, ET Infra

Garhwal division commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey said, "The 24-hour ban on the Char Dham yatra has been lifted. However, district officials along the travel route have been instructed to halt vehicles in their respective districts based on weather conditions." Meanwhile, public works department (PWD) secretary Pankaj Pandey wrote to employees of the department, National Highways Authority of India NHAI ) and Border Roads Organisation ( BRO ), asking them to follow certain guidelines during the monsoon instructed the authorities concerned to identify landslide-prone areas and make necessary arrangements such as earthmovers and deploy manpower at these locations to promptly clear roads blocked by landslides. "All executing agency officials/employees will coordinate with the local administration and leave for personnel will be approved only after the district magistrate's approval in emergency situations. All executing agency officials/employees will be technically available (via satellite phone, mobile, etc.) and will share relief work through email, WhatsApp groups, departmental portals, etc.,"the letter stated. The letter also mentioned that narrow roads and weak bridges should be identified, and measures for their safety or repair should be taken in advance by the competent authority. "It has come to notice that all engineers/personnel remain in their offices/divisional offices, whereas it is necessary to be in the field during the monsoon during the monsoon period, all officers and employees will remain in their respective work areas, i.e., assistant engineers/additional assistant engineers/junior engineers will stay in their allocated area routes," the letter stated. This year over 35 lakh pilgrims have undertaken the annual pilgrimage so far. Out of these, 13 lakh pilgrims have gone to Kedarnath, 10.8 lakh to Badrinath , 5.6 lakh to Gangotri and 5.5 lakh to the Yamunotri shrine.
