CM sets September as deadline for completing road repairs
Addressing the regional review meeting held at Thellakam here on Thursday, which evaluated development activities in Ernakulam, Idukki, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts, Mr.Vijayan said that rates for contractors in connection with the Chief Minister's Local Road Rebuilding Project (CMLRRP 2.0) were revised much earlier and the roads will completed in length previously agreed upon. He directed the Chief Secretary to issue clear guidelines on the matter.
The review also took stock of progress under the LIFE Mission. While 4.5 lakh houses have been completed, the Chief Minister called for the speedy construction of the remaining units.
Concerns were raised about unoccupied flats built for fisherfolk under rehabilitation housing projects. With some beneficiaries unwilling to accept the houses, he said the idea of reallocating them to other eligible groups could be explored.
Mr. Vijayan also stressed the need for rigorous monitoring of water sources to identify the presence of coliform bacteria. Though schools were equipped with labs to test well water affordably, progress has been limited. He called for joint evaluation by the education department, local bodies and district collectors.
The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that the accommodation of migrant workers is safe, particularly during the monsoon. He flagged the resurgence of previously eradicated diseases as a serious concern and urged close monitoring.
He also called for district-level efforts to ensure migrant children attend school. Pending school infrastructure projects dating back to 2016 should be completed with urgency, he added.
Highlighting the importance of anti-drug initiatives in schools, the Chief Minister said exercise and cultural activities must be included in campaigns. While some controversies had arisen, he maintained that no policy shift was needed, he asserted.

Ensure central schemes reach eligible beneficiaries: Kumaraswamy
Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy on Saturday instructed officials to ensure that centrally sponsored schemes reach eligible beneficiaries in a transparent manner. Presiding over the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting here on Saturday, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that the district had received 24% excess rainfall this year, resulting in crop losses. He directed officials to prepare a detailed report on the extent of damage to facilitate compensation for affected farmers. MP for Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar directed officials to identify and repair accident-prone black spots on national highways to enhance road safety. Lakshmikanth Reddy informed the meeting that 95% of land acquisition for the Mysuru–Kushalnagar NH-275 project had been completed. On the Mysuru airport runway expansion, around 240 acres of land had been acquired, with utility shifting pending, he said. Officials said that 82% of works under the Jal Jeevan Mission had been completed, while the Swachh Bharat Mission targets had been fully achieved. Works under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act were progressing well, and were expected to meet the targets by March 2026. Under the National Health Mission, 98% progress has been achieved, they said. The meeting was informed that solid waste management units have been established in every gram panchayat. This year, 53% of sowing has been completed, and farmers were being encouraged to cultivate horticulture crops as alternatives to tobacco. MP for Chamarajanagar Sunil Bose, MLA for Hunsur G.D. Markapur (Prakasam district): Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan announced that no single party in the coalition government is superior, but their combined strength is like a fist, to fight others for the welfare and development of the Andhra Pradesh state. He underscored the strong understanding and mutual respect within the NDA leadership and advised the leaders and supporters at all levels to resolve differences through discussion for the common goal of public service. After paying floral tributes to Alluri Sitharama Raju on his birth anniversary, Deputy Chief Minister and panchayat raj and rural development minister Konidela Pawan Kalyan laid the foundation stone for the works of the drinking water supply project under Jal Jeevan Mission, with a budget of Rs 1,290 crores, at Narasimhapuram of Markapur mandal in Prakasam district on Friday. Ongole MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, district in-charge minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, social welfare minister Dr Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, local MLA Kandula Narayana Reddy, in-charge collector Ronanki Gopala Krishna, and other public representatives, state and district level officials were present. As part of the project, water from the Pula Subbaiah Veligonda Project will be supplied to 578 villages in 18 mandals of 7 Assembly constituencies including Yerragondapalem, Giddalur, Markapuram, Kanigiri, Kondepi, Kandukur, and Darsi, through a treatment plant, 19 sumps, 31 overhead balancing reservoirs, 334 overhead tanks and pipelines for over 5000 kilometers. Highlighting the Veligonda project as the lifeline for the western Prakasam, where the public experiences acute drinking water scarcity and fluoride contamination, suffering from health issues like bent knees and spines, he questioned the decades-long neglect of the backward district by the government. He accused the former YSRCP government of mismanaging funds allocated by the central government for the Jal Jeevan Mission. He said that despite Rs 26,000 crore being sanctioned by the Narendra Modi-led Central government between 2019 and 2024, the previous state government reportedly spent only Rs 4,000 crore, much of which was wasted on pipes without establishing proper water sources, rendering the investment largely futile. He requested the public to allow him 18 to 20 months for completion of the drinking water supply project, considering the availability of funds consistently. The Deputy CM said the dialogues in the cinemas are only for the fun of the audience, and are not to intimidate the opponents in real life. He slammed YSRCP for alleged rowdyism and goonism, and challenged the threats of cutting throats. He said that they will not allow YSRCP's dream of coming into power again. He announced that the NDA government in the state is not interested in vengeful politics, but it will punish the wrongdoers. He accused the previous regime of widespread land grabbing, including temple lands, forest lands and vacant lands, and illegally registering them. He affirmed the NDA government's commitment to recovering the encroached lands and protecting temple properties. The Jana Sena Party president attributed the successful launch of the JJM project to the trust placed by the people in the NDA coalition. MPs to jointly push for central fin aid
T'puram: The state will move forward with legislation to address the rising human-wildlife conflict, the state govt informed MPs at a high-level meeting convened by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday. A draft bill is currently under consideration by the state's law department, it was revealed in the meeting. The MPs' conference, held ahead of the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, deliberated on a range of pressing issues concerning the state from disaster relief and infrastructure development to financial concerns and environmental conservation. A key decision at the meeting was to take a united stand for the approval of central financial assistance based on the Post-Disaster Need Assessment submitted by the state. The assessment seeks Rs 2,221.10cr for Meppadi in Wayanad district and Rs 98.10cr for Vilangad in Kozhikode, both severely affected by past natural calamities. The MPs also agreed to jointly press the Centre to reinstate Section 13 of the Disaster Management Act, which was previously removed, and to seek urgent amendments to Section 11 of the Wildlife Protection Act. These changes would empower state govts to grant region-specific relaxations based on local needs and help secure central compensation for wildlife-related damages. On railway development, the CM urged the MPs to follow up on the memorandum he had submitted directly to the Union Railways minister. Specific demands include approval for the Thalassery–Mysuru and Nilambur–Nanjangud rail lines, a new line from Kanhangad–Panathur–Kaniyur, advancement of the Angamaly–Erumeli–Sabarimala railway project, and sanctioning of third and fourth railway lines in the state. The CM also called for allocation of funds to extend the Kochi Metro from SN Junction to Tripunithura Metro station. Vijayan underlined the need for coordinated intervention of MPs on financial matters. He flagged the reduction in Kerala's borrowing limit under the guarantee redemption fund, the Rs 965cr shortfall in IGST settlement, and the need to raise the borrowing ceiling to 3.5% of the state's GSDP. He urged the Centre to exempt loans taken by KIIFB and the state pension company from the borrowing cap and allow additional borrowing equivalent to the state's share in the Jal Jeevan Mission outside the current borrowing limit. The meeting also discussed proposals to link the Global City component with the GIFT City (Global Industrial Finance and Trade City) initiative and to seek timely central support for completing connectivity infrastructure. The MPs agreed on the importance of securing viability gap funding for the establishment of logistics parks under the Kochi–Bengaluru industrial corridor. Health-related demands raised at the meeting included the need to expedite the allotment of an AIIMS in Kerala, increase the premium under the Vay Vandana Yojana pension scheme and release the arrears due to the state under the National Health Mission. There was also a demand to grant official health worker status to ASHAs, who form the backbone of the state's community health system. Other crucial issues discussed included retaining the BrahMos missile production facility in Kerala, granting 'point of call' clearance to foreign airlines operating out of Kannur International Airport and the ongoing development of national highways across the state. The MPs also sought upgrades for the Kottapuram–Kozhikode stretch of National Waterway-3, declared as an extension of the national waterway, to meet national standards.
