Properly audited companies boost foreign investors confidence: Hardeep Singh Puri
New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday highlighted the importance of proper auditing of companies in India, stating that it boosts confidence among foreign investors and contributes to the country's economic growth. Puri emphasised that as India's business interface with the rest of the world grows, it is crucial for companies to be properly audited to attract foreign investment. 'As the business interface with the rest of the world grows, the fact that our companies are properly audited and that gives the foreign investors confidence and domestic also,' Union Minister said, speaking to the media on the sidelines of ICAI Foundation Day today in New Delhi. During the event, Puri highlighted India's economic growth, LPG coverage and oil and gas reforms in the country. The Minister emphasised India's success in attracting global investment, with USD 748 billion of foreign direct investment inflows between 2014 and 2025--an increase of 143 per cent over the previous decade--and the expansion of source countries from 89 to 112. 'In the past eleven years, India has risen from the eleventh to the fourth largest economy in the world. Our GDP has more than doubled--from USD 2.1 trillion in 2014 to USD 4.3 trillion in 2025,' said Minister Puri. 'We have recently overtaken Japan and are poised to become the third-largest economy by 2030, overtaking Germany,' the Minister remarked, highlighting the nation's resilience during global headwinds and the critical role played by bold policy reforms, extensive social welfare schemes, and sound financial management. Under the flagship social initiatives, Puri noted, over 27 crore citizens have been lifted out of multidimensional poverty, nearly four crore houses have been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and 15.4 crore rural households now enjoy piped water through the Jal Jeevan Mission. Ayushman Bharat has expanded health coverage to over 70 crore individuals with a Rs 5 lakh insurance benefit, reinforcing India's commitment to inclusive development, the Minister added. Landmarks in policy reform, including the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, Production-Linked Incentive schemes, the Goods and Services Tax, Direct Benefit Transfers, and the elimination of over 25,000 compliances and 1,400 obsolete laws, have strengthened the nation's business landscape. The transformation in tax administration underscores India's evolving financial culture: annual Income Tax Returns filed grew from 3.6 crore in FY 2013-14 to 8.5 crore in FY 2024-25, with 95% processed within 30 days. Each return, each rupee of tax collected, translates into tangible benefits--LPG connections for mothers, medicines for the poor, electricity for rural homes, pensions for the elderly, and employment opportunities for youth. Puri also spotlighted the Ministry's flagship Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which has delivered over 16.5 crore LPG connections since 2014, empowering women, reducing indoor air pollution, and promoting public health. The growing market capitalization of Oil & Gas PSUs--nearly doubling to Rs 8.79 lakh crore since 2014--reflects the sector's robust performance and the trust of investors. (ANI)

Govt gives clean chit to PHE minister, closes probe in 10 days
Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh govt closed an internal inquiry into a complaint alleging irregularities involving Rs 30,000 crore allocated under the Jal Jeevan Mission and involving Public Health Engineering (PHE) minister Sampatiya Uikey within 10 days. The PHE Department described the allegations as "baseless and without evidence." Former MLA Kishore Samrite filed the complaint, and the PMO forwarded it to Chief Secretary Anurag Jain, who passed it to Principal Secretary P Narhari's office. He subsequently moved it to Chief Engineer Sanjay Andhavan (ENC), who initiated an inquiry. The state govt issued an official release stating that the inquiry was closed due to lack of evidence. Meanwhile, insiders say that engineer-in-chief (ENC) Sanjay Andhavan, who took cognizance of the matter, faces internal pressure for his 'proactive' handling of a politically sensitive issue. He reportedly faces heat within the department for acting quickly on a complaint involving a sitting minister. The internal inquiry concluded in less than 10 days found that the complaint relied solely on RTI documents and lacked verifiable proof of financial misconduct. The department called the allegations "fabricated, baseless, and devoid of facts." Not convinced by the findings, Samrite approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court, seeking a CBI investigation. He alleged that PHE minister Sampatiya Uikey received Rs 1,000 crore in commission from Jal Jeevan Mission funds and accused a former ENC of siphoning off Rs 2,000 crore through his accountant. Additional allegations include the withdrawal of Rs 150 crore by the executive engineer in Betul without executing any work and the submission of fake completion certificates for over 7,000 projects. Samrite also demanded an audit of nearly 27,000 utilisation certificates submitted by engineers across the state as proof of completed projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission. He claimed that "all the certificates are fake," and were created to falsely justify fund disbursement. He claims that despite the magnitude of the allegations, the state govt did not escalate the matter beyond the departmental inquiry — and moreover had this inquired by a junior-level officer instead of transferring it to a different agency. Attempts to reach minister Sampatiya Uikey for comment were unsuccessful. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!

Madhya Pradesh gives clean chit to minister Sampatiya Uike accused of financial irregularity; Congress demands CBI probe
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], July 1 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Public Health Engineering (PHE) has said that the complaint against state minister Sampatiya Uike over bribery allegations is baseless and motivated by malicious intent. Madhya Pradesh Jansampark department said that it has examined all the facts and observed the departmental procedures, and it found that the complaint is fabricated, baseless, and motivated by malicious intent. Uike was accused of committing serious financial irregularities in the Jal Jeevan Mission's fund provided by the Government of India to the State. Former MLA Kishore Samrite has accused Minister Uike of taking a 'commission' of Rs 1000 crore from the fund of Rs 30,000 crores released by the Centre for the Jal Jeevan Mission to the state and has written to the Prime Minister's office about it. Minister Uike has claimed that the allegations against her are baseless and wrong and that she is being unnecessarily harassed in the matter. 'I am completely right (innocent). I have no problem with an investigation into the matter. I am an adivasi woman from a poor working class and today I am here to serve the public. Our chief minister will give a reply to it and he is aware of the situation. The way I am being harassed and this is absolutely wrong,' Uike said. Meanwhile, the Congress has termed it as serious corruption, demanded Uike's resignation of the minister as well as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the matter. 'There are headlines in the newspaper that it is a matter of commission of Rs 1000 crore. Be it a Jal Jeevan Mission or a tap water mission, there is nothing but corruption. BJP forgets about moral responsibility? If there is any morality in the state government, then they should take the resignation from the minister. Also today, I will write a letter to the Prime Minister myself for a CBI investigation into the matter,' said Jitu Patwari, Madhya Pradesh Congress President. 'The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mohan government in the state has become synonymous to corruption. All ministers are engaged in looting. There is not a single minister who can claim they are clean. It is not just a matter of Rs 1000 crore irregularity. The minister should resign, Patwari said. The PHE department shared a post on his official handle X and wrote, 'The complaint was found to be baseless in the factual report of the Chief Engineer. The allegations levelled against the Public Health Engineering Department Minister, Sampatiya Uike are fabricated and baseless.' (ANI)
