Taiwan jails 10 people for spying for China
TAIPEI: A Taiwanese court on Monday jailed a coach of Chinese yo-yo and nine others for spying for Beijing, as Taipei seeks to counter China's influence on the self-ruled island. The two sides have been spying on each other for decades, but analysts say the threat to Taiwan is greater given that China has threatened to use force to bring Taipei under its control. Taipei District Court convicted nine defendants of violating the National Security Act for 'developing an organisation for China', while another was found guilty of illegal currency exchange. The ringleader Lu Chi-hsien was a coach for 'diabolo' -- Chinese yo-yo -- who was recruited during a visit to China, prosecutors said in November when he was indicted. Lu was 'persuaded and enticed' by a Chinese 'intelligence agent' and was paid to 'develop an organisation, collect intelligence and military data', the court said in a statement. Lu recruited five former or then-active military and coast guard personnel, who went on to convince a dozen others to join them and hand over military documents. The ringleader was paid by Tian Xi, the only Chinese national among the defendants, who handled around NT$194 million ($6.6 million). He was given an eight-year prison term, while Lu was jailed for 10 years and six months, and the others were sentenced to between three and six years. They can appeal the ruling. Aside from the five recruited from the military and coast guard, those convicted included three friends of Lu, who moved a safe house, provided bank accounts, and digitised and delivered military documents to him. The number of people prosecuted for spying for Beijing has risen sharply in recent years, with retired and serving members of Taiwan's military the main targets of Chinese infiltration efforts, official figures show.

KUALA LUMPUR: A bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Italian counterpart is among the highlights of his upcoming first trip to the European nation. "Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will undertake a working visit to the Republic of Italy from July 1 to 3, 2025. This visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, marks the Prime Minister's first visit to Italy. "On July 3, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Chigi Palace. "The meeting will provide an opportunity for both leaders to take stock of the current state of Malaysia-Italy relations and explore avenues to further strengthen cooperation, particularly in the fields of economy, defence technology, and energy. "The two leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the Asean-Italy Development Partnership, Asean-European Union Dialogue Relations, and the situation in the Middle East," Wisma Putra said in a statement on Monday (June 30). It added that the Prime Minister will highlight Malaysia's priorities and Asean's efforts in addressing regional and global challenges. "The Prime Minister will also officiate the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable on July 2, 2025, which will bring together Malaysian and Italian industry leaders to explore trade and investment collaboration. "He is also scheduled to meet leaders of the local Muslim community and engage with members of the Malaysian diaspora in Italy. Malaysia and Italy enjoy longstanding and multifaceted relations, underpinned by strong economic ties, growing trade and investment, and people-to-people exchanges," it said. Indonesia is the world's largest nickel producer and it is trying to capitalise on its vast reserves, with a 2020 export ban spurring a domestic industrial boom of the key metal used in EV batteries and stainless steel. The EV battery project will include a $4.7 billion investment on the eastern island of Halmahera and a $1.2 billion investment in West Java, energy minister Bahlil Lahadalia said in a speech alongside President Prabowo Subianto. "According to my calculation, it won't take long, in probably between five to six years we will be able to reach energy self-sufficiency," Prabowo said at a groundbreaking ceremony in Karawang, West Java. Bahlil said the Halmahera complex will focus on mining, smelting and production of cathodes which are a key component in rechargeable batteries. The West Java complex will focus on battery cell production, the minister said. The two politicians did not say when the megaproject was slated to be operational, but Indonesian officials have said a CATL plant in Halmahera would open in March next year. Alongside CATL, the Halmahera complex is backed by China's Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt and Indonesia's state-owned Antam. Climate Rights International (CRI) and Greenpeace Indonesia this week issued a call for greater assurances from Jakarta that measures were in place to protect the surrounding environment at the bigger complex in eastern Halmahera. Environmental group Mining Advocacy Network (Jatam) said in a statement Saturday that Jakarta was "chasing vague economic growth while consciously ignoring the people's scream" to end damage to the environment and residents' livelihoods. Halmahera, a once-pristine island in the Maluku archipelago, has seen environmental damage increase as operations have grown at a large industrial park that hosts the world's largest nickel mine. A CRI report this month warned the Indonesian government was allowing environmental damage to go unchecked around the Weda Bay mine and the industrial park that hosts it. An AFP report last month detailed how the home of the nomadic Hongana Manyawa tribe was being eaten away by mining operations there. - AFP
