MCMC investigates individual over racist social media post in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken action against an individual for uploading racially offensive content on social media. The commission confirmed that a statement was recorded and a mobile phone along with a SIM card were seized to assist in the investigation. The offensive post is believed to be linked to the recent appointment of a new Lieutenant General in the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF). Authorities stated that the content contained racial remarks that could provoke unrest and threaten national unity. 'Following this incident, the individual was called in to give his statement and assist in the investigation,' MCMC said in a statement. The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a penalty of up to RM500,000 in fines, two years' imprisonment, or both if convicted. MCMC also reminded the public to avoid sharing or spreading content that touches on sensitive issues related to religion, race, or royal institutions (3Rs). The commission emphasized that such material could divide society and disrupt national harmony. 'MCMC remains committed to ensuring the country's cyberspace remains safe, secure, and respected, in line with efforts to strengthen national unity and harmony among Malaysia's multiracial society,' the statement added. Earlier reports highlighted the historic promotion of Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng as the first Chinese senior officer to attain the rank of Lieutenant General in the MAF.

PAS distances itself from leader's racial remarks on landmark promotion of Chinese lieutenant-general
Takiyuddin said the post was the personal opinion of the individual involved and 'entirely contrary' to PAS' policies and values. — Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (June 26): PAS today said it does not support a social media post by one of its leaders that questioned the appointment of Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng as a Lieutenant General in the Malaysian Armed Forces. In a press statement, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the post was the personal opinion of the individual involved and 'entirely contrary' to PAS' policies and values. 'The appointment of Datuk Johnny Lim is a historic event that should be celebrated by all Malaysians, not questioned, much less belittled simply because of his ethnic background,' he said. Takiyuddin said PAS has long-standing commitment to Malaysia's multiracial society and warned members against making divisive remarks. 'Racism or racial prejudice in any form has no place in PAS,' he added. He also called on its members to adhere to its constitution and official decisions, stating that disciplinary action may be taken against those who violate its principles. Takiyuddin also highlighted that the party had recently amended its constitution to open membership for all Malaysians regardless of race or religion, which he said reflects its support for national unity. The post in question was made by Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad, who speculated that Malaysia's 50th prime minister in 2058 could be a Chinese individual, framing the scenario as a possible outcome of Johnny's promotion. The post has since been deleted. Zaharudin, who is the son-in-law of PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, came under fire from several quarters, including PKR youth chief Kamil Munim and DAP's Lim Guan Eng. Johnny's promotion marked a historic milestone, as he became the first Malaysian Chinese officer to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant-general in the armed forces. — Malay Mail Johnny Lim Eng Seng PAS Takiyuddin Hassan Zaharudin Muhammad

PPP Youth lashes out at criticism of first Malaysian Chinese lieutenant-general
KUALA LUMPUR: PPP Youth has criticised a politician whose now-deleted Facebook post had allegedly criticised the promotion of the nation's first three-star general of Chinese descent. In congratulating Lieutenant-General Johnny Lim Eng Seng, PPP Youth chief Sathiah Sudakaran said the promotion was a recognition of his outstanding service and contributions over 41 years. He said in the conext of Malaysia Madani and a progressive nation, race or religious background should never be the basis for appointments to key national positions. Sathiah said the wing took "serious exception" to the posting of Sungai Buloh Pas chief Zaharuddin Muhammad, for questioning the promotion. "Such a statement not only insults the individual appointed but also tarnishes the dignity of thousands of Malaysians who have contributed to the nation across various sectors, including in defence. "What is more concerning is that the remark indirectly undermines the trust placed by the Malaysian armed forces and questions the wisdom and authority of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the supreme commander of the armed forces, in making this appointment. "This is not only disrespectful, but can also be seen as incitement and an affront to one of the nation's highest institutions." Sathiah said the authorities must take firm action against remark. "Racial politics must never be used as a tool to sow hatred and division among Malaysians who live in a diverse and multicultural society." Sathiah's statement comes after Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar had also slammed criticism of Lim's promotion, though he did not mention anyone by name.
