Creative Approaches Like Poetry Recitals Can Boost ASEAN Unity - Ministry Sec-Gen

Barnama30-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- Creative approaches such as poetry recital programmes should be strengthened as part of efforts to further foster regional unity and cooperation, particularly among ASEAN countries, says Ministry of National Unity secretary-general Datuk Ruji Ubi.
He said that besides political and economic diplomacy, cultural and literary activities should also be emphasised to bring regional communities closer together.
'Creative approaches like tonight's poetry recitals should be further developed to attract greater participation from ASEAN countries, especially those who can recite poems and verses in the Malay language,' he told Bernama here tonight, after attending the poetry recital programme organised by the National Writers Association of Malaysia (PENA) in conjunction with Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL).

Immigration Dept Must Embrace AI To Raise Quality Of Delivery, Efficiency

PUTRAJAYA, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Immigration Department must embrace the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in services to raise the quality of delivery to the public and efficiency of department operations. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said AI integration in the department would indirectly boost productivity and revenue collection for the country. 'Previously, the Immigration Department didn't embrace but now it does so what's going to happen? Firstly, productivity will go up. Secondly, a faster delivery system and thirdly, if it relates to revenue collection, that will go up as well. This is the measure that we must look at when we talk about embracing AI,' he said during his speech when officiating the 103rd Immigration Day, with the theme 'AI leading Immigration Reforms', here today. He also suggested that the department send officers and personnel to follow special AI courses or programmes at local universities for a period of time. 'Give them leave for a week or two and introduce them to AI-related knowledge. Develop skills to use the rapidly-developing AI tools. For instance, most globally renowned companies using AI technology include Alibaba from China,' he said. Saifuddin said that the Immigration Department needed to implement people-centric approaches and improvements in its service in line with the intentions of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'Our approach must be people-centric, At the core, it's the people, that's why we need to have improvements to procedures and make things simpler. 'If we need to improvise the system, do it, because we will still remain as the forefront that provides services to the majority of the public,' he said. He also pointed out that the Immigration Department needed to reaffirm its commitment to integrity by implementing a zero-tolerance policy against any form of corruption or misconduct.

Contributions, Visits To Schools Must Follow MOE Guidelines — Fadhlina

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- All forms of contributions or external involvement, including by dignitaries and politicians, in institutions under the Ministry of Education (MOE) must comply with existing guidelines, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said today. She said all forms of contributions or public funding must be channelled in accordance with the provisions outlined in the MOE's Circular Letter No. 3 of 2018: Guidelines on Channelling and Receiving Contributions from the Private and Non-Private Sectors to Government Schools and Government-Aided Schools under the MOE, dated March 29, 2018. 'These contributions are also meant to ensure professional interaction within educational institutions and to prioritise the safety, well-being and welfare of the school community,' she said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat. She was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (PN-Tanah Merah) regarding the procedures for organisations, such as companies, foundations, or elected representatives, to make contributions to schools. Fadhlina said any visit or involvement by dignitaries and politicians is also subject to compliance with MOE's Circular Letter No. 4 of 2023: Guidelines on Invitations or Visits by Dignitaries and Politicians to Educational Institutions under the MOE, dated Feb 21, 2023. 'These two sets of guidelines are important to ensure that contributions and external involvement are conducted prudently, with a focus on educational benefits and in line with the principles of transparency and harmony within the school ecosystem,' she said. In response to a supplementary question from Datuk Lo Su Fui (GRS-Tawau) on the assurance that the MOE would review the syllabus to align with current market needs, Fadhlina said the ministry has a system to help students choose educational and career pathways that match their qualifications and interests. 'These students are guided by counsellors and teachers, and based on their academic results and co-curricular involvement, they are able to identify suitable courses to pursue, especially after SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia),' she said. Earlier, in response to Lo's original question, Fadhlina said the MOE is strengthening efforts to improve graduate employability through the Malaysia Education Development Plan (PPPM) 2026–2035, with a focus on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), and strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in line with current needs and global competition.

Kelantan Govt open To Talks With Police, Mac Over LGBT Programme

KOTA BHARU, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan government has expressed its willingness to meet with all relevant parties, including the police and the Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC), regarding the recent organisation of a programme related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities in Kota Bharu. Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said the meeting is to discuss and gain a clearer understanding of the event's organisation, so that the matter may be resolved diplomatically and dispel any unfounded allegations. 'Perhaps the mistake made was not the organiser's fault. That's why it needs to be investigated first, so that the police are not wrongfully blamed by the public. The police have their job, and on the other side, MAC also has its responsibilities. 'Any programme that goes against the state government's policies and the customs of the Kelantanese people is something we simply cannot accept,' he said during a press conference after the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session at the Kota Darulnaim Complex here today. He said that for programmes touching on sensitivities, especially when held within village communities, permission must first be obtained from the relevant authorities such as the Kelantan Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAHEIK), the police and others. Commenting further, Mohamed Fadzli said the state government could also take appropriate action if any event is found to have violated regulations set by the state government. In mid-June, Kelantan police raided an LGBT-related event involving more than 20 local men at a bungalow in Jalan Kemumin here. State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat was reported as saying that the operation was conducted based on public tip-offs and intelligence gathered by a special task force, following complaints about the event. A search of the premises uncovered hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication stored in a special room believed to be used as a storage place by the organisers.
