Fish Suffer Up to 22 Minutes of Intense Pain When Taken Out of Water
Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) hail originally from the Pacific Ocean's cold water tributaries, but are now a popular food fish worldwide, farmed in every continent except Antarctica.
Most of the time they are killed by asphyxiation, either in open air or ice water. While this is a cost-effective way to kill fish en-mass, an international team of biologists, led by Cynthia Schuck-Paim from the Welfare Footprint Institute, has found that each fish can experience up to 22 minutes of intense pain with this method.
Animal suffering is a difficult thing to quantify, but scientists have recently developed a standardized framework that factors in the intensity of negative states like stress or pain and the length of time they're experienced.
It's called the Welfare Footprint Framework, or WFF. The hope is that it will allow people who work with animals – biologists, veterinarians, zookeepers, farmers, etc – to compare and improve animal welfare standards.
"Societal concern about the impacts of production practices on animal welfare is rising, as evidenced by consumer-driven movements, labelling efforts, accreditation schemes, policies and legislation that prioritize animal welfare," the study's authors write.
"Our findings provide the first quantitative estimates of pain during fish slaughter, demonstrating the potential scale of welfare improvements achievable through effective stunning methods."
Sifting through stacks of published scientific papers, the team created a detailed picture of the experience of a fish out of water.
Just five seconds of air exposure triggers a neurochemical response we might associate with negative emotions in ourselves. Behaviors such as vigorous twisting and turning further demonstrate an intense aversion reaction.
Without water, the delicate gill structures that exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide stick together, causing CO2 from respiration to accumulate. These rising levels trigger nociception – the body's alarm system – which causes the fish to gasp. Eventually the elevated CO2 levels acidify the animal's blood and cerebrospinal fluid, ultimately resulting in unconsciousness.
Depending on the size of the fish, and the conditions in which it is slaughtered, these distressing experiences can last anywhere between 2 and 25 minutes.
"When standardized by production output, this corresponds to an average of 24 minutes per kilogram, with over one hour of moderate to extreme pain per kilogram in some cases," the authors note.
They estimate that electrical stunning, which has been proposed as a humane alternative for killing fish, could save up to 20 hours of moderate to extreme pain per US dollar of capital expenditure.
But brain scans have found the effectiveness of electrical stunning can vary widely: ideally, the animal should be rendered immediately and wholly unconscious until death. With current stunning methods, this isn't always the case.
"The welfare impact and effectiveness of any stunning method also depends critically on the entire harvest process, being affected by cumulative pre-slaughter stressors," Schuck-Paim and colleagues write.
"The WFF can also be used for assessing the welfare impacts of these processes and identifying priority areas for effective intervention."
While it's difficult for many of us to confront the cost of our human activities from an animal's perspective, this comparable measure of animal experience offers a clear picture of where improvements can be made for the welfare of our food stocks.
By quantifying the pain associated with this most common fish slaughter method, we may find better ways to care for the billions of animals that feed us each year.
The research is published in Scientific Reports.

Google Has Quietly Been Detecting Earthquakes by Sensing Rumbling in Android Phones For Years
Google has for years been harnessing the power of its Android smartphones to detect and measure tens of thousands of earthquakes. In a new paper published in the journal Science, researchers from the search giant described how they used motion sensors from its two billion-strong network of phones running Android between the years 2021 and 2024 to detect and alert quakes to users in almost 100 countries around the world. Known as "Android Earthquake Alerts" (AEA), this early warning system has uses the smartphones' accelerometers to detect telltale vibrations as they happen and inform residents of quakes in their areas. With its two-tiered severity levels — the weaker "be aware alert" for lower-magnitude quakes that sends typical push notifications, and the more pressing "take action alert" for moderate or extreme shakes that issues a loud beeping alarm that overrides "Do Not Disturb" settings — Google boasts that it has warned of more than 11,000 quakes. While such a system has invariably saved lives, however, AEA is far from flawless. In the case of Turkey's deadly quakes in 2023 that claimed more than 55,000 lives and injured over 100,000 people, the company now admits that it erroneously sent its lower-level notifications to hundreds of thousands of people — a massive failure during one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent history. Both in the Science paper and in a statement to BBC, Google admitted that it only sent 469 "Take Action" alerts during the first of the two earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria in February 2023, and instead mass-notified half a million people with the "Be Aware" version, the less severe of the two warnings. Because the first earthquake occurred at around 4:15 in the morning, that quieter warning likely went unseen by people who were asleep and had their phones silenced. That discrepancy appears to be the result of bad seismic readings from the phones' sensors. Initially, the system's algorithms estimated that the first quake was between a 4.5 and 4.9 on the moment magnitude scale (MMS), but it was actually a far more serious 7.8. During the second quake, the AEA also underestimated the magnitude, sending only 8,158 "Take Action" alarms and almost four million "Be Aware" alerts. (That shoddy algorithm, the company says, has since been updated.) Until now, Google deflected blame for the system's failure, even after the BBC investigated the AEA in the aftermath of the quakes and found it to be severely lacking. Though this sort of admission is better late than never, it's still concerning that Google took more than two years to admit the system's failures during the Turkey earthquakes. With so many people relying on the tech monolith for life-saving alerts, taking accountability for the AEA's failures is paramount — and that accountability should have been much swifter. Additionally, Ax-4 commander and NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson extended her record of cumulative days spent by an American in space to 695. At the ISS, the astronauts spent two weeks running various scientific studies in the microgravity atmosphere. However, their stay was extended by four days to achieve favorable orbital phasing for their return. They flew back to Earth on the SpaceX Dragon capsule before safely landing in the Pacific ocean. What Near-Death Experiences Teach Us About Work, New Studies Say
Near-death experiences at work are uncommon in many professions, but with close calls in aviation gaining more attention in recent months, certain industries are grappling with the impact these experiences have in the workplace and ways such events influence how survivors move forward in their careers. Recent studies reveal that employee' near-death experiences dramatically change their thoughts about work, what matters most in their careers and their relationships with coworkers. What Are Near-Death Experiences? A near-death experience (NDE) is an event when someone has a close brush with death and temporarily begins the process of dying. After recovery, survivors typically recount an out-of-body experience or a vision of a tunnel of light. NDEs occur among 17% of people who nearly die. And about 45% of people who report near-death experiences describe accompanying out-of-body experiences. A whopping five to 10% of the general population have memories of an NDE, including somewhere between 10 and 23% of cardiac arrest survivors. Many people who have had near-death experiences describe a sense of "awe" or "bliss" and a reluctance to come back into their bodies after being revived. They recall seeing and often hearing ongoing earthly events from a perspective that is apart, and usually above, their physical bodies. Following cardiac arrest, they may see, and later accurately describe, their own resuscitation. In the last hours before an expected natural death, many people enter a period of unresponsiveness, during which they no longer respond to their external environment. Anecdotal reports from near-death experiences commonly include stories of the dying person hearing unusual noises or hearing themselves pronounced dead. Scientific Research On Near-Death Experiences No one knows for sure what happens as we die, but recent information from researchers gives us a clue. In 2020, I wrote a story for on brain scientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, who witnessed her own stroke, describing it as strikingly similar to the bliss of an NDE which she details in her book, My Stroke of Insight. Taylor told me there was zero fear, and she was bouncing in and out of blissful euphoria and awareness of external reality. She remembers shifting into a consciousness that she's a part of a greater humanity, more open, expansive and flexible to possibilities—as opposed to self-focused needs. 'The authentic self is the part of us that I firmly believe shows up in the last five minutes of our lives,' she states. 'When we're on our deathbed, the left brain begins to dissipate. We shift out of all the accumulation and the external world because it's no longer valuable. What is valuable is who we are as human beings and what we did with our lives to help others.' Neuroscientists accept NDEs as a unique mental state that offers insights into the death experience. A recent burst in research suggests that survivors of near-death experiences feel increased empathy, spiritual growth, a sense of purpose and even change how they approach their jobs. A groundbreaking study in Scientific Reports, validates anecdotal records with the first empirical evidence that people still hear while in an unresponsive state hours before dying. The researchers found that the auditory systems of dying patients respond similarly to young, healthy participants just hours from the end of life. They conclude that hearing is the last sense to go in the dying brain. A study in the June, 2025 issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology explores stories from military aviators who had a close brush with death on the job and what helped them process the traumatic experiences and rediscover meaning in their work. I spoke with the study's coauthor, Kevin Rockmann, professor of management at George Mason University's Costello College of Business. He told me that participants used storytelling about their close brush with death as a means to reclaim a sense of purpose, identity and belonging in their jobs. He adds that storytelling after a life-threatening event also applies to corporate employees readjusting to life after facing a traumatic or serious medical event like the recent Manhattan mass shooting at New York's NFL headquarters, major surgery or auto accident. 'The way stories are told (with humor, exaggeration or vulnerability) shapes emotional healing and workplace esteem,' Rockmann says. 'Even deeply traumatic experiences can strengthen an employee's connection to their role, especially in high-stakes jobs like aviation, healthcare or emergency response.' Journal of Management research, published in July of this year explores how NDEs affect employees' return to their jobs. The most common change is the desire to do more meaningful work. The study found that NDEs reshape values, creating a deeper appreciation of life, less value on money, material possessions and prestige and more importance on meaning, purpose and loving others. Survivors often change the direction of their careers, focus on different work priorities, switch jobs or start their own companies. The researchers also reported that NDEs transform how survivors interact with and relate to others at work, making them more than just business associates, creating deeper relationships, connecting to them as human beings. 'The stories of near-death survivors offer a kind of blueprint for re-imagining how we work," the researchers conclude. "For employees, that might mean re-evaluating what success looks like or exploring roles that align more closely with personal values. For employers, it might involve fostering workplace cultures that prioritize connection, purpose and well-being.' When Coworkers Have Near-Death Experiences According to Rockmann, the natural tendency is to suppress near-death stories so as not to disturb hearers and make the affected person 'relive' the experience. But he believes this overlooks the value to be gained by encouraging that person to share their story with others in the workplace. Unspoken workplace rules cause miscommunication and disconnection. If you're an employer, experts recommend that you ensure HR personnel are well educated about the process of death and dying. If you're an employee where deaths or near-deaths haven't been acknowledged, speak to someone in authority who can take steps to provide training. Appropriate information makes sure employees receive emotional support during the loss. Otherwise social isolation can cut employees off from help when they most need it. Karen Salmansohn told me she encourages employees to use mortality as motivation not to fear death, but to use its reality to prioritize meaning, connection and courage. Author of Your To-Die-For Life: How to Maximize Joy and Minimize Regret . . . Before Your Time Runs Out, Salmansohn is a proponent of what she calls, 'near-life experiences.' She describes these moments as times when you're technically alive. 'Your heart is beating, your lungs are working, but you're not really living. You're present in body, but not in spirit. You're on autopilot. Distracted. Scattered. Going through the motions but missing the meaning.' Neuroscientists suggest that knowing what happens when we're dying tells us how to console colleagues and loved ones as they pass on. It's important to be supportive, compassionate and understanding in cases where coworkers have near-death experiences. Experts encourage you to reach out to bereaved colleagues, share your concerns and be willing to listen. Knowing that hearing is the last sense to go gives credence to being present with comforting words in the last hours to console your dying colleagues and loved ones.
